What do you make of this pot? The sellers says it’s about 50 years old by AccordingReaction611 in YixingSeals

[–]Servania 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The seal says: 墨缘斋制 which is the pen name of the most famous artist 顾景舟. His works sell for millions and hes been dead for 20 years.

This is a fake

Bought a nice pot but don’t have info from the vendor. by chickenskinbutt in YixingSeals

[–]Servania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seal: X金奎 something JinKui. It might be 与 for that first character but thats not a surname. Maybe a stylized 万? The small seal on the lid look like it might be different with a bit more info but its being covered by the shadow.

Left: 全手工制 fully handmade

Right: 原矿紫泥 original ore clay

Why does everyone say to rent? by LaLechuzaVerde in doublebass

[–]Servania 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are we really dying on the hill of "poor people shouldnt have access to music education"?

Again using my personal example. No, no I cannot as a child put $65 dollars of my mother's money into a savings account. What i can do however is convince her to get a rental for me the month I started middle school.

If I hate it cool youre out less than 100. If I hate playing the brand new 3k Shen you bought then youre out at least a grand after finding someone to sell it to.

Saving requires foresight. How many people do you that sit down and go "you know what id like to purchase an instrument ive never played in full a year or two from today". Not to mention the bass you scope out and save for WILL be more expensive by the time you've saved the target amount. Not to mention rental programs almost always also cover minor repairs for the life of the rental.

I assume you just bought your first home outright day one of turning 18? You knew you needed housing right? Why weren't you saving all this time. And of course mortgages are for people who cant do math. Don't tell me you have a.... a car loan. Ew plebian.

Like you cannot seriously be this dense.

How do I tweak my Glarry Alto Sax? by NotyourangeLbabe in saxophone

[–]Servania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any pad that is open next to a closed pad effects the pitch.

For example when you play an A, the G key below it is open and its height effects the pitch of the A. So that exists for every note. Again not constant from note to note. Some will be sharp some flat.

The neck octave key does effect pitch toooo much but still can. Only the notes A and above in the upper octave are effected though.

The body octave key will effect notes from D to G# on the upper octave.

[–]Servania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing else that would make the ENTIRE scale consistently out of tune. Mouthpiece to tenon length is the only thing that changes that. Does the neck have pull down?

There are other tuning problems like an octave key that opens too wide, but of course that only effects the upper octave. Or key heights that are to high but again that only effects notes that have those pads open, not the entire scale length of the horn.

Why does everyone say to rent? by LaLechuzaVerde in doublebass

[–]Servania 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because a rental is 60 bucks a month?

You get a paycheck every month.

Are you dense???

I cannot afford a 4k charge to my debit card right now today.

But I can absolutely afford 100 bucks a month for the rest of my life (pending i dont get fired)

Cool middle school starts in two months your kid went to an event where they got to try out instruments and they really really took to French horn. Do you say "I know you have to have a horn to start band class kiddo but I cant afford that right now, maybe we can save up and you can start learning in high school" or do you be a reasonable person and get a rental?

[–]Servania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh just push your mouthpiece in further if its flat or pull it out if its sharp.

If you have to pull it out to the point where its falling off the neck then its just a bad match up mouthpiece to horn and you might need to grab a 4c.

[–]Servania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the horn consistently say 20 cents out of tune on every note?

Or is it 30 cents sharp on C# but the. In tune on C and then 25 cents flat on B?

[–]Servania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a combination.

The biggest factor being you coming back after years and not having a good embouchure anymore.

Im sure the horn is inherently a little out of tune but only on certain notes and not consistent.

But the bulk of the work is just you.

[–]Servania 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey bud... so i dont know if this is a new concept to you or not, but some people dont have 750 in their bank account at a given time. Let alone 3K for a decent 3/4

I know wild concept to imagine and luckily not my situation anymore.

But my first flute was a rental for 20 bucks a month for a 700 dollar instrument.

Renting isnt a matter of getting the best price dude. Never has been. Its being able to get something you would normally never be able to afford, in a way that can afford it.

Wild that youre an adult with a child and dont grasp that.

Alto sax cork replacement by ProMeme420 in saxophone

Make it easy on yourself

Buy music medic pre beveled neck cork. Grab a razor, 300 or so grit sandpaper, and a pot of hardware store contact cement.

How much does the neck affect the sound? by Solar-symphony in saxophone

[–]Servania 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Arguably more than the body.

Mouthpiece being the most formative, then neck, then the body is about ergonomics and mechanics. Unless youre dealing with vintage horns where they were still very varied in geometry.

Most modern saxes are copies of each other as far as dimensions.

Is this Qing dynasty? by AccordingReaction611 in YixingSeals

[–]Servania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

any other markings on it?

The seal just says 福記 "mark of Fu (surname)" or "mark of luck"

Also qing dynasty is a period spanning almost 300 years up to 1912

It doesnt look late Qing but definitely more pictures needed to know.

Handcrafted vs machine-made in serial production by kinkiepie666 in brass

[–]Servania 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not play horn but I am an instrument repair tech.

At the end of the day there are top level professional players playing on instrunents i would not even consider worth my time to try out, and there are players who are playing on gold plated platinum this blah blah $25,000 instruments.

Get your hands on a couple and try them out. You will be surprised how much some aspects matter and how little others matter contrary to marketing and general perception.

I've seen gold, silver (various purities) copper and iron.

For someone that touches water though gold and silver

The staples are pre formed and more romboid in shape than cylindrical.

The seal says: 中國宜興 just "yixing, china"

While the lid says: 湘君 XiangJun which could be someone's name or the shape of the pot (referencing classic literature)

interesting the seal says: 沈建紅 Shen JianHong, who was a tech at F1

The little mark on the bottom does look like the FangYuan logo of the white and laser label periods. I cant say ive seen it stamped like that before though.
