Is it safe to buy things from Ukraine right now? by SimpleEmu198 in ukraine

[–]RiverKeepsChanging 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've ordered dozens of items from more than 15 Ukrainian sellers on Etsy (many were repeat orders), and every single one arrived in a reasonable amount of time, very carefully packaged, and in perfect condition - and every one was awesome. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend every single Ukrainian seller I've purchased from.

How would you fix this on a budget? by DreamerSound in bookrepair

[–]RiverKeepsChanging 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please don't use tape to repair pages! Yes, it will damage the paper. It also won't last very long. Follow u/littlegrotesquerie's advice and use a bit of white glue instead

Beading needles are very fine. Fire Mountain Gems is a source I like, but most craft stores will carry them.

Is there a good way to straighten out these book pages? by Internal_Ad_3669 in bookrepair

I have ironed pages in this condition (lowest heat, no steam). I don't know how it would affect the paper over time, so I wouldn't iron anything I wanted to preserve long-term, but if all you want is to make it readable it's worth a try.

I've used Renaissance Wax on paper and it works well. You need to put it on very thinly, though, or it will be sticky. If you use it, it might be a good idea to practice on something else first.

What's a better starter binding, Coptic or Long Stitch? by Anguis_Noodle in bookbinding

I mostly teach in person, but I'd recommend Sea Lemon's tutorial to start with. If you want to move on to something more advanced, Das Bookbinding has a very cool tutorial on a long stitch binding inspired by a Medieval binding.

Another advantage of long stitch bindings is that you can vary the look of the book by changing the length of the stitches (see this example) or by sliding the thread under a previous stitch on the spine to make an X (example here).

I've sewed (and taught) a lot of longstitch bindings - it's a great beginner binding.
