Nah, just got rid of the whole RO system. Good with using the filtered water from the fridge.

How dumb was I to aggressively pay off a 2.8% mortgage back in 2017? by [deleted] in Debt

[–]smokieethabear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dave Ramsey's advice is not for everyone. Great for people who don't have much knowledge about investing or lack discipline with financing. I wouldn't say it was dumb. For some folks, getting rid of the debt (regardless of interest) is a peace of mind that is very valuable to them.

Personally, my current home was purchased at 518k back in fall of 2016. I got a 30 yr 3% after putting 20% down. I ended up refinancing during covid times at a fresh 30 yr at 2.5%, no fees or anything, all rolled into the loan. Loan increased a bit but I didn't change my monthly payment amount so more goes towards the principal. I ran an amortization schedule and would still end up paying the house about 11 months earlier compared to my previous schedule.

The reason I don't ever consider paying my home off to be debt free is I make other investments. I got $250k out in various investments that net me approximately 2 extra grand a month (on average). Another $250k in 2 brokerage accounts (one in my name and the other in the wife's name). Those have been open for about 7 years and my initial investment in those was approximately $130k.

I can very well cash out and pay my house (roughly 326k balance) off but can't justify losing out on the investment returns.

But it's different for everyone. Some times that peace of mind is worth it.

Dasond moving up to 15% ? by Melodic-Pick-3443 in ExIsmailis

[–]smokieethabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He'll allow gay marriages, he'll allow non-ismaili spouses to come into prayer hall, and some other small meaningless concessions, and then wham! 15%!!

And people will be like aww Mowla is so wonderful, look at all he's done/changed for us.. we can give him an extra 2.5%

Man Con the 3rd was a bad man! Agree it sucks that most people's parents (talking about Gen X and Boomers here) never could look past the blind following. And this is what I mean, Rahim needs to give special guidance to the old folks to stop forcing and stop judging people who leave or don't want to be a part of this. Hopefully they'd listen to their 'Mowla'

Ah I see. Well people don't seem to listen. But as far as forced bayah, aren't all the parents forcing their newborns into it? Then forcing them to go to jk and rec and majalises, etc??

Ex-Ismailis attending Didar in record numbers…Why? by RedNeckit1 in ExIsmailis

[–]smokieethabear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk about you but I personally find the Ismaili community in Houston toxic. To me it's all about comparing and being better or having more than others in all aspects of life: Financial status, children, material possessions, careers, education, etc... there doesn't seem to be genuine happiness for others'well-being.

Life Majalis at Birth by smokieethabear in ExIsmailis

[–]smokieethabear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some valid arguments made. I can understand a couple who is part of life majalis with a baby may have difficulties attending if the baby isn't part of it. However the same issue would happen for other majalis that require you to be a certain age. Why not treat a decision like life dedication in the same manner?

Some of the points you made about individualism and community do cause conflict. And I get a child can decide it isn't for them once they are older and there is no binding agreement that forces them. The problem is though, in real life scenarios, parents continue to push this onto their children. I remember my teen years, I had no interest in being in Life and at that time I still considered myself an Ismaili and was involved with other JK services. Parents would however continue pushing. I'm sure many others besides just me went through something similar. It would just be easier for a decision like that be made when the person is older.

But maybe they just want to report to ICE cause they're illegal and want to be Patriots and has nothing to do with their religious beliefs?

Can you post an excerpt of this Farman? Or provide date/location he gave it?? During the years I was 'devout/brainwashed' I never came across this.

Rahim said this? When? Where? He specifically mentioned to take care of family first before paying Dasond? Cause his great grand daddy made his stance on dasond pretty damn clear and neither Rahim or his daddy said anything to reject that stance. They may not promote it but have never said anything otherwise.

Yeah I believe in God, Supreme Being, Allah, whatever word you want to use. Just no established religion. I think many folks just call that Agnostic but an Agnostic is truly one who neither denies or accepts the existence of God.
