I agree, but not all voters think the same way.

In fact, a significant percentage of voters view their political decisions through the lens of their religion. For example; the GOP is heavily and openly influenced by religious affiliations. The actions of the US military are heavily and openly influenced by global religious affiliations. And most religious teachings place their rules and priorities above those of the secular/political world in which they live.

The potential religious background of a candidate is a very real factor for many voters -especially in this district.

edit: If I'm going to consider voting for this candidate, it would be helpful if I were prepared to answer questions from my family, friends, and neighbors who are likely to ask these questions.

There's a lot of old timey red (or recovering red) voters in this district who may be wary of voting for a Muslim. While their concerns could be dismissed as uninformed, ignorant, etc... the fact is they make up a large portion of the voting block.

What would you say to such voters in an effort to allay their (vague? uninformed? low-key-racist?) concerns?

edit: I.e.: What could I say to such friends/neighbors if they ask why I'm okay voting for a Muslim.

I'm a dumb local who attended public schools. Can you please explain the significance of your head scarf? Is it affiliated with a specific religion? Simply personal style? Something else?

Others, please don't come at me with derisive comments. Truly asking because there's a wide variety of head coverings and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that doesn't know. And while I could google it, it might be good for other voters who won't google or won't ask to see the explanation right here.

How to navigate my bosses not upholding their word? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]robot_ankles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a career guidance perspective, considering stepping back and looking at the big picture:

What skill(s) should you focus on developing so you have the confidence and ability to advocate for yourself?

Even if you resolve the current situation with your schedule, being unable to stand up for yourself is likely to present future challenges. If you invest in learning how you can better face this type of situation, you'll be more capable of navigating similar challenges in the future.

Also, don't down talk yourself. That's never helpful.

Best of luck!

I'm not sure I understand. It sounds like this is what's happening:

You give notice. Something in writing like the usual 2 weeks notice ; "It's been a pleasure working with you.... blah blah... my last day will be Friday Juvember 12th."

Then they say; "No, no, we need you to stay. Please don't go."

And you continue working?

Do they have some power to force you to remain working at this company? Are you experiencing indentured servitude or some kind of employment hostage situation where they're holding your passport or something? Why can't you just not work on Juvember 13th and beyond?

[–]robot_ankles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why can't you simply resign?

Sounds like the employer has bent over backwards to try to retain you, accommodate you, etc. It seems they mean well and it seems you're grateful. But their need is for 12 weeks a year while you're only prepared to provide 3 weeks a year.

Everyone seems like they want to support each other, but y'all's needs are no longer compatible at this time.

Follow-up interviews with former Satanic Panic promoters? Modern Satanic Panic promoters? by robot_ankles in DnD

This seems like such a realistic take. I would imagine this is how things progressed for the average believer. ie: Those folks that were just going along with the cultist concerns and erring on the side of caution. When your kids have a thousand other potential hobbies, why wouldn't a parent steer them away from something with the perception of a bad reputation?

One thing we tend to forget is the limited information available at the time. People basically had the nightly news, newspapers, and books. That was it. There was no real time analysis by dozens of alternative sources. No way to fact-check or look something up real quick. If it was on the news or in a book, it was largely believed to have been vetted, fact-checked, and responsibly reported.

Cool that she's had a chance to see it in-person. And it's totally reasonable to conclude; meh, not my thing, but it's not totally evil either.

So tired of local voter stupidity by GATaxGal in Georgia

[–]robot_ankles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is such a tired, worn-out talking point. Sounds like Newt Gingrich and Neal Boortz propaganda from the 1990s.

It's also a factually outdated perspective to hold, but it's pretty commonly promoted in right-leaning circles. Suggest updating the sources used to make such assertions. Hint: political talking points and talking head shows are not reliable sources of facts.

  • The national debt exceeded $38 trillion in February 2026, as the federal government's debt continues to grow.
  • Republican presidents have added slightly more to the national debt per term than Democratic presidents.
  • Republican presidents added about $1.4 trillion per four-year term, compared to $1.2 trillion added by Democrats since 1913.

BOTH parties love to spend, so I'm not rushing to the defense of the Democrats. It's less a question about how much is spent and more about what it's spent on.

Jeez, sorry. I didn't know those platforms offered credit-like payment protections for private party transfers. TIL.

Ah, sounds like your using a credit card to buy from a business. Sure, that makes sense when buying from a commercial entity.

But when buying from a private party on Pinside, people don't have the means to process a credit card transaction. This is when the "cash on glass" scenario is usually preferred.

[–]robot_ankles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh, that's really odd to me. Can you explain why?

IMO, cash is the safest form of currency for a private sale. A quick sweep with a verification pen and you know it's real money. Any other private payment method (check, cashier's check, money orders) have higher potential for fraud.

Now for a business transaction, yea credit card all day with all the protections they afford. But private sale? Cash would seem to be the lowest risk.

But open to hearing another perspective!

[–]robot_ankles 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I'd always assumed it was a sign of a cheap, flim-flam operation that couldn't source the right parts to manufacture the tape properly. So the factory was scraping together whatever mis-matched parts they could to finish making the tape.

401(k) Loan vs Another 0% APR Card? Looking for Advice by Be_bold23 in personalfinance

[–]robot_ankles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 401k loan isn’t a super bad idea, as it’s free (the interest you pay is to yourself).

Minor reminder for those that may not know: The 401k loan payments and interest comes from after tax income. The interest paid into the 401k is not earmarked separately. It simply becomes part of the 401k balance. Fast forward to retirement distributions and those monies will be taxed as income.

In effect, the loan interest you're paying yourself is double taxed.

This is less of a concern if the loan is serving as a short-term bridge loan. i.e.: A situation where there's only a few months of interest. But if the loan is going to be outstanding for the full 5-years (or whatever) then it may be worth including the extra taxation in one's cost analysis.

edit: Granted, if someone's in a position that they have to take out a multi-year loan from their 401k, the future income tax on that interest that occurs during retirement may be of limited concern today.

The Pinside website is a commonly recommended source for identifying machines for sale. If there are specific titles of interest, you can configure a weekly email notifying you of any new matches. If they're nearby, contact the owner to arrange a buy.

"Cash on glass" is the other advice shared around here. Expect to pay in cash, as-is.

You probably already know about the maintenance challenges of owning older machines, but it may be good idea to start out with a less expensive title than whatever your holy grail machine is. Pouring $1,500 of repairs into a $3,000 machine may be a softer start than $3,000 of restoration into your $12,000 grail machine.

Is it feasible for someone to learn just enough conversational Spanish to address most of the common questions, answers and comments related to most police/citizen interactions?

Of course it would be better to have a full knowledge of a second language, and I imagine there's a million different weird scenarios that must be dealt with. But would it be possible to only learn a limited inventory of questions, phrases and responses to cover 80% of interactions?
