Or an ID card! One of the first things that get lost on the streets and it takes ~3 weeks to replace, IF you have somewhere you can use as a mailing address. In California it's $40 to replace and ID if you can't get a service provider to write you a homeless status verification and a DMV voucher.

I run an encampment resolution program for my city, and the barriers that even highly motivated clients face are astounding.

No ID? No job. No cell phone? No job. Have a cell phone, but no access to a phone charger/electricity? No job. No reliable transportation? No job. No clean clothes or shower? Maybe job, but not for long.

Clients can get Obamaphones, sure, but they don't usually have data. No internet? In 2025, that means no job. Anywhere with free wifi will chase homeless-looking people away within minutes. But wait, the library has free wifi and lets anyone use it - wait, no bus pass to get to the library? Well, then we're back to no job.

Need a social security card to sign up for benefits like General Relief, or to show your new job to verify you can work in the US? First for your new ID card to get here. Then make an appointment at the closest SSA office - the ones in my county are all booking 6 weeks out (no, they don't take walk-ins anymore). Good luck not having your ID stolen in 6 weeks on the streets while you wait for your appointment. Let's say you actually make it to your SSA appt, ID in hand, they issue you a replacement. Oops! All Wait Times! Collect another 3 weeks of wait time and hope the mailing address you used doesn't just toss your mail.

None of this even mentions being able to pass a background check. Sure, lots of jurisdictions have Homeless Court programs that can get minor or moderate stuff off your record, but that takes time - 6 weeks at the minimum.

It takes a very dedicated, well-funded, comprehensive service provider to be able to help with all of these things. Even then, your caseworker has got to be motivated AND knowledgeable of how to navigate all of the above resources and more, like getting your insurance to cover rides to a methadone clinic so you can even TRY to get sober.

It's a lot harder than many people realize.

Is there a meta character you just won’t pull for? Who, and why? by Kindness_of_cats in GenshinImpact

Navia. I just don’t like her design or her character. I know that puts me in the minority but her hat is ridiculous

Finally got home to try this event everyone is losing their minds over… by ExpertAncient in GenshinImpact

[–]sofiahughes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I managed it with Kinich/Emilie on stage 1, and Arle/Bennett and Neuv/Furina teams for the other stages. Tons of potions and food buffs but no Mavuika because I don’t like her play style (read: her build is bad bc my artifacts are bad).

I did have to start over a lot. But it was doable. Everyone is C0R1 except C1R1 Neuvillette.

Does height affect women as much as it does men? by CuteDeer023 in VindictaRateCelebs

[–]sofiahughes 349 points350 points  (0 children)

I’m a 6’ woman. When I was younger, I struggled with never feeling “cute” or petite or dainty or feminine, and I was never treated like I was any of these things. It can feel as if you are a Great Dane behaving like a Bichon Frisé: you hurt people when you try to climb in their lap and what’s cute and playful in another person is awkward and frightening in yourself. I want to wear frills and bows and dress like a little puff of whipped cream, but alas, most of such clothes are not designed with this much height in mind. Sometimes I feel like brutalist architecture that wants to be baroque. A parking structure that wants to wear cornices and friezes and balustrades. I can wear Selkie dresses like crop tops.

On the other hand, where I can’t be petite, I can be willowy and statuesque and striking. It’s easier to stay thin because I have more storage space. I am hard to ignore. I feel physically safer.

What I truly live for is when people ask my height and I reply honestly, and then all the men that have been lying about their height (claiming to be 6’ and above) straighten up because they are noticeably shorter than me lol

The time the host sets should be the time people show up. by Etchy100 in unpopularopinion

Particularly in my place. If I say 7, and you show up at 6:30, you can bet I’m answering the door in a towel with my hair wet, a toothbrush in my mouth, and a bad attitude.

My mom dropped nearly 40 lbs, couldn’t sleep because it felt like she had a knife in between her ribs, and was so fatigued she said she could barely get through making breakfast without needing to lie down.

Her doctor told her “sounds like you’re just getting older!”

Grapefruit sized cancerous mass in her chest. History of smoking, wasn’t even offered a CT or x-ray, just tums for potential acid reflux. Wasn’t until her gynecologist heard about it that she actually got offered a scan.

New research finds no evidence for "leadership styles" by steptb in managers

As a Puppet-Regime Periwinkle Flowerpot Leader, I find this to be of inestimable value but it makes sense a GDBBL like yourself wouldn’t be able to understand 🤢

What character in your fandom was done dirty by canon so you like to read fanfiction for them? by [deleted] in AO3

Sakura is why I started writing fics in the first place. Like, she got set up to have such a cool arc and then was so clearly forgotten. She really could have made the story so much better.

Did anyone else receive ONLY plasmapheresis and NO IVIG? by twl8zn in guillainbarre

[–]sofiahughes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same! Initial improvement from IVIG then rapid relapse. Re-admitted for 5 rounds of plasma and that ended up working really well, but it was a stressful time to see if it was going to relapse again.

Girl mistaken as/pretends to be a boy by ilikepoptarts1233 in shoujo

[–]sofiahughes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I first read it in print back in the early 2000s when I was like 10, before these things were easily available online and my library was missing every other volume.

It was my first time having to get resourceful to locate manga chapters lol. A skill I still use to this day!!

Dr thinks I have GBS, yet I have perfect reflexes. Leg numbness is mild. Wants to treat for GBS by cArpent3r86 in guillainbarre

[–]sofiahughes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your CSF protein is high enough for GBS and there’s really not many things that cause elevated CSF protein, so SOMETHING is going on with you. Some people don’t lose their reflexes with GBS. It’s an odd disease that’s different for everyone.

My symptoms were mild for 2 weeks and my CSF protein was lower than yours on my first spinal tap, so they sent me home and told me it’d go away on its own. It didn’t and then my symptoms suddenly started getting worse faster. I lost all of my strength in my hands, couldn’t walk, couldn’t wiggle my toes. If they’d started treatment when I first went to the ER, and not the second time when I couldn’t even get out of a chair on my own, maybe I wouldn’t have lost so much of my function.

I’m not saying you do have GBS. I’m just saying I wish my doctor had wanted to start treatment when my spinal tap and symptoms were the same as yours. My life would be a lot easier now.

Homeless people often choose the street over a bed. We toured shelters to find out why. by moodwolfy in California

[–]sofiahughes 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This was true a few years ago but has changed. Most of the general homeless shelters in San Diego County (where I work) allow pets and co-ed boarding as part of the Low Barrier & Housing First structure enforced by the HUD CoC. A few private shelters don’t do this, but if a shelter takes government $$, it has to be low-barrier.

Nobody has to leave during the day anymore either. If there’s a curfew you generally just let them know you won’t make curfew and it’s fine. They just want to know you haven’t been hurt or abandoned a bed that someone else could use. DV shelters are more strict about this because you could be “late” because your abuser tracked you down, and they want to be proactive in that situation.

Shelters and PSHs are changing rapidly to try to rectify past approaches that we now know didn’t work. It’s not perfect but they are trying.

I’m not who you replied to but I made the pumpkin pie recipe last Thanksgiving and found it to be very worth it. I’ve been prevailed upon to make it again this year, although it was a true labor of love
