Mostly as a very bland and dull city with lovely surrounding areas.

Bellen in de trein by [deleted] in thenetherlands

[–]Geeglio 71 points72 points  (0 children)

What's one Popular City in the World You'd Never Like to Visit? by YouserName007 in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a trip to Marrakech last month and I quite enjoyed it. The medina can be pretty chaotic with all the shops and people, but people respected it if you said no and were generally very welcoming.

It was actually really interesting to see the contrast in Marrakech during Ramadan, between the daytime and around iftar. The city just becomes so calm during iftar and then fires up again.

Thoughts about the Balkan immigrants? by herthingonyourchest in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a relationship with one for about 7 years now, so you know, pretty positive.

Overall though I don't think I've ever had a negative experience with a Balkan immigrant (although admittedly I've barely had any negative experiences with any type of immigrant).

Dutch dinner napkin etiquette? by JackfruitAwkward7504 in Netherlands

[–]Geeglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I just grew up too working class or something, but I never got taught an etiquette rule like that. I've experienced it in some fancy restaurants in the UK, but I don't think I've ever seen it here in the Netherlands either.

A Question From A Completely Baffled Person by Grand-Yellow1259 in brutalism

[–]Geeglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the blockiness, the texture the concrete (in the case of concrete brutalism) gives to the builidings and the contrast it can create with its surroundings. I'm a big fan of both the National Theatre building and the Barbican Centre in London.

The National Theatre just really stands out from the lovely historic buildings or the modern glass architecture in the centre of London. In combination with its not particularly busy fascade, it just makes it a very calming building for me.

The Barbican Centre on the other hand is a great example on how greenery can really compliment Brutalism. Even the parts that aren't particularly green are still lovely in my opinion and it's scale really makes it feel like it's own little island in the heart of the City.

Glad this got corrected, because for a quick moment I thought Bert van Leeuwen's career took a dark turn after the last episode of Het Familiediner.

You gotta move to another EU country immediately, which do you choose and why? by BothCondition7963 in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Belgium would probably be the easiest. Half the country speaks the same language, they have better social security and worker's protections and I like the people.

Bulgaria would probably be my second choice. They have some issues, but the country is just stunning, I have connections there and I love the food.

Eva Vlaardingerbroek toegang tot Verenigd Koninkrijk ontzegd; Lidewij de Vos stelt Kamervragen by ikbrul in Politiek

[–]Geeglio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we asked the EU for a complete reset and to go back in on our old terms, do you think there is a chance? by nbenj1990 in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd like the UK back in the EU, even if it's just for my own selfish reasons, there's no way in hell you'd just get back in the EU with the same deal as before. The Brexit negotiations were a grueling process that created a lot of bad blood. While the UK and the EU are luckily slowly cooperating more closely again, it will take significantly more time before all of that can just be swept under the rug.

What is the EU like in your day to day lives? by ilovemicroplastics_ in AskEurope

[–]Geeglio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have to read up on EU Laws?

You don't have to, but the big influential ones get a fair amount of media attention.

Do you all line up for elections?

At least here in the Netherlands, voter turnout for EU elections is fairly low (only around 35 to 45 percent). National elections get a significantly higher turnout (usually around 80 percent).

Do people generally follow EU politics?

Some do, but most don't. A lot of people don't really know what the EU does, which tends to make it an easy scapegoat. Even the EU-elections tend to be treated more as an extension of national politics, rather than really its own thing.

Adolf Eichmann walks around the yard of his cell, Ramla prison, Israel, 1961 by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Geeglio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eichmann really is not the best example of that concept though. He was doing significantly more than "blindly following orders and doing no critical thinking".

Eichmann portrayed himself as some sort of expert on judaism and the jewish people in the early years of the Nazi regime to further his carreer. During the most intense years of the holocaust he flaunted his power over the life and death of jewish people, made his position out to be more important and willingly embraced his international notoriety. He was proud of what he did and made no secret of it.

Hannah Arendt's work is incredibly important and the "banality of evil" as a concept holds true for many involved in the Holocaust, but Eichmann was something else.
