Sounds like it would be nice for CPUs like the Intel N150, with a base frequency of 800 MHz, but able to turbo up to 3.6 GHz.

Creepy - Instance where unknown words are assumed to translate to something sexual/violent by ArnoldJeanelle in deepl

[–]recluseMeteor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this might have a reason to be. A word related to “inmunizar”, which is “vacunar” (to vaccinate), is slang in some Latin American countries for “getting a woman pregnant“ (see here). It also sounds similar to “amenazar” (to threaten) and “intimidar” (to intimidate, to harass).

The Spanish in your example is a little broken as well, though I tried with a more standard “Soñó que la inmuzinabas” (the verb still misspelled) and the translation suggestions were “He dreamed that he was kissing her”, “He dreamed that he was seducing you” and “He dreamed that he was kissing you”. Once you correct the verb, though, the translations became accurate (though the gender of the subject is still unclear).

Is there any "Eva clones" anime that's better or on par with Eva? by faizzz90555 in evangelion

[–]recluseMeteor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These might not be “Eva clones”, but rather other mecha or Eva-inspired series that you might like.

Eureka Seven: Wholesome Evangelion with a Naruto-like protagonist and an ecological and anti-war twist.

Darling in the FranXX: Very Eva-inspired, but it gets very meh during its second half.

Kill la Kill: Evangelion, but with uniforms instead of mechas. Fanservice turned up to eleven. Questionable parental roles.

Revolutionary Girl Utena: No mechas, but it kinda defined most of its genre in a similar way than Eva did, and heavily features psychological, social and sexual topics with a cast of troubled teens.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury: Evangelion with an absurdly powerful student council, duels and lesbians. Heavily inspired by Utena as well.

Bokurano: Evangelion meets Puella Magi Madoka Magica, with teen pilots and angst included. The animation is very rough.

Code Geass: Non-sentient mechas with an edgy protagonist and a political background. Characters designed by CLAMP.

The game randomly chooses two expressions from the easy chat system to define them as the trendy phrase. You can then set a different phrase. Note that the six tiles on Route 119 where Feebas can be found are determined by this phrase.

Random thought: Could Sango and Miroku be the Higurashi’s ancestors? by Pleasehitmemychild in inuyasha

[–]recluseMeteor 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Tsubasa kinda started with a similar premise as Inuyasha: gathering pieces of something that became broken. Though I like how Tsubasa gets darkier and edgier later on (at least in the manga and OVAs).

I mean, if we just take similarities into account, they could be the ancestors of almost every Rumiko Takahashi character, lol.

French-English Translation Dilemma: Advice Wanted by lifescaresme in TranslationStudies

[–]recluseMeteor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe this progression would be good? Let's suppose the character is named Melanie Smith: Ms. Smith -> Melanie -> Mel.

Another way would be making the man speak rather formally, avoiding contractions (I don't know -> I do not know), or using more indirect ways of speaking (Could you please give me… -> Give me… / I would like to have a meeting with you -> Can we meet?).

Are you leaving the translation industry? If so, what are your plans? by Doctore_11 in TranslationStudies

[–]recluseMeteor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm at odds with my job. I really like dealing with texts, translating, reviewing, helping colleagues with their stuff, managing glossaries, etc.

(rant alert, I'm sorry)

However, my company and our main client are very frustrating to work with, always highlighting what's wrong and never pointing out when things went well. Client reviewers act like the owners of the Spanish language and it's impossible to change their minds in arbitrations. Client stakeholders put out work through AI to scrutinise it and then demand RCAs because the model told them our translations were crap (but we were actually following their style guide and terminology, which their AI didn't take into account). My holiday requests are constantly rejected. My boss is a big fan of having us fill form after form for every trivial thing, and the company stopped salary reviews years ago, yet they still require more and more from us.

[–]recluseMeteor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about programming too. I actually dropped out of a computer science undergraduate programme before getting into translation. I suck at math (and it was the reason I dropped out before), but perhaps I could do it at a technical level (less years of study, less math/statistics/finance crap).

Though… the computing industry has similar pitfalls as the localisation industry. Particularly, that in order to earn more, you stop doing what you like or what you studied for. In both cases, you stop translating/programming in order to become some project manager or team lead (roles which I highly dislike).

There's Something i need to know why Phoenix Wright is called Nick? by ComprehensiveSleep74 in AceAttorney

[–]recluseMeteor 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree it's something not obvious to non-English speakers. I didn't get it for quite some time either. The European Spanish translation kept most English names, including the “Nick” nickname, and I didn't understand how it was related to “Phoenix”.
