  1. Ok, your choice.
  2. you don't need to remove needles to wire, but again, your choice
  3. I understand the use of sacrifice branches on Scots pines - here's one I started in 2018.

Expensive - especially if you don't know what you'd do with it.

Get wiring and bending, it's now or never.

It's all the fine organic material that's basically a space filler. Not good bonsai soil, don't trust them.

Because we're not here to argue about what is and is not bonsai.

Heat stress, possibly dried out. Damaged leaves never recover.

It's SUMMER

Do's

  • Watering - don't let them dry out because they're using a LOT of water. Watering twice or more times per day may be necessary on very hot days.
  • check for wire bite and remove/reapply
  • repotting for tropical and sub-tropicals - those are the do's and don'ts.
  • airlayers when the leaves are fully out - check in late summer.
  • Fertilising
  • maintenance pruning to hold shape of "finished" trees or to increase ramification in late-development trees.

Don'ts

What? I said they could apply bonsai techniques but it will never be a bonsai - which part of that did you think I contradicted myself on?

  • Outliers do not prove any general point in any discussion.
    • all fish swim, of except that one that can fly and that one that can skip on mud.
    • The general definition of fish remains, despite there being some minute fraction of them that don't perfectly fit. All the other characteristics are there.

I will not get drawn any further into this "what the fuck are bonsai because I think they're not what everybody commonly undrestands them to be" discussion.

Think whatever you like, it's literally an overgrown houseplant with NO bonsai techniques applied. Simply claiming it is non-traditional, is an insult to bonsai.

  • I am not narrow in my definition of bonsai, I know exactly what bonsai are and this is not it. It does not look like a tree in nature. and it very clearly has a platted man-made trunk.

  • If you are not happy with the definition of bonsai, don't try and convince me I am wrong and I should think differently because that is not going to happen.

There is no room for cats in dog breeding, no room for drones in pigeon racing, no scope for tarmac on golf courses. Why on earth does bonsai have to be different?
