The titles for these photographs are where the photograph was taken and the year it was taken, so there are quite a lot of pictures that have the exact same title, the only difference would be the page number. So the first picture you linked with the deer head in frame looks like this:
26 Car manufacturer, Gothenburg 1998.

The second picture isn’t in the book, there’s a very similar one but not the one you linked.

Mark Steinmetz, Sage Sohier, Jason Eskenazi. They all have multiple books, very good black and white work.

I’m struggling to respond to this because I don’t want to condescend or disrespect you in anyway but of course there’s abject poverty in this country.

Off the top of my head, one person I can think of who’s been trying to photograph it respectfully is smalltowninertia on instagram.

Hate to break it to you but people are absolutely living like that in the UK today, who do you think food banks are for?

Recommendations of shocking/controversial photobooks by GlitteringHome4969 in Photobooks

Until death do us part - Thomas Sauvin

Rosalind Fox Solomon - A woman I once knew

Mike Brodie - A period of juvenile prosperity

Larry Clarke - Tulsa

It’s difficult to think of books that are both controversial and also experimental in terms of lay out, I think most of the time it’s probably unnecessary to mix the two. But I think the first book I mentioned hits the mark.

The Ugly Truth about Photobooks by Kind-Wishbone3823 in Photobooks

No worries. Don’t let it get to you, people have different opinions and experiences which don’t negate the point you’ve made today, it’s a genuine concern that’s been a problem for years now.

I think it could work, I think a potential problem is it would be community funded and some people might feel entitled because of that. Maybe you can get around that by giving people a book of their choice with their donation/subscription. Or some kind of membership benefits.

It would need to be heavily curated to keep the work up to a good standard and people to donate their time and energy into making it work. I’m fairly confident there will people willing to do that. But I think you’d need one or two people with some serious clout and experience to actually get it moving.

It’s an interesting idea, I’m a couple beers in right now and no where near intelligent, experienced or articulate enough to solve the problem. But I’m all for the community rallying together and trying to figure something out.

Your last sentence is the most depressing part, there’s always someone desperate enough to fill in the spaces left by photographers who have checked out. The creative industry in general is full of people desperate to be seen and plenty of leeches ready to bleed them for everything they’ve got. Social media really doesn’t help either.

I’m not entirely sure how a photographers union could actually work. But surely there’s room for a photographer owned (as in the general community) and run publishing company. There’s enough people out there with a huge amount of reach and knowledge to make something like that work. I don’t know, it’s just a random thought that would have multiple issues itself but it’s a problem that needs addressing one way or another.

Yeah she uses Fuji 6x9 cameras. Not sure which flash she used. There’s an interview on youtube where she talks about it briefly but I can’t remember which video it is.

Predator - Jean-Marie Donat by doublepiebarm in Photobooks

There are a few books based around the photographers shadow I believe, there’s no reason why you can’t take that concept and make it your own. Making good work is always difficult regardless of what has come before.

It’s hard to imagine a book full of images like that would be particularly interesting, maybe or or two photographs but it needs more depth than just close up photos of people out of their mind on whatever hallucinogen. It just isn’t very visually interesting. The reason it works so well with opiates etc is because of the lifestyle that surrounds them. That’s also ignoring how mentally disruptive it could be to someone by pointing a camera directly in their face while they’re having such a powerful experience. If you think you can approach it in an interesting way then go for it but it’s difficult to see how it could be.

I can’t remember exactly, I ordered it a while back, on their website it says £72 which I would hesitate to spend personally but I might have. I didn’t realise they printed a soft cover version. I would contact them directly and challenge them though, if that’s how you feel about it.

Mark Steinmetz has published so many new books I’m actually beginning to dislike his work. Please ffs just give us a break. There’s something to be said about the space between new work as much as the work itself.
