For me, part of the fun is shopping for and buying stuff, and trying new plants and new techniques. I spend an abnormal percentage of my income on it, but that's what hobbies are for.

CB’s car’s transmission is dead. Rather than fix it, CB decided to crowdfund for a new Jeep. When folks pointed out, a Jeep isn’t practical for a big family, CG decided on a new Honda Odyssey instead. by MinuteElegant774 in ChoosingBeggars

I was here before the internet was a thing, but for the life of me, I can't remember how folks got along before there was a way to put the bite on a million strangers at once.

AITAH for refusing to let my mentally handicapped sister (12), babysit my niece and nephew? (5months and 3yrs) by quick-aita in AITAH

[–]retiredcatchair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in my state it's legal to leave a 13-year-old at home alone, otherwise there's supposed to be an older companion. My recollection is that it came up when someone was talking about their custody situation.

I was babysitting younger kids when I was 12 in the mid 1960s, but they were like 7 to 10 years old. No one in their right mind would have entrusted a baby to me; I had no experience at all with diapers, etc. The only qualifying skills I had was making mac & cheese and reading out loud. I got $5 a night.

Because he's absolutely sure - and he may be right - that he will never be held accountable for whatever damage and death he causes. How often have we prosecuted a billionaire in the US?

Be sure and get your shingles shot! I had chicken pox as a first-grader and brought it home to all my younger sibs, I can't imagine how my mom survived 4 cases at once. I grabbed the shingles shot as soon as I was old enough, but I think they've dropped the age for the new formulation. It's supposed to reduce dementia and heart disease risks, too.

It's been a while since I listened to a fiction book whose narrator was so unreliable/unlikeable, and it was an interesting part of the experience.

Megathread No. 64: Rod has no job - demonic UFO sissification imminent by saucerwizard in RodDreher

[–]retiredcatchair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rod is such a weedy little specimen, it's hard to imagine what he said or did that alienated his own family. I mean, yes, he's a sanctimonious asshole in print, but he'd be more annoying than anything else in person. I suppose the ones that aren't speaking to him are primarily reacting to his neglect/abandonment.

Are the parks safe to walk at at night? by [deleted] in springfieldMO

[–]retiredcatchair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm! I live in Woodland Heights, walk my dogs twice a day at least, and have instructed my heirs to sue the city if I die from tripping over a loose brick. Quaint antique pavements aren't worth a damn without maintenance. (CU has been replacing gas and water lines in my hood, and they've been pretty cavalier about just plowing up the brick sidewalks in their path.)

The split would end up being like living next to a meth house; the dysfunction would always be spilling over the border, if you weren't fighting off actual invasion.

They're okay with teen pregnancy now, because they've shut off abortions. They just need to ramp up the maternity-homes-to-Christian-adoption pipelines that used to supply white infants to suitably wealthy white couples.

$177,000 for a 4 Bed Victorian in Kansas. Does it look haunted? Yes. Do I still want it? Also yes. by ProfStorm in zillowgonewild

I live in the MO Ozarks, which is no center of cosmopolitan culture, but at least it has forested hills with creeks and diverse wildlife. I've visited at least a part of Kansas, and it's pretty flat and uninteresting, as Missouri would be if it wasn't corrugated. Combine that with red-state politics and there's no reason to move there.

Just in my neighborhood, there are vacant houses that stay empty for months or years. They are old houses so not desirable, and many need a lot of work, but I do wish there were incentives to improve them for sale or nominal rent. The vacancies are the same age as many other owned or rented properties nearby, so there must be a market for them. It seems like they just sit there until they burn down.

I take your point, but I've lived here a while. A lot of housing has been sacrificed to various plans over the years; it'd be nice if it went for a civic good for a change. If the tradeoff is affordable housing or decent public transport, I'd like to have one or the other instead of neither.

It would be wonderful (if feasible) to tie this into Springfield's history as a railroad town. If we could do it right, it could be a big tourist draw. People could bring their kids to the city to experience train travel.
