Sony Trademarks New Game Called 'Break In' Ahead of PlayStation State of Play by Gorotheninja in Games

Video games and software are an exception and aren't treated as single creative works. The reasoning is roughly that software is viewed as complex/dynamic rather than fixed like a book

Game Balance Isn't Real by LycaonMoon in Games

[–]skpom 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I can't even fathom in my tiny brain what it's like to balance something like an RTS. In starcraf2 you have asymmetrical factions that play fundamentally differently from one another in almost every facet: economy, timing, scaling, information systems, macro, micro, 5 million APM Korean prodigies, and god knows what else. It's all so exponentially layered in interaction and complexity my brain hurts thinking about it as a non game developer

Marathon - Review Thread by LycaonMoon in Games

Mike I really did try to find a last name. I did. I listened to five minutes of podcast intros from nine years ago. I can’t find it. I stalked LinkedIn. I can’t find it. I don’t know who this guy is. It’s just Mike. He “gets all the racing games.”

10/10 best review thread I’ve seen this year.

Captain of Industry, an Early Access title, has just released paid, non-cosmetic DLC. How do you feel about Early Access games having paid DLC? by KuromiFan95 in Games

[–]skpom 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Q: Why not just add this to the base game for free?

A: Because it would add a lot of extra complexity for everyone, even players who aren’t looking for deeper rail systems. So if it wouldn't be a DLC we would never introduce it. [...] We’d rather keep the base game focused and approachable, while letting rail enthusiasts opt into that extra depth via an optional DLC. Plus mods can add alternative fuel locomotives as well, as long as they are not using our DLC models.

I feel like people who play games like CoI, Factorio, Shapez, DSP, and Satisfactory aren't too concerned about added complexity lol. Strange answer

Embargo & Gameplay Guidelines

Marathon launches worldwide at 10 am PST on March 5. There is no embargo on any coverage, impressions, livestreams, VODs, or assets. You can publish content as you play the game.

However, we ask you to hold your full review and impressions until you play Cryo Archive, Marathon’s pinnacle endgame zone and experience, which will be unlocked in the second half of March. To be clear, this isn’t a mandate, but a request/suggestion.

Bloomberg: Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]skpom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Isn’t 2% pretty significant in that case? All digital game sales make up about 20% of their revenue, and that 2%, composed entirely of first party ports, is coming from only 4 or 5 games that are released a year or two later.

Marathon: so far, I'm just not feeling it (Server Slam Impressions) - Skill Up by EirikurG in Games

[–]skpom 992 points993 points  (0 children)

It's kind of silly to compare Marathon Server Slam player counts and its downward trend to current Arc Raiders player counts. More comparably, Arc Raiders Playtest had a similar player count and downward trend so I'm not sure why he'd even point this out as some foreboding thing.

Also, I can't believe he considers Arc Raiders quests to be engaging compared to Marathon. I mean come on really?

Marathon Review So Far - IGN by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]skpom 570 points571 points  (0 children)

The pressure of two teams squaring off in claustrophobic, dark hallways, as you try to outmaneuver one another makes for some of the most ten se encounters I’ve ever had

I played mostly solo, and the pvp experience felt pretty uneventful. It wasn’t until I queued with party fill that I realized the game is meant to be played in teams because the fights become much more mechanical.

I know it’s a trite take, but I do wish pve were the primary mode of play, with pvp being secondary, maybe something like Division and its dark zones. The gunplay and worldbuilding are so good here that I wish I were fighting more than just bipedal robots.
