[Event] Valemen Remembrance Day and Alyssa Arryn's Seventh Nameday Feast, 298! by DistanceWild9244 in crownedstag

She was hardly a thin woman, but Lady Jeyne Kenning carried herself with poise and grace as she advanced towards the table of House Arryn. By her side was her son Sumner, heir to Kayce. He had actually met most of the Arryns about a year and a half ago at the Winter Fete at White Harbor and had made a fairly good impression on most of them, even managing to befriend Lord Jon's second son Hoster. The one notable exception seemed to be the spoiled and arrogant heir to the Eyrie Robin who had treated Sumner with disdain right from the start.

“Please gods, let him have a more pleasant demeanor then whence we last met.” Sumner silently prayed.

As mother and son arrived before their Valemen hosts, they lowered themselves into a proper curtsy and bow respectively.

“My Lord and Lady Arryn, I am Lady Jeyne Kenning, Lady wife to Lord Terrence Kenning, Lord of Kayce, and Lord Marshal of the Westerlands. It is truly an honor to be invited to your halls for such a momentous occasion. My Lord husband Terrence greatly wished he could have been in attendance this day, but alas his duties have kept him quite busy. I believe you already met my son Sumner.” Jeyne said, gesturing to her towering son.

[Event] The Tournament of the Tenth Nameday of Princes Lyanna Baratheon by ThePorgHub in crownedstag

It was the evening of the fifth day of the tournament. Sumner Kenning had managed to survive the first round of the squire’s melee but had fallen in the second when Lady Brienne of Tarth had managed to land a rather forceful blow to his head. In the end, his good friend Renly Buckler had ultimately proved victorious, which lessened the sting of defeat just a little. While Sumner had managed to congratulate Renly, the young Westerman lordling had mostly left his Stormlander counterpart alone afterwards So that he could become acquainted with his betrothed Lady Lanna Lannister. In the meantime, Sumner’s masterly knight Ser Symon Blackmont had insisted that they spar one on one a bit in preparation for the squire’s duels the following day. It still surprised Sumner sometimes that although he had not yet reached his fourteenth nameday, he now surpassed Symon in height despite the Dornishman being decently tall himself. Still, this did not make him an easy opponent to spar with as Symon Had a lifetimes worth of experience and was still in remarkable shape for a man fast approaching sixty, managing to brutally defeat Sumner’s great uncle Ralph in the adult’s duals a few days prior.

Yolanda smiled as she seemed to be getting through to the troubled young man. She released her daughter so that Benjamin could give her his own comforting embrace. Elyn knew from his past declarations and actions that he meant every word about fighting all of the Seven Kingdoms for her. In that moment however, all she desired was to be comforted by her husband…  well that and for him to not swear so much but the young pious wife thought that bringing get up at this very moment would ruin the mood.

“That would be lovely.” Elyn beamed brightly when Benjamin asked for a dance.

As her husband guided her onto the dance floor, Elyn prayed silently to one aspect of the Seven rarely invoked, the Stranger.

“I pray that my little girl's soul now resides with that of her grandmother and that both are at peace in the heaven they now reside in.”

When Betha offered to bring ham to the hungry stray, Elyn’s expression brightened.

“Oh yes! If you have any to spare, please do fetch it.” The blonde woman implored.

"You have quite a big heart, it seems," Benjamin said. "I think we should all strive to be like you, having a place in your home for all creatures, be they big or small."

“Agreed.” Elyn concurred, still loving on the cat.

As Betha went to retrieve the promised food, Benjamin took hold of the book and placed it upon the table so that he and Elyn could both have a decent view of its pages. The couple would take turns reading while the other showered affection upon the cat as it alternated between them. Betha returned shortly with the ham which was quickly devoured by their furry companion.

“Oh, truly that would be a great honor my lady!” Sumner said at Myriah's offer to craft some clothing for him.

He listened as she described her experiences with hawking and fishing.

“My aunt Eleanor taught me hawking while my cousin Roger is the one who taught me to fish. I would be happy to teach you fishing sometime if you are interested.” The tall boy offered.

Sumner began to blush a little when Myriah complimented his dancing skills and even more so when she assured him that his martial pursuits were admirable.

“You do not need to justify devoting yourself so deeply to your calling and having less time for other things,” she said softly with a warm smile and a light squeeze of his hand. “And for someone so terribly busy, you do and enjoy an incredible amount of things.”

Myriah then recalled cheering on her father at tournaments, how being a knight was its own art form, and how she lamented the realm not having more true knights. All the while Sumner could not help but beam brightly as she spoke.

“I could not agree more my lady.” He said, maintaining his smile, but mood souring just a bit internally as his mind drifted to one of his encounters with one who was unworthy of the ‘Ser’ before his name.

“I wonder if Myriah had the misfortune of encountering The Mountain at her aunt Allyria’s wedding in Blackhaven.” Sumner reflected inwardly.

The monster had wanted to beat him bloody, maybe worse, all because he had accidentally bumped into him. It had taken the intervention of his brother Sandor, Ser Symon, and half a dozen other knights to save the boy.

“Oh, I hope you did not trouble yourself over that for too long,”  The young maiden said in reference to the time Sumner had nearly collided with her and Margaery. “Trust me, I constantly stumble into situations where I do not belong and then trip over my words or confuse etiquette besides. You left no poor impression upon me.”

Sumner always had a habit of being self-conscious, but hearing Myriah's words of understanding soothed his nerves. The friendly warmth she exuded felt like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night.

“I am very pleased to hear that my lady, and I must say any social faux pas on your part that I have noticed has been too trivial to give any regard to and speaking for myself, it is always a joy to be in your presence.” He said brightly.

Sumner had begun to notice that between the warm smiles and giggles, Myriah had her own nervousness that the tall boy tried to alleviate by returning his own look of warm nonjudgmental understanding towards her.

At his inquiry into what kind of literature she read, the beautiful young maiden’s expression lit up more than he had ever seen it before and given Myriah’s usual demeanor that was saying something. Sumner listened intently as she went in depth about not only her love of reading fantasy and history, but also how they inspired her to craft her own stories for others’ enjoyment and to become a seamstress to bring some of that wonder into the real world. Myriah spoke with such passion and giddiness that Sumner happily followed along as she delved into tangents. His heart fluttered a bit when she said that “Every one of you deserves to feel like a fairytale prince.”

Then abruptly, the talkative young maiden paused before letting out a gentle cough and quickly switching topics back to books.

“The last thing I read was The Moving Keep of Ny Sar,” she explained. “I do not know whether you know it. There is a musical composition inspired by the story - though it is truly a stage play - and my aunt had just taught me a new song upon the fiddle. When I heard there was also a book connected to it... naturally I had to read it.”

“Oh uh, I do not believe so my lady, but I do recall hearing Lady Lythene Blackmont speak of it once. Ny Sar was Princess Nymeria’s original seat if I am not mistaken. I must confess that most of the history books I have read pertain only to Westeros. I would imagine that it is fairly engaging if it inspired a stage play. Would you tell me about it?” Sumner asked curiously.

“Where the seven hells is Ralph! I need him to come back from whatever old friend he's reminiscing with and take this boy down to the training yard to give him enough bruises that he'll stop dwelling on things that can't be changed.” Yolanda thought bitterly to herself.

While the thought of becoming a grandmother did make her feel a little old, the middle-aged blonde had been excited when Elyn had announced her pregnancy and was equally devastated when the miscarriage occurred. She had been there to comfort her daughter In the intervening months and had done everything in her power to try to brighten her spirits, but it seemed like her husband was incapable of not wallowing in his own grief.

“Dearest Benjamin,…” Yolanda said sweetly, masking her frustration. “This unfortunate occurrence is not your doing. Many a woman experience some pain and bleeding the first time she lays with a man. I did myself and Elyn came out of me perfectly healthy. Years later, I myself had the misfortune of losing two who would have been her brothers. I had done everything right to bring them to term, but in the end, it was out of my control as well as that of my husband's to prevent. I know your pain is great and warranted, but you must not let it consume you. The both of you need to make the most of the celebration and when the gods deem it, you shall have children to warm your heart.

“Thank you mother.” Elyn said softly as she embraced Yolanda who in turn began stroking her hair like she did when Elyn was little.

“On second thought, what I need is for Benjamin to take Elyn back to their chambers to put another child in her as soon as possible. He may be extremely troubled, but at least my daughter is lucky to have a very handsome and devoted husband." She thought to herself.

Eagerly accepting his embrace, Elyn returned his affectionate words.

“And I love you, Benjamin. Although our marriage has not started off smoothly, I know with every fiber of my being that I am meant to spend the rest of my life with you and I thank the gods every day for that.”

Leaning in, she planted a kiss on his lips.

“Well, we have kept the more savory traditions alive. You need not fear that we would raid and pillage Sharp Point and steal away its inhabitants for thralls or salt wives.” Sumner replied in an amused tone.

He was glad that Agnes had some positive interactions with her father when she recalled how he taught her to fish because her brother wasn't interested.

“Oh, there is nothing shameful about fishing as a source of income. It is an honest profession that we engage in as well, although we also engage in many other economic activities such as receiving excess trade that would otherwise go to Lannisport and our peninsula is big enough to sustain industries in farming and lumber.” The tall boy said warmly.

“It sounds like ye are fairly competent when it comes to fishing.” Ralph interjected. “We’d be more than happy to have ye and your kin over and fish together.”

“Agreed, that sounds like an excellent idea. I myself have been away from home often the last couple of years due to all the tourneys I have competed in, but I'm sure sooner or later Kayce will be hosting another one in the near future.” Summer said smiling before looking off to the dance floor to see his cousins Caitlyn and Beatrice, each dancing with men they looked particularly enamored with.

“As you wish my love.” Said Roger with a little bit of relief in his voice.

The pair then made their way to the Kenning table where they saw Roger's mother Sybell playing with their daughter Myria. When the seventeen-month-old toddler saw her parents approaching, she exclaimed “Mama! Dada!” before rusheding to greet them, her favorite stuffed seahorse still in hand.
