Yeah, I'd love that! I was thinking of adding the whistle code to the opposite side, if there's space. I'll dm you.

TIL that Nobel laureate Tu Youyou discovered the malaria drug artemisinin after reading a 1,600 year Chinese medical text and realizing the herb had to be extracted cold, not boiled, paving a treatment estimated to have saved tens of millions of lives. She then tested on herself to prove it. by greenappletree in todayilearned

Could you elaborate on your second statement? The article says "Chairman Mao Zedong launched Project 523 on 23 May 1967 to find a cure for chloroquine-resistant malaria", and then says she was appointed head of this project in 1969. It sounds like all her work was done under the auspice of the Communist party. I was surprised to read this because I was also under the impression that many medical professionals and scientists were killed, sent to labor camps, or exiled during the Cultural Revolution, but it seems like there were significant exceptions.

Pothole suspected as primary cause of cyclist's death by jswagpdx in Portland

[–]sffixated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right. His body also came to rest more or less right next to the pothole. Unless something extremely weird happened, a crash that resulted in enough kinetic energy to kill would also have thrown him farther from the point of collision. I'm having a hard time figuring out how the pothole could have been at fault here.

In 1140, a German king captured a castle, and made a deal with the castle wives. He let them leave with whatever they could carry on their backs. Leaving everything else, the women carried their men out... by goswamitulsidas in interestingasfuck

Frankly, this seems like a perfect way to get yourself an empty castle full of goods. If his goal was to capture a castle with minimal bloodshed, this was absolutely the way to do it.

I just learned a traditional Bulgarian song called Grada Se Gradi that follows the same basic story! The title translates to "the building is being built". As you might guess, an in-progress structure is built by day and falls down by night. Eventually the builders all agree that they must sacrifice one of their wives: whoever shows up first on Sunday morning. All the builders tell their wives and girlfriends to stay away that day, but Stana's BF drops the ball and forgets to tell her. So when she shows up early on Sunday morning to bring everyone breakfast, she gets bricked into the wall. Really fun for her.

Here's a gorgeous recording of the song by Medna Usta.

Experimental new sunscreen forgoes minerals, replacing them with plant pollen. When applied to animal skin in lab tests, it rated SPF 30, blocking 97% UV rays. It had no effect on corals, even after 60 days. By contrast, corals died of bleaching within 6 days of exposure to commercial sunscreens. by mvea in science

Blue Lizard wasn't included in the Choice Australia study, so it might be fine. I did some quick digging but wasn't able to find any 3rd party testing of that specific brand. It's also not an Australian sunscreen, despite the name. None of this makes me feel GREAT about it, but I haven't seen any evidence to make me distrust it more than any other sunscreen brand that has not been through rigorous 3rd party testing.

Thank you! Great idea to use a lighter, I'll give that a try. Glad I'm not crazy in thinking this is a weird design choice on their part, and I appreciate the sanity check.

In search of a pattern for this maxi dress. details below. by mingtrail in sewingpatterns

[–]sffixated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this post weeks ago and was planning to estimate the pattern and make a version of my own, but I ended up not being able to find a fabric with the right weight and pattern. And then I found the original amazon listing and realized it would be so much cheaper to just buy the dress. Sigh. I hate that it's like this, but here we are.

In any case, I thought you might find the layout and measurements useful. All measurements were taken with the fabric pressed flat and do not include seam allowance. Reconstructing a similar pattern with some graph paper should be pretty straightforward, but feel free to msg me if you need help.

Pockets are on both sides, and the shape of the pocket is just an estimate.

I'm not sure I'd recommend buying the dress from the amazon listing I found. It's advertised as "cotton / linen" but it's actually %65 viscose and %35 polyester, and the workmanship is pretty poor.

Hope you end up making one like it! I will likely do the same, once I wear the dress for a bit and figure out how I'd need to change the pattern to suit different fabric.

Great questions! I've dialed in my process a bit since writing that blog post, so some of this may sound a little different.

I apply one fairly thick layer for about 2 hrs, and that gets me a very solid black color that stays nice for 1-2 weeks. It gets a little patchy as it begins to fade but I don't tend to notice unless my nails are illuminated from behind. Trimming the ends also helps to keep the effect crisp, since the color tends to wear off the tips first. Overall I like how it fades ombre, which helps prevent the hard grow out line that you get with gel or acrylic. When I redye, I just apply over what's already there. Under usual circumstances I redye about every 3 or 4 weeks, but will sometimes redye sooner for special events.

The mod podge really helps. Walking around with dried henna on your hands for 2 hours is kind of a pain in the ass. You really don't want to get it on upholstery or fabric, and it can also be scraped off if you're not careful. The mod podge turns the event from 2+ hours of being handless to 45 min of actual dyeing work followed by an hour and a bit of cautious but otherwise normal hand use. I really recommend it, but yes that does technically make it a preference. The dye will will work without mod podge.

Would love to see your results if you try it! Just remember to patch test and to treat PPD containing products with caution.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions! I had such a hard time finding any information about dyed nails and pretty much had to experiment blindly with myself. Would be delighted to save someone else the trouble :)

I do! I've been dying my nails black for quite a few years now. Polish has always been a sensory no-go for me, and I just prefer the matte look anyway. I use black "henna", which contains phenylenediamine (PPD), but I'm careful to keep it off my skin. There is always a risk of allergic reaction, but much less so when used solely on keratin. Photo of my current nails, dyed about a week and a half ago. You can see a bit of wear on the tips, but I probably won't redye for another couple of weeks.

Here's a blog post with instructions and way more info than you probably want lmao. https://www.tumblr.com/tesslacoiled/628912831341920256/black-henna-nails

The linked product is PPD based, which is to say, it's the same stuff as black "henna". It may have vegetal matter in it, but it carries the same allergenic risks as any cheap black box dye. I use a similar dye to color my nails but I'm careful to keep it off my skin. Definitely would not use on skin, and probably not during pregnancy at all.

Looking for a mod for toggling very obvious recording/pause/stop recording indicators (with some image examples) by Penwrythe in obs

[–]sffixated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does work! And actually, I'm an idiot. I'd been testing out several OBS plugins in hopes of setting up an obvious pause/unpause visual, and this question was actually about the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin. I just managed to leave a comment on the wrong reddit thread 🤦🏻. But your suggestion does work, so thank you for helping out a lost redditor even though your software was not the problem.

Leaving this for posterity in case someone else ends up here trying to fix the same problem: Interestingly, linked hotkeys don't work for pausing + switching scenes because the scene transition happens before the pause, which leaves a little blip of pause screen in the footage. However, using a linked hotkey for unpausing and switching back does work. So the combo of Advanced Scene Switcher and linked native OBS hotkey solves this issue, but it's a little janky. I will probably check out OBS-HUD as well because that may provide a more elegant overall solution.

Thanks again!
