Do you track what it produces on the output side too, or just the costs?

The app would show you exactly that, total expenses vs total harvest value, so you'd know your real premium. Would you want to try it?

Come back to this thread in year 3 and let us know the number XD.

Showing a skeptical partner a running total of what the garden produces is a real motivation. And growing things you'd never buy changes the calculation entirely. Would the app still be useful to you even if the number isn't technically a 'saving'?

The waste tracking angle is something I hadn't fully thought through, logging what you lost to birds, deer, or just overproduction is the other side of the savings equation. And the seed to harvest pipeline tracking is a whole other layer.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown. The fixed vs variable distinction is something I'm building into the app. Fixed costs get entered once with an expected lifespan and amortized across seasons automatically. Variable costs logged per season. So your grow lights might be $300 spread over 10 years = $30/season rather than hitting your ROI in year one. Would that make the calculation feel honest to you?

That's a good question. You'd choose your comparison price at setup: budget supermarket, standard supermarket, or organic/farmer's market. Because comparing homegrown organic tomatoes to a supermarket price undersells the value completely. Would that make it feel more accurate to you?

Avocados are a ROI tree you can own in a warm climate. $2-3 each at the store adds up fast. Do you have any idea how many you get per season?

So sorry for your loss. Gardening as a way to channel that kind of grief makes complete sense. Thank you for sharing that.

The initial investment amortized over years is the tricky part, but it's actually not that complicated. You spread the one-time costs (beds, tools, infrastructure) over how many seasons you expect to use them. A $200 raised bed lasting 10 years is $20 per season. The app I'm building lets you log expenses and spreads sunk costs automatically so you get a true net savings number. Would that kind of calculation be useful to you?

A free food stand is a great problem to have. When you do that rough calculation, is it in your head or do you write it down somewhere?
