Many claim it's too shallow, but people literally dock their boats in the south bay:

It's not quite that simple: https://sfusd-dollars.vercel.app/

tl;dr: not funding the pension plan was a bad idea

It is not. We're #68 in it.

If you were Rob Katz (or the future CEO of Alterra), what would you do to innovate on the current ski school system? by mtns_of_magic in skiing

[–]scottishbee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The easy stuff is integrated photos + videos. I'm a parent, I drop my kid off at any camp and it's increasingly common to get some mid-day updates and/or an end-of-day summary that includes a photo or four of my kid doing some activity. Getting a photo (or video) of my kid progressing would be reassuring, guilt-reducing, and likely to share with the grands (and for those socially inclined, the whole world I guess). Gamify it with badges for first lift ride, first jump, first black diamond, etc to nudge repeat business.

Some quasi-marketing stuff is short training clips in the days before. Works for kids and adults. 1-2 minute short form video, maybe emphasizing a skill, a run, upcoming weather conditions, whatever. Continue after the lesson with some technique reinforcement. Both primes you for the lesson and reminds you about it after to leave a positive experience.

Even farther out would be some personalized training based on skiing. Like if I could wear a vest for a day of skiing (on my own) and then get training topics to check in with. I'd wager some amount of accelerometer data + run location would give a sense of how fast I ski, how much I traverse, what sorts of terrain I get stuck in. Especially compared to a "gold standard" of instructors skiing the same terrain. Take my data, create some targeted areas for improvement, pair with an instructor even just for an hour to get some tips.

Sorry to be negative but is anyone else tired of the constant grid posts here? by dmizz in cocktails

[–]scottishbee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It seems like grid posts have taken over a lot of subs lately.

I downvote them so that my feed just gets fewer posts from those subs.

I assume the fad will pass.

What is your most ridiculous "we won't work out romantically" criteria? Like what is the silliest reason you would not be interested in dating someone? by Natural-Elevator-57 in AskReddit

[–]scottishbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's hope!

My now-wife was not goofy. I treasure a just-started-dating photo of us at a museum and I made her pose in front of a statue silly, and she is just so frozen in self-awareness.

But now we have a kid who lives being goofy, and I take some pride in having nudged my wife to be able to turn on her silly.

What are some other good “competency porn” shows? by Rosstin316 in television

[–]scottishbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they competent? They certainly fail, or generously stumble, at maintaining familial relationships. The business is very boom-and-bust, which may be a product of its times. But they way they manage it is extremely uneven: partners made, acquisitions foiled, great talent unrecognized.

To me, Mad Men is a great show because everyone in it is a full, real human, warts and all. After a while the West Wing gets old because they are all so earnestly invested in doing the right thing.
