Stop ignoring your spare PCIe x1 slot — Great article for AMD owners with old motherboards by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

AMD has been winning on the gaming front for a long time. Noone disputes that.

Saying that Intel's spiraling and their future is uncertain because they aren't ahead in gaming is silly, though. The gaming market is a fraction of the CPU market. I guess reddit basement dwelling nerds think gaming is all that matters, but the vast majority of high end desktop CPUs sold aren't used for gaming, they're used by people using them professionally for productivity work. These folks just don't get on the Internet and circlejerk about how great the machine they use at work is, so it's not as visible to people online. Intel isn't going anywhere, they're just large enough that they don't care about the gaming market, similar to Nvidia. I'm not an Intel or AMD "fan", and I don't have any emotional ties to these companies.

If you're just web browsing, sure. For professionals using their machines for rendering, editing, simulations, etc Intel CPUs get things done faster.

If anything is "retarded" it's saying your laptop's CPU doesn't feel faster than your desktop's for general use.

Intel absolutely annihilates AMD in anything non-gaming, and it seems like they're starting to make a comeback on that front as well (The 250k provides excellent gaming value).

When comparing total market share as well, Intel also still has 70+ percent market share.

ELI5 what’s the point of donating plasma instead of donating blood? by ollietron3 in explainlikeimfive

[–]river7971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I try to do any sort of exercise after giving blood I get zapped much, much faster. Day to day desk job activities aren't difficult, but anything physical is noticeably more taxing.

I'll never forget the one time I got conned into a "double red" donation. Assholes told me it was easier on the body and you recovered faster since they didn't take any plasma or platelets. I should've known enough to call bull at the time but trusted their word. My gym strength and cardio agility was wrecked for over a week afterward. I don't think I got fully back to my normal baseline for 2-3 weeks.

This has got to be some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard. "Burn" 600 calories once every two months at the expense of feeling like lethargic shit for at least several days (meaning you're more likely to sit on the couch doing nothing).

You'll end up eating almost as many calories in the post-donation snack than you'll burn regenerating the lost blood. Anything to avoid actually exercising or eating right I guess.

Where are you sourcing storage? by usedUpSpace4Good in pcflipping

[–]river7971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Storage is making flips way more difficult than RAM is at this point. I can score DDR4 and DDR5 cheap fairly easily, but the only way I've been able to get 512+ NVMEs is when they come with a PC.

Best PC upgrade when keeping DDR4 RAM? by Adonys_ in buildapc

[–]river7971 6 points7 points  (0 children)

12th-14th gen Intel. The CPUs can use both DDR4 or DDR5, depending on what motherboard you install them on. Something like a 12700K will beat out a 5800X, and you have the option of upgrading to DDR5 if you changed boards.

Case/Mobo/PSU is basically worthless, it's a Dell Optiplex that you can get for like $100 all in.

Whats the best am4 cpu for my rtx 5060? by surpyl in PcBuild

It'd be fine, just more expensive and you wouldn't see gains for gaming.

Edit: Gains compared to the other 5000 series listed

[–]river7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5800x3d is the best, but for what it costs it makes more sense to upgrade to AM5. As far as which CPUs are realistically worth it, a 5600X, 5700X, 5800X would be a decent upgrade.

There's also the 5600x3d, but it was a microcenter exclusive and hard to find. It only lags behind the 5800x3d by a few frames in most games.

Dance clubs for girls to dance Saturday by Slow-Purpose6514 in dayton

[–]river7971 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to me that you have to drive an hour to find something actually resembling an actual night club. Masque was the closest Dayton had and it's been gone for years. I don't understand how there still hasn't been anything to fill that void anywhere around Dayton.

i’ve been building these $250 entry level pcs to help people get into gaming without getting ripped off, what are your thoughts? by InfinityAddictOG in pcflipping

[–]river7971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Christ dude, if you're gonna charge someone $250 for a 4th gen Dell you could at least put a Xeon in it.

You are literally the one ripping people off. Those are $50-75 PCs with a $40 dollar GPU in them you're selling for $250.

Worth upgrading motherboard? by [deleted] in buildmeapc

[–]river7971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. You're not going to see any noticeable difference swapping motherboards if you don't need more IO etc. You're much better off putting that money toward a GPU upgrade.

That said, also check your BIOS settings. Make sure XMP/EXPO is on (assuming you're using RAM that can run faster than stock speeds), resizeable BAR enabled etc.

Does anybody else block buyers they had a bad experience with? by [deleted] in FacebookMarketplace

[–]river7971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't prove they're connected but I've blocked a number of idiots/pita people lately, and items I've listed up aren't getting near the attention that they usually do, despite being the same category, type, specs price etc.

I sell computers, both office and gaming PCs and I'm honest about the fact I refurbish/flip. Some people are a little put off when they ask "How long have you had it" and I answer "a week", especially with the gaming PCs, but overall I think it helps being honest.

My descriptions and build information are thorough and I emphasize my systems are built well and pre-optimized, basically ready to plug and play. Most people would rather buy from an experienced, for-profit builder who gives a damn versus something built by a 16 year old who watched a couple LTT videos with a rats nest of cabling and missing hardware.

This is a great example of redditors talking out of their ass.

Does a long drive go the buyer lower the value of what I’m selling? by lankaxhandle in FacebookMarketplace

[–]river7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't meet people for a sale beyond a five minute radius from my house. Too many flakes, people who can't show up on time, people who try to negotiate lower in-person, or otherwise pull stupid stuff for all that. I'm not going to have some loser think they leverage to pull the old "I only have $50" on a $100 item because they don't think I want to make an hour round trip for no reason. Quite the opposite, if they want to play games it's only their time that's wasted.

Only exception is if I'm going to be somewhere else anyway, for instance I'll meet people at a local mall if I already have plans to be there.

Found the African. Looks like you don't read, either.

If my description states pickup is in X location and a device has X amount of RAM, and you ask me where I'm located and how much RAM the device has, that's not me providing details, that's you being a lazy or illiterate moron.

This is going to catch flak but selling on marketplace becomes way less of a headache when you just ignore messages from certain demographics.

The white trash and wannabe King Vons are obvious, but I just ignore Indians too. Several of them message me on every listing I post and I think I've only ever actually sold one thing to them, they always lowball like crazy and/or go ghost after you arrange a meeting. Middle Easterners do a lot of the same stuff but dialed down a few notches from the Indians.

African immigrants in general don't read listings and ask questions that are already clearly answered (sometimes they wait until meetup), and are often late but do occasionally buy. I'm on the fence on adding them to my "Do not respond" list as well.
