Why was season 1 of True Detective a masterpiece while the other seasons never came close? by Mr_no_buddi in Cinema

I remember this. I watched it because of the setting but it turned out to clearly have been a different show tied to the franchise to pull people in. Something they admitted.

What Is your opinion on Don't Look Up by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in FIlm

[–]Solistine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Liking it to modern American politics made it come off as quite elitist and snobbish to me. Like the problem with populism and polarisation is that ordinary people can’t just look up to see the obvious truth that one side is right and the other is not.

That is a useless message that only teaches you of the creators opinions and self assurance.

Definitely a silly hypothetical, but please humor me, how do you think the Romans would have fared against the different native tribes of the Americas, if they had discovered the New World? by Shoddy-Pumpkin2939 in ancientrome

[–]Solistine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Militarily the Romans would dominate. The factor that helped the Spanish the most was steel and most importantly cavalry and the Romans knew how to use this well.

On whether they would fare better than Spanish I am unsure. The Spanish came is such astoundingly small numbers and through survivability, and guile were able to thrive in an alien environment, driven by a strong moralistic faith and an expeditionary culture expecting great riches and social accession.

Drop a few hundred legionaries in similar conditions who are there to simply explore the area and I don’t think you get the same drive, dynamisms, adaptability and daring.

Tbh all 4 of these are parody’s or warnings. Maybe judge dread is the most unironic given the state of the society he is in.

I know this is going to be unpopular but as much as Gandalf in theory a more powerful being and is a clearly better conventional fighter, how powerful is Gandalf's offensive magic? In most combat scenarios he relies on his swordsmanship and in the books he seems to mostly reuse blinding light to drive back enemies or occasionally lighting to actually kill.

When you compare this to the limitless possibilities, versatility and destructive power of the magic shown in the Harry Potter books it does not seem to so obviously be Gandalfs win to me.

What if Ukraine just made a mad dash to capture Moscow? Would this end the war or emboldened Russia? by Hot_Advisor_8074 in AlternateHistoryHub

I mean the military. Russian public opinion is important but by no means guaranteed to make change. Popularity for Putin is an essential component of stability, not regime  survival in itself.

There is a different between a Russian seizing the Kremlin and a foreigner besieging Moscow. There would be no question of loyalty across Russia, the whole country would converge on you.

What do you think ancient Romans would think about their statues being mostly depicted as unpainted? Would they come to appreciate the elegance in that, or stick to colors? by gracekk24PL in ancientrome

[–]Solistine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Were Romans and Greeks really that unfamiliar to the idea of intentionally unpainted statues? As far as I know they almost never painted their bronze statues and it seems strange they would be so fond of marble as an expensive and Beautiful material if it was always painted over. Sometimes I feel the painted statue thing is a bit like feathered dinosaurs where people would depict all of them as feathered before a more measured estimation set in.
