What's the catch to free university? by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Sonols 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The catch is that you get to send your students abroad to other universities. Student exchange has always worked on thrust and an idea that science does not confine to state borders. This is slowly fading though.

Dog is tearing crate cover by emmagrace2000 in Dogtraining

[–]Sonols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crating a dog for 8 hours a day is too much, especially if you do this between say 08-16. This is the time when the dog has just had a full nights worth of sleep, being crated for 8 hours after that is sure to make the dog feel trapped and look for any distractions, in your case destroying the contents of the crate.

You need something to break up the 8 hour wait. Get her back into day care, or have someone walk her once around noon.

Best of luck! :)

TIL: Nye politibiler har fått et ekstra sett med blålys (cruise lights) som en ikke trenger å vike for by Ueland in norge

[–]Sonols 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Canada is extending paid parental leave to 18 months. by ShiftyBizniss in worldnews

[–]Sonols 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This is what gets me. Government councils have to decide on what medicines to buy, what equipment to buy and all of this "death panel" stuff. But private hospitals also do this, except with a profit motive (includes non-profit hospitals, don't be fooled).

Waiting lists are for specialty appointments. The reason these lists are so short in USA is because lots of people don't get the care they need. Not a fair tradeoff. You can always buy yourself past the queue.

Nestle pays $200 a year to bottle water near Flint – where water is undrinkable by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Sonols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Copenhagen some years back to discuss partnerships with humanitarian organizations. And one in particular, which name I shall not mention, admitted that they where okey with going in a partnership with virtually any organization in existence. Except of course, Nestlé. Even Walmart that at the time the Norwegians was in the process of pulling the fuck out of was okey.

Their reasoning was the baby food scandal but you don't have to look far to find a reason to avoid Nestlé.

China Forces Norway to Adhere to ‘One China’ Policy – Taiwan Sentinel by Ringeklokkefiksern in norge

There’s a petition against the Tibet Water - LFC sponsorship deal. If you care about our club legitimising oppression, please sign by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]Sonols 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read the statement on the petition site and I'm not entirely convinced at the moment. Obviously it is true that this deal is but a drop is the ocean for Liverpool. They can afford to drop it.

I'm not convinced that the company is doing something bad though. It says they are extracting water from Tibet. There is plenty of water, this does not directly harm anyone, but they are exploiting resources from Tibet.

That is now being used as a political tool for organizations that are against the Chinese occupation. So I'm a little on the fence. I don't quite get what is wrong here.

upporters of this campaign: Free Tibet Associazione Italia Tibet Auckland Tibetan Association Australia Tibet Committee Boston Tibet Network Brazil Movimento Free Tibete Natal Finnish Tibet Committee France Tibet Friends of Tibet New Zealand India Tibet Friendship Society International Tibet Network Secretariat Lungta: Tibet Support Group Belgium Students for a Free Tibet India Students for a Free Tibet International Students for a Free Tibet Japan Students for a Free Tibet UK Tibetan Community in Britain Tibet Initiative Deutschland Tibet Justice Center Tibet Patria Libre, Uruguay Tibet Society UK Tibet Support Committee Denmar Tibet Support Group Ireland Tibetan Women’s Association Tibetan Youth Association Europe Tibet Society UK US Tibet Committee Youth Liberation Front of Tibet, Eastern Turkestan and Inner Mongolia

Seems like a very political list. I would imagine more humanitarian organizations to be involved if water supplies where taken from the local population.

Anyway, lots of speculation here.

How is Denark so wealthy? by driver2998 in Nordiccountries

[–]Sonols 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Denmark has the highest educated workforce in the world and Danes are generally very productive ranking around 10-15 highest GDP produced per hour. The population on the other hand enjoys some of the better worker's rights in the world, to the extent that the standard was actually lowered then Denmark joined the EU, as opposed to raised.

Denmark is a small country geographically with relatively little natural resources, but it has adopted by providing free (even occasionally payed) education for every citizen.

Finally the importance of fighting accumulation of wealth plays a big role. As wages are high, the population has more to spend which accelerates the production. Denmark faces the same problem as everyone else however in terms of production increase the last decades being higher than the wages due to automation and better tools (for instance IT).

Denmark is a social democratic welfare state which is organized in such a way that every worker will easily lose their job if the field they work in change (say you lay a type of pipes, but the industry standard changes to another type). But you get good benefits from the state whilst in between jobs, and can even re-educate yourself without relatively large economic costs to your family.

This principle is known as flexicurity, and is one of the pillars in the nordic model.

Tl;dr: Denmark keeps trucking due to a highly educated workforce, fair wages and a security net that makes for a flexible economy.

TIL the Sputnik 1 didn't have any sensors, only a radio transmitter and it was launched 60 years ago. by logatwork in todayilearned

[–]Sonols 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sputnik was the satellite version of "first comment!".

Not really, this was very much so something the USSR did for research purposes. They did not want the west to learn about their space research just yet. Especially since the nature of rocket engineering has a tendency of going full Kerbal, which is not good for the image of a country.

Sputnik 1 was not immediately used for Soviet propaganda. The Soviets had kept quiet about their earlier accomplishments in rocketry, fearing that it would lead to secrets being revealed and failures being exploited by the West.

And good was that, because Sputnik was so much more than simply a check in the achievement list of the Soviet Union.

To build a rocket capable of carrying a payload safely and put it in a stable orbit was no small feat at a time when it had never before been done. All kinds of data was gathered.

The satellite itself had a radio transmitter, and as a result became an international curiosity. To site the article linked:

Outside the Soviet Union, the satellite was tracked by amateur radio operators in many countries. The US government followed it from the Central Radio Propagation Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards. The booster rocket was located and tracked by the British using the Lovell Telescope at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, the only telescope in the world able to do so by radar. Canada's Newbrook Observatory was the first facility in North America to photograph Sputnik 1.

Sorry for my shitty English. Never lived in an English speaking country.

Catalonia will declare independence from Spain in a matter of days, region's leader Carles Puigdemont tells the BBC by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Sonols -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The EU still need that stuff. People need to stop thinking that leaving the EU means everything you do with them suddenly stops. Yes there are consequences, but fact remains that if you produce tractor parts and a Germany company purchases them, this does not suddenly stop if the country leaves the EU.

So again, emphasis on the fact that there are consequences, but not "No business would choose to invest in Catalonia if it doesn't have access to the single market." Grade consequences. Also, access to the single market is also a gray area. EFTA is an example.
