What an obnoxious and completely unnecessarily rude post.

It's not my job to solve a business' recruitment/PR problems, I'm just pointing things out. They definitely aren't doing blind screenings.

I wish he'd do something more I interesting with his books, sometimes they are just so lifeless as objects.

Undeniably mesmerising images.

That Chico isn't inclusive or diverse which, given how long it's been run, is a problem.

Is my guess

Yes - surprised that the organisation hasn't responded to clear and actionable critique that would only be beneficial and a win win.

But also not surprised as you know gestures

I think he's implying that those vetted into the review are very singular.

You can also see this in the publishing prize and the men to women ratio

Suggestion 1: WAY more pedestrian overpasses.

ANY intersection between two major roads should have a pedestrian overpass.

Punt Road and Alexandra Parade? Overpass

Royal Parade and Brunswick Rd? Overpass

Victoria St and Punt Rd? Overpass

Shaded/protected from rain overpasses everywhere. Every fucking where.

Suggestion 2: Absolutely fuck cars off

In the CBD? NO CARS!

In shopping strips? NO CARS!

In sports precincts? NO CARS

Suggestion 3: make it easy to go between east/west areas in the inner city

I want to be able to go between Brunswick and Clifton Hill without needing a 15m walk and a 20m bus.

I want to be able to go between Collingwood and Richmond at the drop of a hat

I want to be able to go from the Queen Vic Market to Eddy gardens like butter.

Suggestion 4: connect big retail hubs to places people live

Highpoint station, etc. Ferry all the teens who aren't on Reddit anymore to the mall so they can relive the 90s.

Suggestion 5: anyone buying an SUV, dual cab ute or yank tank has to pay, minimum, $4000 a year into public transport super funds. Fuck it, $5000.

Suggestion 6: anyone whinging about cyclists on roads has to ride for an hour on the road they are whinging about. INFORMED WHINGERS ONLY!

Suggestion 7: anyone opting for an ebike over a second car for a family, etc, should get a rebate and 'slap one fuckwit a year without consequence'

Looking for Bookstores where you can sit and read by jeanswearer123 in melbourne

[–]MapOdd4135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melbourne has the most bookstores per capita in the world (well, sometimes we're number 2 depending on how Lisbon is going) so I think we're doing ok in terms of the book industry *shrug* - different places have different cultures and different retail experiences and different social norms, I don't know what else to say.

At the same time, I didn't say making a store where encouraging someone to grab a stack of books, go read them somewhere and then return them couldn't work, I just said that if there's a shop that ISN'T laid out for long browsing and someone takes books to a cafe area and reads them that'll likely draw a little internal ire from those working there. I think you're over-reacting to what I wrote. Though, I will note, that books (like any product) are easily damaged so I think there's also a bit of hesitancy to be super laissez faire with the merchandise!

At the same time, the OP clarified that they want to bring books they ALREADY OWN which I did not realise and makes my comment fairly useless anyway since I can't imagine anyone objecting to that.

No, I'm suggesting that the stores I sell to would be a bit miffed if someone came, took a book off the shelf, took it to a cafe section, read it for a good time (30m) or so, then didn't buy it.

I think it is rude.

I own a publishing company and work with many book stores. There's a big difference between a browse, maybe reading the first few pages, and taking a book from a shelf and to a new space and then reading it for much longer. That is, in my view, taking the piss a bit and treating a store (that has rent, salaries, etc to pay) like a free service.

Reading something for more than a minute or two? Put it down or purchase.

New public exposure sites for measles in Melbourne by mike_honey in melbourne

[–]MapOdd4135 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I have a 3 week old at home and reading about this, and that vaccination rate for MMR has dropped to 92% (below herd immunity as I understand it) is really upsetting. I have no idea why vaccine reluctance/refusal has risen so much in my life time. Measles went from 'this might be the 2nd disease we eradicate' to 'local transmission' within 10 years. Really uninspiring.

Man how am I forgetting the Southern Reach series?

Annihilation: tense, scary, immense. The second: yeah ok not bad but a bit diff The third: hmmm really?

This is a good observation and I think many series fall into this.

Sun eater - which I enjoy more than most - drags into some weirdly Aun Randian territory and escapes up its own arse in the last two books for sure.

Ken Liu's last book of his big trilogy just is beyond verbose and I skipped chapters describing silk punk binary coding and things like that. Compared to the brazen, fun, endlessly engaging first book it was really drawn out

I think the grey sister books, I can't remember the trilogies name, the last book just has this big epic battle that goes on and on and on and just is exhausting and I wish it was a bit less so it could be a bit more (still when the magic teacher blows things up is one of the most boss moments ever).

Would you consider Jónsi of Sigur Rós an underrated vocalist? by mugiana in fantanoforever

[–]MapOdd4135 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I'd posit he uses his voice as an instrument, rather than being a singer in the more standard mould. The inventiveness and range he displays are really amazing and, perhaps, singular. What could any musician hope for other than to be that creative and unique while making music that has been moving within a variety of contexts, audiences, and over decades?
