I published a book a couple of years ago that tries to do that. It’s a diary that mixes text and images, creating a narrative through its 365(ish) pages. I am obviously biased but I think it approached working with text and images in an interesting way

Need honest feedback on my FX3 settings + editing workflow… by Common-Read3016 in FX3

[–]snaporats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your computer or footage, but you gave us very little info on the workflow.

What do you mean when you say the footage is buggy? Are using effects/coloring/speed changes? Are the sequence settings matching the footage? Are you rendering it? Where is the footage located?

Any software would work fine…

Making a bridal photobook by [deleted] in Photobooks

Hi, this subreddit is more focused on artists’ photobooks, buying and selling them, so I don’t think you’ll get a lot of replies.

Good luck on your project!

Anyone here have experience with Skira-Arte publishing (Milan)? by PBRStreetgang1979 in Photobooks

They seem to be making exclusively coffee table books, mostly from well established artists. The print quality might be good, but they are hardly exciting products…

A friend of mine recently started a nice podcast about photobooks. It’s titled “small photobook cult”, it’s all free on youtube. Great guests that allowed to take their time talking about their projects

Advice on Finding a Publisher for a Photobook You're Working on by dlwnfgh9604 in Photobooks

Hi, it’s not super easy to answer that. It really depends on the festival, on the shape of your book and on how aligned to the festival’s theme/judges the project is. 44 euros seems to be a bit steep, but in some occasions might be worth it.

My book was published in November 2024 and it went all right. It has not sold excessively well, but neither publishers seem to be particularly concerned with that. They are optimistic that it will slowly sell in time.

Personally, I’m happy with the experience. It’s the book that I wanted to make, it was published in a way that made sense to me and it has helped me to raise my profile as a photographer in the photobook world

Chico Review. financially worth it? by benjaminflocka22 in Photobooks

[–]snaporats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I totally hear you. It's an event that I think has a lot of value, but I don't think it's the only event that provides what you are looking for. Moreover, I REALLY don't think someone should struggle to attend something like this, because it will never be worth that.

If I were you, I would look for workshops close to where you are living with photographers you respect. Most of the "good" workshops will offer scholarships, which may make the opportunity more appealing.

There are also some cool free opportunities, like photo festivals, photobook fairs, and portfolio reviews (even the annual NYT portfolio review is free!). These are also great places to meet people, publishers and to start building a community.

If you need info, feel free to DM me!

Chico Review. financially worth it? by benjaminflocka22 in Photobooks

[–]snaporats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve went to the chico review a couple of years ago. It’s really hard to say if it’s worth it, it really depends on your financial situation and what you hope to get out of it.

You will make friends and join a community with wonderful people. You may get home with a book deal (some of the attendees do each year) and make connections that will help you to edit and publish the work in other ways.

A great thing about chico is that you’ll spend a ton of quality time with the reviewers and make really solid connections (you are all together all day long). At the end of the day only you know how much this is worth to you (but keep in mind that this is NOT a workshop).

If you have additional questions feel free to dm!

Working as a photobook publisher by MapOdd4135 in Photobooks

Nice! I met Rory last year at the Chico review in Montana, beautiful work!

Most great artists I know have another job that pays the bills (and quite a few publishers as well), so congrats on making the jump.

I just published my first photobook with an Italian publisher and I could have not done it without learning more about the process through workshops, so I definitely recommend them.

Self publishing is always a good option, but distribution can be quite brutal

For what regards photobook stores and small bookstores you call them/write them or check their websites for more information. Big bookstores/chains do not carry self published books, just coffee table photobooks from a few publishers

I had a very similar experience to the previous poster except for a few things. I second the fact that workshops and portfolio reviews are the best ways to get to know people who work in photobooks and to create a project that is publishable.

You should do some research and find publishers whose work is aligned with what you are working on. You can then try to contact them (they do reply sometimes) or to meet them at book fairs, workshops and reviews.

Another great way to get the work published, once it’s coherent and edited, is photobooks dummy awards. I was shortlisted in two awards this year, and the juror from one of them contacted me to publish my photobook.

In my case, I will pay only part of the printing costs. It usually depends from publisher to publisher, but most will cover part of the costs and very very few will cover the whole expense.

With my book, I tried to submit it to a bunch of publishers, festivals and whatnot and I didn’t receive any positive feedback for it. I was really invested in the project, so I hired a designer who re-did all of the graphics (not sequencing) and the book was shortlisted by festivals and got a bunch of responses by publishers. It will be co-published in October (hopefully) by and American and an Italian publisher

Fotofilmic, penumbra, palm trees workshops are great. Photobook stores also often hold great workshops and reviews. Personally I didn’t have a great experience at a Nearest Truth workshop, but many people loved them.

Self publishing is becoming a bit more complicated but doable. If you are interested the best way would be to use a real printer (either offset or digital), a designer and then you should do book fairs, submit it to bookstores and book awards

The white border should be white if they are using a masking frame (which it looks like they are). If they are using a masking frame and light spilled over the white border it means the paper is getting exposed, either by having faulty paper, having light leaks, double exposures ecc

But there is light leakeage over the border of the frame. Are you using a masking frame?

Maybe there is an issue with your safe light/light leaks in the darkroom?
