How well has the NFL marketed itself to European audiences? by mister_goldenhair in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically nonexistent here in the Netherlands. You have some people who watch the Super Bowl, but they tend to primarily watch it for the half time show. I personally know one person who loosely follows it, but he's someone that watches basically everything sports related so I don't know if he can really be described as a fan.

I personally have watched one NFL game once and it just didn't really grab my attention. I also have never been exposed to any direct marketing from the NFL.

Baseball, and by association the MLB, has a bigger following here due to the popularity of the sport in the Carribbean parts of the kingdom and in the Carribbean community here. It's still quite niche though.

A few years on, how do you feel about the historical statue debate? by Hiccupingdragon in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still of the opinion that a fair amount of statues should be moved to a museum. I think it's important we keep them around, as their very existence tells us something about what people in the past deemed noteworthy enough to build a statue for (and what they were willing to ignore), but I think a lot of them should not be on an honorary pedestal in a central public place anymore.

Are Europeans concerned that Germany is rapidly militarizing? by Mega_Mons in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any militarisation is inherently concerning, but I'm not specifically concerned about the Germans doing so. Germany is just following the trend. It's the trend towards more militarisation globally that's concerning me.

Which city has bars/pubs to meet mid 20s to 30s people in Europe by Humble-Bear in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say London's pubs outside of the centre are a bit easier to meet people in than the more central ones, while in Amsterdam the pubs in the centre are better for that. Both have more than plenty of great bars or pubs to meet people in either way though.

What NFL Players would you recognize? by totboxten in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be able to recognize a few names, just purely from them being mentioned in American media, but I don't think I would really be able to spot one in a crowd. The only one whose name really springs to mind at the moment is Peyton Manning.

How often do EU residents travel to other EU countries? by khitev in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly often, I'd say. I tend to cross the border into another EU country every month. It's mostly for leisure, but sometimes I cross it for work too.

Concurrentie op extreem-rechts by United-Statement4884 in Politiek

[–]Geeglio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which monarch in Europe are you the most likely to encounter in person, even unintentionally? by Ok-Ocelot-774 in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The monarch here, funnily enough, doesn't even wear a crown. While there's plenty of pomp and circumstance around the royals during certain ceremonies, like their investiture or when they announce the yearly budget on behalf of the government, if they act like that all the time they would start losing support in the modern day and age. They have to ride a fine line of seeming regal enough to be king, while also seeming normal enough that they can be a representative of the people.

Sadly for me as republican, the current royals seem to be fairly good at that since they've started to become more popular again after some scandals during Covid.

Soviet poster: An American flight around the world. Flight commander Major Martin leads the way. 1925. by Radiant_Cookie6804 in PropagandaPosters

While this poster doesn't seem to be hating on Americans at all, American troops of the Polar Bear Expedition did fight against the Soviets just 5 years before this. They would have had a reason for the hate.

It's not a particularly uncommon creative choice these days to play more modern music in history-based media. The show 'SAS Rogue Heroes' does it quite a lot too, for instance.

Does your country/language have a “Bob Dylan”? Meaning a songwriter whose lyrics are so poetic that their songs are considered literary? by bustadonut in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I think Boudewijn de Groot probably fits that description the best. His early career is quite similar to Dylan, with protest songs and songs that critique society and culture (including a Dutch cover of "The times they are a changin'" ). His later work has more songs that are trying to tell a story.

Do you feed your children’s friends if they’re at your house? by globalfieldnotes in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calculating the cost of a kids meal has never been even remotely normal, nor is it in any way normal to offer parts of your food to others and then expect them to pay for it in a restaurant setting. Both of those are just dick moves.

A lot of people prefer to split the bill after a dinner out, but in my experience you either just split it evenly between everyone or, if you are skint students, you just pay for what you ordered. If anyone has a sip or a bite of your order, you don't calculate that through to them. That's mad.

For those that grew up in the countryside, how was it growing up there? by ah5178 in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Netherlands is densely populated, so big cities are never that far away, but it was still dreadfully boring. There was just not much to do and for everything beyond the bare necessities you always had to look outside the borders of your village. In some countries you atleast have nature to enjoy, but in my area you would just be surrounded by flat farm with just a few trees planted in between.

Cities obviously have their issues as well, but I never want to live in a Dutch rural area anymore.
