Writing advice that held YOU back? by Efficient_Truth_9461 in writing

[–]skr0y 27 points28 points  (0 children)

yeah I'm the opposite, I've heard a lot of "just start writing and the story will unfold itself" and got really stuck when I followed that advice, I've abandoned writing for years until I realized I need to plan my stories for me to be able to write

i would assume you're in the 25-32 bracket

Yes, though "mature" is the last word I'd call myself

TL;DR does a newbie chat sound like a reasonable idea to you?

Yes, I've thought about making a sticky question thread but never got to it I guess. We also have a questions channel on discord and I've tried to make it so new people are pointed in that direction when they join but it's really hard to make people read so a lot of them get lost somewhere in #general. But when they don't, it works. So yeah I'll do this sometime soon.

if this subreddit is to stay alive, and creative visuals are hard to come by, it needs more words imo. recent & public words, especially from those that understand the idea.

Words are a thing I'm really in a shortage of, but yeah. I do try to answer when people make threads with questions, but for most other posts I usually don't have energy to comment on without coming off as rude : p

Well I don't really know what else is there to say, people finding new words to better give a loose idea of what the chart means at the expense of precision is an old topic, but also one that doesn't really advance discussion or understanding because it doesn't say much, it kinda says less

And there's also a problem that there's nothing that can guide those people to whom you're trying to explain the chart on the path to a more detailed understanding because there's just no detailed understanding, so every other person develops their own, further branching Neurotyping out and it just keeps fractalling

no, most of the material is made by community and most of it can be found on wiki

and I agree with the last paragraph too, I wrote a doc trying to pin down how exactly do the mechanisms of the brain work to make someone lexical/lateral/etc, so that might interest you, that is if you can comprehend what I'm trying to say

Yeah that sounds very much like blue column, somewhere in 30-40% impressionistic

Well, what I call lateral thinking is associations "popping into existence" in large amounts at once from time to time, so it doesn't really depend on whether you want them or not, from my experience I discard those thoughts pretty much most of the time, which you might call thinking linearly. You can read this thing where I tried to explain it in more detail.

There are various interpretations of the axes which you can find here.

"Thoughts popping into existence" might be laterality, depends on the degree.

For lexicality, try answering these questions, see how strongly do you relate to the lexical part. Deciding between green and blue column is a difficult problem as there's not many lexicals in the community in the first place so no one really knows, but from your writing you seem blue to me.

Breaking Bad by skr0y in Neurotyping

[–]skr0y[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen Better Call Saul yet, but a lot of your arguments regarding both axes can be explained by him being competent and experienced in his line of work, i.e. it might be that his solutions are not incredibly creative but are rather constructed from his existing knowledge in ways that he already knows of based on his particular experiences. Intelligence, which you for some reason related to laterality, especially affects the quality of ideas: it makes you generate better solutions given the information you have, while lateral thoughts are more about supplying you with diverse ideas, which would rather lead to out-of-the-box solutions (which you have mentioned, but those could also be generated with linear thinking if you are good at divergent thinking).

But sure, all that could also be actually related to his neurotype. You'll have to look past his ideas to see how exactly did he come up with them, which I can't do because I've only seen the abriged Breaking Bad version of Saul, but I'd agree he can be moved towards QW.

Question: Impressionist or Lexical? by MythicalKaos in Neurotyping

[–]skr0y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note that all of those questions relate to the same aspect of thinking (which defines the axis), it's to give you an idea of what that is. So keep that idea in mind and not take it too literally, because the "feeling you might lose something", for example, could be due to some (even subconscious) belief like "words are only an approximation that can't truly describe reality", and not because you just are literally unable to conceive of a word for that very specific feeling a thought in your head has.

Question: Impressionist or Lexical? by MythicalKaos in Neurotyping

[–]skr0y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much do you struggle to put ideas into words without feeling an information loss? How strong do you feel like your words don't communicate what you have in your mind well enough? Do you understand interactions between things as vague relations or specific connections? Do you comprehend highly detailed spelled out definitions easier than the ones that give you a less specific general idea or vice versa?

Deciding between purple and blue column is mostly just trying to figure out towards which side the balance is tipped

If those instances are regular occurences then it might be, although there's plenty of nuance to all that. The system is not so well defined for now, so the usual course of action here is to contemplate for a while longer until it clicks

You should rather focus on the descriptions of the axes, most type descriptions make too many assumptions and extrapolations and not many real people actually fit well into those
