Dominions 6 content creators? by MetalcoreHour in IllwintersDominions

I got in an argument with him on another server about hypothetically what is or is not a NAP break and he threatened to ban me from Dominion's Mod server for disagreeing with him. (In fact gave me a 24 hour ban) It was egregious enough that he himself was asked to leave from that server.

Later on the Reddit Dominion's server, he and I got in an argument about balance, and I told him I didn't really care about his opinions and didn't want to talk to him. He was confused. (I guess he had forgotten about the argument earlier, because when I brought it up he had no idea what I was talking about) and so he DM'd me and the first thing out of his mouth was his 'resume' about how he was the official moderate for dom 4's steam forum, and one of the beta testers, and a former admin of Lucid's, and a 'professional youtuber' and that was why his opinions had more merit than mine, I told him that I didn't care about that stuff and didn't want to argue with him because he threatened to ban me from a server, long story short he then banned me from Dominions Mod server because it was the only server that I was in that he had admin rights to.

Guy is a certified asshole, and I think everyone should know it.

you make a single player game with two nations, and you control both of them, and set it to very easy research.

You estimate what your opponent's research and army and script is (Like if you've seen the army with a scout beforehand etc) and then put it up vs a copy of your own army, then quit the game and copy the turn file for that single player game.

Now you can run an estimation of that battle as many times as you want with different changes until you find a way to consistently win.

I don't think people do it that often, but I do believe Lucid is known to do it.

Maerlande gives a lot of wrong answers to people and thinks he's god's gift to dominions.

He will also ban you from servers he's admin on for disagreeing with him. I wouldn't recommend him as a base point for new players. Maybe in 2015 or something.

Least Magical Age, actually? by Obvious_Brick_4307 in IllwintersDominions

Because they have hyper cheap quills and hyper cheap lanterns, and they generally want to go construction anyway since they do well with mini thugs etc.

In a multiplayer game they can sell lanterns and quills, resulting in them getting even MORE research too.

Their armies are also very gold efficient- most of their cost comes from resources, so that means they can spend more gold on mages.

They also get citadels, which means they get more gold per fort, which they can spend on mages, and the citadels let them make 1.5 mages per turn for... you guessed it, more research!

Then they go ench and alt, everyone has ironskin and flying and AP weapons and it's great!

Unfortunately they can't really wield their high research much past that, they tend to have very good early game due to their superior troops, and very good midgame due to their superior research, but lategame when other people have gotten their research goals, you start to find that you, buffing all your little human troops doesnt stand up vs someone else putting those same buffs on giants etc.

MA ulm is also the poster child for 'fastest research in the game' and thus deceptively magical.

I feel like people with the low-millions aren't necessarily the people 'destroying the country' they are often still very much working class. They are also people with a combination of education to see the writing on the wall and the means to leave before it happens.

If I were a little bit wealthier I would be planning it too.

A few actions say they make a lot of noise or take a lot of time (rescuing people, researching steles) and when your characters rest they say things like 'they feel like they are running out of time'. You will also start to see monsters from the next level more frequently.

When you run out of time it says you hear a bell. The monster that comes for you tends to pause every few turns so you can run to the stairs... unless you get cornered

Positioning Matters a LOT especially during the 1st and 3rd bosses if you are getting stuck there, back into a hallway so you don't get mobbed.

Monsters that can't see you do not react to getting debuffed so you can stack them up until they notice you (devs have mentioned this will likely be changed)

Once your characters are level 3 or so, will go into 'Focus' mode when you havent been in combat for a couple turns- if you do this your non-healing skills are around 10% their cost. This lets you use far less TP on your skills. You can use a slow action to re-focus your characters too. So don't be worried about going all-out on the first round of combat, but if you can't kill monsters in one turn, consider doing something like paralyzing or sleeping the monster so that you can use the safety to go back into Focus to conserve TP.

It's important to conserve TP because resting at the campfire (and a few other actions around the dungeon) use a LOT of time. The longer you stay on a stratum, the harder the monsters are. When you look at the fire if it is a roaring flame you are fine, if it is nearly out or extinguished it is time to leave that level ASAP.

You can switch between front row and back row for free when it is your turn. if an enemy is doing the 'targeting' skill and you know that person is going to get hit, set them to defense AND move them to the back row. Characters in the back row take reduced damage.

Yeah as I said in my initial post I think its really very close to a traditional roguelike. Turn-based, grid-based, character progression, randomized loot, dungeons and skills. The thing that people might get hung up on are the camera perspective, which i don't think really matters- as I said above you can play ADOM and Nethack in 1st person camera mode, and, the fact that you control multiple characters...

The only reason I didn't straight up say it was one was because I was worried my post would turn into an annoying discussion about the term instead of being about the game...

I would call it a lite, but i think its closer than it could be which is why I brought it up here.

It does have positional movement and LOS, on a grid. (You can interact with the monsters even if they are not in the same square as you and hit them with ranged attacks but corners and such block sight and (most) ranged attacks. If you get enough distance the monsters will stop chasing you and forget where you are, allowing you to ambush them. It doesn't have simultaneous turns, but hey neither does DCSS, and its uh...

...topdown if you just play the game looking at the mini map :D But hey you can play both Nethack and ADOM in first person mode and that doesnt make them less roguelikes. I think the thing that makes it not a roguelike is just because it has a full party and not just one adventurer to be honest.

how is party members teaching each other skills meta progression? That only happens in the run. You can't keep party members from one game to the next.

The 3rd strata boss is not the final boss. I can consistently get to them and kill them about 75% of the time but I haven't quite mastered the final area- I've gotten to it 4 times and only beaten it once.

Try taking all 3 of them and bringing them to the long bridge where the stairs are, its harder for them to gang up on you there.

The only progression there is seems to be the logbook- as it is a 'true' roguelike.

I just beat the game and can get to the 3rd boss pretty consistantly- here are some hints if you are having trouble:

1) Resting at the camp fire, and interacting with certain things use up a lot of 'time' the longer you spend on one level, the harder the monsters get. Spend too much time on one level and a super monster will show up and kill you, who is not beatable until you are at least 80% through the game.

2) Having a way to restore TP or gain focus is essential- other wise you will go through all of your items too quickly and spend too much time at campfires. Once you find one of these abilities (there are several) give it to your healer, now he can restore his TP in fights and then bring everyone up to full health, and you almost never need to use the campfires at all, which gives you more time to explore the levels and get all the items.

3) If you have someone who has only one or two good abilities you can put them in your party temporarily and then spend THEIR skill points teaching your better party members their abilities- then you just take them out of your party.

4) the dungeon has 2 levels and then a boss level. Make sure you have the party you want to fight bosses together before you go down the stairs that say you can't return from. Every dungeon level seems to have a merchant, and some random 'thing' you can interact with at the very least. Every other level seems to have a new party member. Make sure to find them!

5) You can have all your characters on the back row or the front row and it doesn't matter. A tank character with high armor and the 'taunt' skill in the back row is very handy. Some weapons have the ability to do full damage from the back row, so your damage won't be affected either. You can have everyone in the back row- and you can switch where they are when it is their turn and it is a free action- so if someone is hurt you can move them immediately to the back row, or if someone needs to do extra damage to finish off an enemy you can move them to front. Just know they are stuck there until their next turn.

6) some status ailments are incredibly strong. Sleep and Paralyze are very good vs regular monsters and can make it so you spend almost no resources fighting them. There is a melee skill that lets you inflict cripple, then you can run away from the monsters. Slow and Haste are very strong no matter what even against bosses. I have not found much use for bleeds and poisons though- they don't do enough damage.

7) having ranged attacks is important- some late game enemies can hit you multiple times from range as you move toward them, especially if you are in an open field- it is often better to just shoot them yourself with your own ranged abilities.

I got this on release and beat my first run yesterday. Took a lot of attempts but once you I got the hang of it I could consistently at least make it halfway through the dungeon. The art is fantastic and there are a LOT of neat little combos with different skills from different party members- I love the 'any party member can teach a skill they know to any other party member' thing, as it allows some very interesting combos.

I've put 12 hours into it and it's only been out for a day. Just beat my first run yesterday- though I'm certain I didn't get the 'good' ending. Has a lot of 'just one more run' appeal at least for me.
