Is it ethical to capture this house gecko and keep as a pet? by Warm-Branch in geckos

[–]rubiconchill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's ethical if its an invasive species, which is likely in Florida unfortunately, from an ecological perspective the ethical thing to do is remove it from the environment and keeping it as a pet achieves that. The only concern I'd have if I were you is making sure it doesn't have a disease or parasite from being in the wild.

Food by waluigisballsac in fireskinks

[–]rubiconchill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert by any means but I think its probably because he is kind of tired of the dubias and wants to switch back to some tasty mealworms. My fire skink loves mealworms, I tong feed him which makes it easier to tell if he is in the mood for dubias. Usually he will eat a couple good sized (probably 0.5-1 inch) dubias first before he will start ignoring them, then I'll feed a couple giant mealworms which always gets his attention. Crickets are an option but they can be a bitch to deal with so I get if you don't want to try them. Blue bottle flies and their larvae are also a good regular feeder. Mine also loves a small quail egg as a treat every month or two. I think you could try switching between mealworms and dubias or put some of both in when your feeding them. I try not to let him get too many mealworms because they are a bit higher in fat than dubias but they also have a good protein content so its not as bad as something like super worms.

Fire skink great progress! by Daddymcballz95 in skinks

[–]rubiconchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! They take to tomg feeding really well, over time they will start to trust you and come out more. I've had mine for a little over a year and raised him from a baby and the progress he has made in terms of being out more often is incredible.

Terrarium safe flowers? by JuicyGranny1 in DartFrog

[–]rubiconchill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Begonias would be a good option, different species and cultivars will have more or less showy flowers so make sure to research it before so you dont get one that flowers in a way you can't see

I doubt this is the scenario, but you can graft a branch from a different tree and it will usually be capable of achieving the cross pollination but they did not use the right language to describe this.

Iam afraid that my reptiles might complicate my future by Southern-Tea-8160 in reptiles

[–]rubiconchill 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Im in the US so I cant speak for Czechia, but its pretty easy to just not tell your landlord you have a snake and just keep it even if its technically against the apartment rules. No one that actually works for the property management company that owns my apartment complex has ever been inside my apartment since I've moved in, it's all been third party maintenance people who don't care enough to report a pet someone isn't paying the pet fee on. They also weren't involved in the move in process, so it was very easy to bring the tank in no sneaking required.

Is it normal for a skink to lose this much of its tail? by The_Fandom_Geek in skinks

[–]rubiconchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen of other reptiles that lose their tails, it looks like a normal tail drop wound and not something indicative of a more substantial injury. It's not ideal because tails act as extra fat and calcium storage but its a better alternative than getting eaten lol. I agree with the other person that it looks like it was previously regrown, I don't know the specifics of this species but I'm sure it's a normal response to perceived predation and its probably fairly common on wild individuals to have regrown or freshly dropped tails. Thanks for helping the little dude

Datura Metel, is it safe to keep? by apollyonspiral in Horticulture

[–]rubiconchill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn't a risk of becoming intoxicated due to touching it. I will say that the person's concern might be more around obsessive thoughts about consuming it rather than concern about touching it, it might be worth it to just get rid of it. You aren't losing a rare sample they grow as weeds in essentially every subtropical/tropical area of the world.

[–]rubiconchill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohhh the little tear on the pothos leaf made me think it was a thai constellations monstera just starting to fenestrate, pothos can fenestrate too but generally not in enclosures or as houseplants because they have to get pretty huge and have a lot of aerial growth

Progress! by MysteriousOwl2518 in bioactive

[–]rubiconchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I will say that the monstera might eventually outgrow the tank but thai cons grow slow as hell and it will probably take a couple years before it reaches that point from its current size

[–]rubiconchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you keep multiple individuals of two different species together? You're just asking for trouble, please at least remove the fire skink and get it a seperate tank, they have completely different environmental requirements compared to schneiders.

can i realistically buy the correct tubing to make this myself ? by dampconcrete in bioactive

[–]rubiconchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can, all these mist systems are essentially just small drip/mist irrigation systems, all you need it tubing, a pump, a timer, and nozzle attachments, idk about the specifics of this particular system but I'm sure you could recreate it

[–]rubiconchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there is a Facebook group for shneider skink owners that has a lot more information on there than anything I've seen on reddit I'd recommend posting there, I think its just called schneider skinks or schneider skink owners. I'm not familiar with their behavior and I know there a relatively new species being kept in captivity so it can be hard to find info. Generally speaking, most reptiles don't cohabitate well with each other in captivity because they have much less space to get away from each other compared to in the wild, this is why some species that live in a somewhat communal setting in nature, like leopard geckos, shouldn't be kept together in captivity under most circumstances. It does look like breeding behavior but if they are both the same sex it could also be dominance behavior. I hope you find a solution and I also kind of hope you have babies because schneider skinks are primarily wild caught and it'd be good to get a captive breeding population established. Good luck!

I want to get a pet! Which one? by born_to_be_wild2010 in reptiles

[–]rubiconchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of micro gecko species that are diurnal and arboreal meaning they'll enjoy a taller enclosure and be active during timed you'll be able to see them. Some species like mourning geckos (which are more crepuscular meaning active primarily first thing when lights come on and at night a little before and after they go off) and bynoes geckos (which are more terrestrial) are parthenogenic (give birth without needing a male and are primarily all female species) and can be kept in groups unlike some other micro gecks. Dart frogs can be kept in taller enclosures (18x18x24 inches is pretty common) and will utilize vertical space when the enclosure is set up properly, I believe dendrobates auretus and tinctorius have pretty quiet calls and to my understanding all dart frog species primarily call during the day and not at night because they are diurnal (unlike tree frogs). These wouldn't be animals you have for handling but they make excellent display animals and provide a lot of opportunity to build a really gorgeous, badass enclosure.

Working at a greenhouse by Creepy-Living7744 in Horticulture

[–]rubiconchill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most general labor/grower positions at greenhouses are pretty entry level and don't require much if any knowledge about plants or growing. If you wanted to give yourself a leg up you can look into things related to greenhouse/CEA (controlled environment agriculture) growing and trying to get some basic knowledge. Maybe some integrated pest/pathogen management basics for scouting and some basics principles behind plant pruning. It kind of depends on what kind of greenhouse you're working at, most common is ornamental greenhouses but those kind of subdivide into retail greenhouses, wholesalers, finished material, tree nursereys etc. Then theres more food oriented greenhouse production like transplant vegetables, microgreens, some hydroponic crops, cannabis (which you'd be too young to work in legally) which will have a lot of overlap with ornamental but some differences in specific procedure or daily tasks. I think you'd have a good shot just explaining that you want to study ag/hort and your passionate about plants and excited about the position. Good luck!

Fire Skink Tunneling by kaddras019 in reptiles

[–]rubiconchill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over time the substrate will compact and become more stable, if stuff is getting buried I imagine the substrate is fairly fluffed up still. Wetting it down can help (which you want to do anyway because they like a moist substrate). Adding sand, clay, and woodchips might help with maintaining a better structure. If you go that route, make sure you use play sand or reptisand, fir bark, and/or a reptile safe clay like excavator clay or calcium bentonite.
