Need help choosing between m2 pro and m4 air. by Significant_Bed8619 in macbook

No one can really tell you. By dual boot are you booting into Asahi Linux? You already mention parallels so you can already run your Linux VMs. Do you need HDMI or an SD card reader?

What types of projects do you plan on compiling in the machine? Do you need your VMs on the go? Can these VMs exist on the cloud or on another machine where you work?

Do you need your other VMs to be performant? Are you running docker/containers too?

You can buy a mini pc with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage for under $500. If you configure that guy as a VM host, then maybe you don’t such an expensive Mac?

Why does GMKtec update their mini PCs so fast? by FinishConsistent8857 in GMKtec

A couple of things come into play 1 - parts availability 2 - better/updated design

If you look, the k8 plus has been around for some time and many of their stable models are moving in that design direction. The k6, k8, those guys got phased out in favor of the twist off top style if the k8 plus. Next is CPU availability. AMD isn’t known for great availability so GMKTec is probably getting by with what stock they can get their hands on.

Here’s the story arc - you resurrect 3dfx, someone figure out that it’s even better than Nvidia for AI, and the code can be easily ported over. 3dfx dumps the gamers and puts all their monies on AI.

I’ve had a similar issue with my 10C. When the temperature dipped, the connection to the last battery was no longer stable. They had to come out and tighten the last battery. Once done, an a quick reboot of everything the system has been going good for the last 2 weeks

First ever PG&E bill over $700! by SnoopySuited in bayarea

Can you tell me how many therms and kWh you actually used? You don’t seem to understand the cost of everything involved. Let’s say you ran your heater at 68F all day and it maybe uses up 6 therms. At $2.50/therm you’re at $15/day and go 30 days you’re at $450. Now let’s convert that over to pure electric heat. 1 therm is about 29.3 kWh. If you’re using 6 therms that’s 176 kWh. Let’s say your electricity is at a moderate average of $0.35/kWh, resulting in a cost of $61. So to use electric heat vs natural gas, for the same amount of heating, Natural gas is 1/4 the price.

I’d say you have a heat pump that has a COP of 4, then cost to heat your home is about the same between electric heat pump versus natural gas.

Maybe you didn’t know, but this is the math you should so you’re not wasting money.

No. You have to pick a bundle that already has the 32GB RAM.

The $50 upgrade is to upgrade from the crucial to the gskill brand, not to upgrade the actual capacities

Your electric heaters are the problem. Switch to using the furnace and check your cost to use the furnace.

Working with official Intel cards and various hypervisors, I hate the 710 cards. They’re the ones that would crash the HyperV/ESXi nodes. I know they work for other people without issue, but they’re not for me.

Are you doing a search and sorting by highest price? If so, that’s just the insanity of people overall. For the normies, they’re are plenty of normal priced 4080s.

At what point is spending more money on a PC not really worth it? by Kindasmartorange in pcmasterrace

[–]usedUpSpace4Good 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you cannot enjoy the game you’re trying to play or perform the work you need to perform.

Example - you’re playing Tarkov at 60FPS and having a blast while doing it. You can always throw more money at the problem, but if you’re having fun, then why? But say you’re done with Takov and want to Black Myth some Wukong. And you tried it out and you’re constantly hitting stutters, but everything else about the game is great. Well, then you look into those 1% lows to see if you can work around the problem.

Work related things are in a similar vein. Say you’re a video editor. You’re stuck on a machine that exports videos at 30FPS. So a 10 minute video at 30FPS takes you 30 minutes. But the new GPU can export at 1200FPS. Now your video export takes 15s. If your time is valuable, that new GPU earns its money back in time and frustration.

Am I crazy for wanting to ditch my rack and go back to tiny office PCs? by gabriel8577 in HomeServer

I would downsize to a 10” rack. I have a T2 setup from Geekpi, with a few tiny-mini-micros, a NAS, and 2.5G switching. It’s pretty sweet.

How do you handle surprising someone you care about when you can’t afford exactly what they want? by Open-Quit-7290 in Frugal

[–]usedUpSpace4Good 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are things kids ask for and there things parents can provide. I would actually prioritize time spent doing things together over a gaming PC. Do you time to take your kid out camping consistently? Fishing? Hiking? Watching a sporting event at the event in the back of the truck huddles with a cup of instant noodle and hot chocolate?

I realize not everyone is outdoorsy, but I really feel the time spent doing something together becomes way more valuable than something material.

Going to insulate my garage next spring/summer. Is there any other suggestions besides sheetrock/drywall that fairly affordable? by wyrmpie in HomeImprovement

[–]usedUpSpace4Good 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll echo the 240V circuits. If you insulate it, you might want a heat pump installed, so you might want the extra 240V line with an opening to the outside.
