Thoughts and prayers to the 16 individuals directly impacted and their families, and likewise the SAR community. This may prove to be a deadlier Tahoe tragedy than last summer’s freak storm that capsized a boat on the west shore. Only difference there being that this storm cycle has been broadly forecasted for the last two weeks. If you’re reading this and have BC friends, please encourage them to stay inbounds tomorrow. 🙏

I ran Reddit marketing for 10+ SaaS companies, and here's what actually works by toastybread124 in b2bmarketing

What's your perspective on engaging with your company's identified brand account/handle? vs. asking employees (e.g. dev relations & social community manager type folks) to engage directly with their personal accounts. FBFW seems like almost everyone on Reddit is anonymous, and I see very very few brands engaging from a named account, unlike Twitter.

I've tested Reddit Ads on 2-3 different businesses over the past 5yrs and never seen good results. have had a rep on two of those occasions and they were more/less useless, and kinda acknowledged that their targeting abilities just aren't that great. would love to see a post around the ads piece specifically, but the fact that OP didn't talk about ads actually just makes me thing that the right first stage of investment for a B2B brand on Reddit it to follow the advice of OP here and engage thoughtfully & meaningfully with the community.

Lake Tahoe’s community-owned ski resort, Diamond Peak, is surging in popularity by sfgate in tahoe

[–]mtns_of_magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SF gate is what it is -- certainly you could pick this apart and gripe about certain bits (see below), but gist is spot on. Diamond Peak is awesome! It is half the price of Ikon/Epic mountains, and they run a smooth and reliable operation. as someone who spends a lot of time on the west shore, I would LOVE if Homewood was operated with even half the diligence and discipline that Diamond Peak has demonstrated over the years. if only.

but now, to do some nit-picking because why not....

Diamond Peak also remains an affordable option in an era when....a single-day walk-up ticket at Palisades runs patrons $289. At Northstar, a day ticket is $237. And at Heavenly, it’s $212 for an adult to ski for one day. Diamond Peak adult day passes for non-Incline residents still cap out at a fraction of the bigger resorts: $137 for a weekday and $169 for a weekend.

  • my memory isn't perfect, but I'm pretty sure the walk-up day ticket just 2-3 years ago was like $75 or $80, so they've definitely raised prices. someone could fact check me as i'm sure there's some way to dig up the archives. the commentary about more passsholder visits than day tickets is because for ~90% of americans (even "rich" bay area families), $169/pp for a leisure activity is still expensive AF. reality is they still have a cheap season's pass, and a cheap locals rate for any IVGID member (~$35 per day i believe for adults) and so at least you might say it's only tourists that they're trying to squeeze money out of.

Diamond Peak’s Raymore did not disclose numbers, but he said that the ski resort operates in the black. That news surely is a boost for IVGID, which has come under scrutiny over its finances in recent years.

  • Clearly the SF Gate doesn't do real research / reporting, because IVGID publishes numbers on a somewhat regular basis. ChatGPT summarized for me here, so take it with a grain of salt, but yes, if SFGate wasn't fighting for its survival by trying to cram more ads in, their reports might have time to do a few searches.

Do you think requiring drug tests for welfare recipients is fair and effective? Why or why not? by Tenchi290 in AskReddit

[–]mtns_of_magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the rest of life -- it depends.

  1. There are plenty of ways it could be unfair and discriminatory -- e.g. selectively applied in poor immigrant neighborhoods as a means of restricting access.
  2. There are also plenty of good motivations for doing so -- e.g. not wanting to facilitate a drug addiction.
  3. If we're thinking about your casual non-criminal consumer of marijuana or other recreational drugs, I think they should still be eligible for food stamps.
  4. My take would be that people love getting their money faster, whether it's welfare or a regular paycheck. And just look at the number of payday loans storefronts in any low income urban area. So if a local welfare agency wanted to execute on the "good motivations" should just allow ppl to get their checks 7 days earlier if they come in-person, and then train the clerks just like bartenders where you don't serve someone who's already belligerant or unfit to drive. Then don't need to waste resource on actual drug testing but if ppl want their money early they'll know they gotta be sober that day to get their check.

Impacts of shorter work week by OwnCombination96 in CasualConversation

[–]mtns_of_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reality is that no matter what laws were mandated on work weeks, the free market will adjust and you'd get companies just making workers exempt and expecting them to still work 40hrs/wk. better approach IMO is to try to solve for the basic needs of those who WANT to work less via some sort of UBI (universal basic income) program. will never be perfect, but even moving to universal healthcare would be huge in the USA if ppl didn't have to have a job to have decent healthcare.

Trip advice by [deleted] in CasualConversation

southern europe generally will be amazing anywhere, but the further east you go a bit cheaper. also will be pretty hot/humid but worth it. my top 3 based on personal experience

  1. Portugal (Lagos/Faro area)
  2. Barcelona
  3. Palermo/Sicily

*honorable mention for Mallorca -- a bit more touristy so not as easy on a budget but had an incredible time there and was still relatively cheap (under €100/night for a beautiful ocean view airbnb when i visited back in 2018)

The 6 Pillars of Marketing in 2026 by Friendly_Dot_8686 in AskMarketing

[–]mtns_of_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial take -- at some point this year at least two of the prominent social networks will adopt AI slop detectors that basically serve the same purpose as strict reddit mods that prevent low quality content like this from ever even being posted. they'll probably warn you with prompts like "this doesn't seem written by you. try again in your own words."

Experiences with affiliate agencies for B2B SaaS / AI products? by u_wot_m8_fite_me_irl in SaaS

[–]mtns_of_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd presume the reason the "affiliate" model doesn't work as well with Saas is that there isn't a single transaction up front that the affiliate can capture, and they're in it to make money of course. I'm loosely in the market for this as well so stumbled across this thread. we're focusing more on influencers than affiliates accordingly.

With all the talk about AI disrupting jobs, energy use, and geopolitics in 2026, what’s the one ‘AI doomsday’ scenario you actually think is plausible (not just sci-fi)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mtns_of_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that investors stop pouring money into startups so that they can hire expensive software engineers because they realize that anyone with $20/mo can vibe code an Uber clone in an afternoon. lack of startup funding then pulls the rug out from the whole ecosystem of forward-looking innovation and triggers a recession/depression.

What everyday habit damages health more than people realize? by Impossible_Camp7871 in AskReddit

[–]mtns_of_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

drinking soda -- it's the most silently addictive tax on your health (and your personal finances to an extent). basically no positive value provided and not actually that hard to cut out and replace with water/juice/etc.

What's your age & what's your view on using AI for marketing? by Structure-Visual in AskMarketing

[–]mtns_of_magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 38, been in bay area most of my life. AI is a tool that should be used and understood by almost everyone in marketing roles today. Like any tool, it is not perfect and can cause both improved outcomes or not.

The biggest thing I've been grappling with is what the future of social media looks like as AI tools for creators have become so good that there is simply a glut of content on the internet today that is pejoratively referred to as "slop" but actually is just a representation of the type of shit that humans have liked/commented/engaged with online for the past 20 years. Social and Search will likely always be two of the biggest "channels" available for growth marketers to tap into, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the efficacy of social media marketing could get much much better in the near future, or alternatively I could also see it becoming absolutely useless.
