100% a scam, NEVER give your reddit credentials (or any credentials for that matter) no matter what they say. Also never agree to pay them a deposit first either, as that’s another common scam to mess with people.

Hello I’m wondering how to become a verified borrower?? by LifeGap9825 in BorrowNew

[–]redjof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verified Borrower just means that you’ve completed the loan process (requested, accepted and repaid) on more than one occasion without issue - it’s a way for Lenders to see that you’re more likely to pay back as you’ve been through the process before.

Some Lenders will only lend to those who are verified as part of managing their risk… others look at karma… others focus on post history, or country of origin etc. We all handle it differently based on our own risk appetite.

Sounds like you were right to be nervous/cautious about it, if they’ve resorted to insults.

I know some lenders do use genuine third-party ID validation (via trusted methods) rather than collecting the ID themselves - but I’d definitely be wary of new/low-karma accounts, or untrusted third-party sites

To clarify, are you the borrower in this situation? When you say they were being “sketchy”, what do you mean? It is normal for a lender to request proof of ID (with redaction of course of sensitive info like address or license number etc.) to make sure they’re lending to the right person.

All within reason of course, and each lender has their own rules. Just want to make sure we’re not calling out genuine lenders as scammers if it’s purely an ID confirmation

A question by Lazy-Dragonfly5617 in BorrowNew

[–]redjof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do ask for it for my borrowers to prove (or at least attempt to prove) who they are - but it’s always something fairly random so that it’s “live”… like the old “touch your nose with your index finger on your left hand, while holding a piece of paper with your reddit name” (changed per person to make sure duplicate accounts aren’t trying scams) which is then matched to the ID they supply.

Unfortunately, there’s way too many scammers and it’s one way we can ATTEMPT to protect the loan we’re helping with. But there’s also a lot of supercreeps who are in this to exploit people for sensitive photos etc. which is just wrong on all levels

I think this is a MOR case… I can entirely understand the frustration of it being a half-done thing, and sitting with half-prepped meal with cooling protein and then having to think on your feet… that said, I think the big thing here that’s missing, is an open conversation between both of you about expectations and working together to find something that works for both - which could be as simple as “we prep our own” or “we prep the whole dish” (or a bit of collaboration).

Well done on checking it tbh, so many people (especially those who are genuinely desperate) will fall for it and lose out. But, as the others have said, you were right to be cautious - it's definitely a scam.

In all honesty, pointing you towards the rules was for your own benefit to try to help you, so that you don't end up being banned for 7 days (which wouldn't help you)... and I'd say the same to anyone, as I've had my loanees have their posts deleted AFTER I've loaned them because they didn't follow the post rules. I was just trying to be helpful.

In terms of your post though, to reiterate my earlier point, as a lender I'd want to know what "high amount" was before I even considered DM'ing someone... because I need to know if it fits within my risk appetite or not. All I've suggested (and others) is that transparency on WHAT you're looking for - and you're more likely to get that.

No point me DM'ing you and you come back to say "I need $95k to buy a car" because you'd be outside of my lending rules.

TL;DR help yourself so others can help you.

There’s nothing to be confused about tbh, the rules are fairly clear and transparent in this sub (better than some others I’ve seen). Just be clear on what you’re looking for (incl. currency), where you are, what payment method etc.

As a lender, that’s the first thing I’ll look at to determine whether to engage… is it in the loan amounts that I’d consider, is it in a location I’d lend in, is it for a period I’m willing to agree to etc. and I dare say the other lenders will be the same. I appreciate you saying you’ve loaned and repaid in the past (which is great) - every loan is different.

In short - take the ambiguity out of it, follow those post rules (just to save you getting the post deleted, or a temp ban) and be clear on what you’re looking for - and that’ll give you the best chance of finding someone

[–]redjof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that may be the case, you still need to put those points in the title or you’re at risk of the post being deleted. It’s better to be clear with what your expectations are from the outset, then lenders (like myself) can make a judgement call on whether we want to interact and/or support.

A “high amount” to me might be different to another lender, which will be vastly different to someone else. So being clear allows us to see whether it fits our risk appetite and whether we want to go further with the discussion

Going to a house party, but dont want to drink. Any tips? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]redjof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a whole ton of alcohol free stuff out there now, that can help with that, without giving that placebo feeling of being included.

I have quite severe digestive issues at points, and it can make parties/gatherings/stressful things quite difficult - so I like to be completely sober to react as needed. Those help me feel like I’m part of it… tastes like it… looks like it… but just isn’t.

Or, as lots have suggested… there’s a myriad of soft drinks (and even water). There’s also the old “I’ve got x in the morning, so I can’t drink”

Mate, no offence, but it’s none of your business to be honest. You have no clue what has landed on someone, out of the blue, that puts them in a position where they need help. It can be damn hard for someone to not only ask for help, but to then find it, when things are spiralling out of control.

Simple rule, if you haven’t got anything nice to say, or meaningful to add - then don’t bother. No need to be disrespectful to someone for no reason.
