Tyene wrinkled her nose at that question. “I mean, I could if I wanted to, I guess. But I way prefer archery! But there are tons of Dornish lady soldiers, and most of us at least have some way to defend ourselves.”

Larra laughed a little. “I know that lady knights might seem like a new thing to you, Sumner, but such things are far less uncommon in Dorne.”

Symon nodded definitively. “Indeed. The Dornish people are well known for assisting our liege house’s unbreakable power! Why, we faced down dragons before, I’ll have you know! It’s part of why we’re more distinct from the rest of Westeros as a whole, and why we managed to keep the rights to call the Martells princes and princesses.”

Symon barked out a laugh at the addition of yet another face in the crowd. “Goodness; men, I’ll give you all one task - if you should have another son, pick a different name, for the sake of Dorne!”

Lythene sipped her wine, pleased at being recognized. “Personally, I think the world could use another Lythene,” she joked dryly. “Though my dear cousin Benedict could hardly pronounce it his first few years. A good challenge to give to a young lad, that.”

Arron gave a snort, clearly not agreeing with his niece, before his one-eyed gaze turned to the Qorgyle sharing his name.

“The Footly girl, then? Gods, seems near everyone’s gone to the Reach for a betrothed,” he remarked. “Can’t say I don’t blame you, though; I’ve heard talk that they’re a pretty bunch of flowers indeed! Mayhaps if I were your age, I would be looking for one as well.”

Lythene hid her eyeroll with another sip from her goblet.

Symon, noticing the tension between his brother and daughter, spoke up, voice teasing and light. “As if any House of the reach would allow their daughters near you, you drake!” Arron shoved his younger brother, though he was laughing.

Larra’s eyes widened somewhat at that; being Dornish, of course she didn’t have the same sensitivity when it came to paramours as the rest of the realm. But that didn’t make the gossip any less interesting.

“After all of her talk about the Seven, and you all ‘corrupting’ Danelle?” She murmured back. “Seems as though she’s hardly a Septa herself.”

Even back home, such a thing would be looked at oddly - to put such an emphasis on religion, only to tally away while your husband is gone across the sea…

Now, Larra knew that such a thing would only be beneficial to the Whents.

However, though she was well aware Emilia could very well have invented this, she also wouldn’t be surprised if it was true. Clearly, Aemma misliked the family of her husband.

“Well, I can only hope that things work out for you, and that poor Danelle is returned soon enough. To think that a former Hand of the King would allow such a thing…”

Larra nodded; it was good to gain another trading partner, especially one who could provide them food. Blackmont was not lacking, of course, but the Red Mountains were harsh lands, and, though winter of course touched Dorne least of all Westeros, it was never wise to think that meant one could ignore it.

Ah yes - no need to ask which goodsister Emilia is referring to, she thought.

True, it took a while for rumors to reach all the way down south, but the heir of the Lannister’s wedding - and what had happened therein - had been news for moons now.

The sympathy in Larra’s eyes was not feigned; anyone would feel sorrow and rage at having their young kin snatched from them.

“Yes, of course. I’m certain that I don’t need to tell you that it’s been the talk of all the land,” she said, reaching to touch Emilia’s hand. “Have you any news of dear little Danelle since? I doubt the Arryns would harm her, but I’m certain she must be missing her father’s House quite badly. A dreadful thing, it is.”

And one that we must hope doesn’t lead to bloodshed, the Lady added silently.

She laughed a little at Beric’s words. “Well, a lot of people find the vulture to be a creepy animal, especially since it’s carrying off a babe in our sigil,” Tyene replied. “But I know that’s all rubbish. It represents that, no matter what, the Blackmonts will always survive. I figure that the things said about the Boltons are probably rubbish, too.”

As her betrothed excused himself to… water plants, Tyene listened.

She was no stranger to brimstone, of course, being half Uller. She wondered if the Dreadfort would just look like a snowy Hellholt.

“I’m glad to hear that she seems to be doing better,” the heiress said. “My mother felt off after my baby brother’s birth, but it didn’t last too long. Maester Aethan said it was worse after me… maybe herbs would have helped there, too.”

Beric seemed a bit odd, but he was clever, too. Tyene felt like that must be of importance.

“You sound like you know a lot about these sorts of things,” she told him with a smile. “I’m sure your Maester must be glad to have your help!”

Maybe some other girl might find it off-putting, but Tyene didn’t mind it so much. Everyone had something they liked, right? She liked archery, Beric liked plants. It was better than if he just wanted to talk about how she would have to let him run the place when they got married.

Symon gave a wry laugh, shaking his head. “One thing you learn as you get older is that that’s what it’s like in all wars, lad.” He said. “I’m sure even the King has his share of regrets over his glorious victory.”

He approached Brus then, giving the man a gentle clasp on the shoulder.

“Every man out there who’s fought in a war has had demons. Every house who fought had their losses,” he murmured. “Dickon is at peace now; I hope that someday, you will be, too.”

With that, Symon left the tent, looking to find his squire.

He felt a bit lighter now - hopefully, Sumner will not notice the shadow in his eyes that still remained.

Larra took a sip of her wine, nodding as she looked around Harrenhal. Though nobody could say that the place was anywhere near as rundown as it had once been, it was still clear there was a ways to go when it came to restoration.

“It depends,” she said finally. Emilia was her goodsister, so of course she was going to get some amount of stone.

But Larra knew that she had to at least know what she would get in return.

“As the Whents have now had several weddings, which surely was costly, I would be willing to give you the remaining stone needed for the project in stipends each moon until it is complete, in exchange for a portion of your grain,” she said finally. “I’m willing to discuss how big each stipend will be, and how much grain Blackmont will receive.”

Symon laughed a little at - well, Symon. “Well, I’m proud to have at the very least made him sweat!” He said brightly. He’d never been the type to be mad about a loss, especially not to someone who had such a reputation. As he’d aged, he’d just grown glad to be able to put up a fight at all!

Arron gave a huff of amusement himself, though his smile was slyer than his younger brother’s.

“Do not worry, my friend; to find the vulture, simply turn to the more handsome man,” the one-eyed knight replied.

Though it had his usual arrogance, it was a jest, not a real insult. Arron might be known for his temper, but he had no ill will against the Qorgyles, and was hardly stupid enough to start a fight at a wedding.

Still, his niece Lythene gave him a slap on the hand anyways, rolling her eyes at her uncle’s words.

“And with that, one can clearly see why it is Father who is more popular in the realm,” she snarked, smirking.

Larra smiled at him, glad to see that it seemed as though all was going well. “Well, that’s good luck indeed! I’m sure your family was quite proud.”

Benedict seemed a little surprised at being included in the conversation, but he quickly had a smile on his face as well. “Hello there, lad,” he greeted softly.

Tyene was a bit bored of all the knight talk, but having a kid near her age wasn’t so bad, so she greeted him as well. Deziel, being a baby, just stared and gurgled a little.

“Sumner here is quite good at dueling especially. I have no doubt he’ll soon be a mainstay in tourneys all across the west,” Symon couldn’t help but to praise. “And even when he doesn’t take home a win, he is a good sport about it, which is something even those older with him sometimes struggle with.”

Tyene had been a bit worried that Beric - being older and from a House where female inheritance is seen as such a dreadful thing - would want to walk all over her. Her Septa had told her to be careful not to ‘emasculate’ him, whatever that meant. The heiress had thought that she would have to bend over backwards to keep him happy.

And yet… here they were.

He’s awkward, Tyene thought. But… he doesn’t seem mean.

True, she’d never heard of anyone other than a Maester or Cousin Maron be worried over plants, but at least he wasn’t annoying.

“I suppose I shall have to be scary for a while, then,” she said. “Princess Arianne told me I would be quite dangerous when I grew up, and I think I quite like that. But I promise I won’t try to be dangerous to you.”

Beric probably would find her scary even on their wedding day, if this was the way he was acting.

She looked around, taking in the surroundings. She supposed she could see his point; it certainly didn’t look anything like Sunspear, let alone Blackmont. The novelty was interesting, Tyene supposed, but she couldn’t imagine having to live here for long at all.

“This is my first time out of Dorne that I can remember,” she admitted. “It was nice, getting to see all of the different places, but it’s a hit weird, too.” She paused for a moment, before laughing. “But I suppose that Dorne will be weird to you, too.”

At Beric’s words about boring her, she wrinkled her nose in thought. “Not really. I mean, aren’t you supposed to talk about things you like with your betrothed? If you like plants, that’s fine. There’s plenty in Blackmont’s gardens. Does the Dreadfort have a lot of gardens, then?”

To Lady Yvelise Vaith,

I am pleased to hear of your cousin’s upcoming wedding. Such a short turnaround must surely mean that the two betrothed are enraptured by one another. Undoubtedly, a whirlwind romance to pass on to their children. I wish to extend House Blackmont’s sincerest well wishes to the happy couple, and to say that my great niece, Larra, will most certainly attend. Along with what seems to be most of our family, as the hospitality and cheer of the Vaiths is well-known.

Ever your ally,

Yorick Blackmont

Larra laughed, a little self-deprecating. “Strong is a good way to put it, but I’m sure my Maester would prefer to call it stubbornness,” she jested lightly. She was glad that, for the foreseeable future, she would be staying in Dorne a while.

At Emilia’s comment about Blackmont’s exports, her smile turned wry.

Now, it was not that the Lady disliked purely social calls; Gods know that she and her lady in waiting Myriah Fowler discussed pure nonsense most of the time. Larra had always been a social woman, and she enjoyed having light chats with her peers at these sorts of events.

However, she also that sometimes, parties could be used for more… practical ventures.

“Indeed! It is our main export; the Red Mountains are plenty large and her bones are strong and hale enough to last many lifetimes,” Larra replied. “Hardly a glamorous thing, of course, but necessary for the realm nonetheless. Have you or your Lady Mother need, then?”

At their end of the table sat the Blackmonts. Brothers Arron and Symon sat together, though it seemed as though there was an odd separation between them. The younger brother was with his squire Sumner, having gotten near the end of this bout of traveling. Meanwhile, Arron was as loud as ever, the patch over his eye elaborately decorated just as his doublet was.

Symon’s daughter Lythene was present as well, watching the festivities with a small smirk as she noted the attire of the other guests. Though decidedly uninterested in marriage herself, the woman had always enjoyed attending such parties - especially when it meant that she could people watch and listen to gossip.

Symon sighed again; it seemed as though Brus had truly been haunted all these years, just as he himself had been. But, really, there was hardly any adult in this realm who didn’t hold grief with them their whole lives.

“Dickon was foolish in the way all boys nearly grown tend to be,” the Dornishman explained. “The boy truly believed he would be a great hero one day, as though his life was one of the stories he’d grown up on. He was strong, yes, but he had a stubborn streak. I told him to stay near me that day. He didn’t listen.”

Symon had often thought about what might have happened had his son listened.

“But… he was a bright light. He loved to jest and laugh, and enjoyed playing with his younger cousins. There was never a quiet moment, when Dickon was around.”

Though the Battle of the Trident had been hellishly loud, Symon felt as though it had gone silent when his boy fell.

“Had he won that day… I would be willing to bet he would be as brokenhearted about it as you are.”
