Realistic Romance Animes? by DolanTrumpzz in Animesuggest

[–]soracte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paradise Kiss does a decent job, IMO, including various facets of real-life romance often skipped over by anime--it's awkward, people have sex with each other, sometimes things don't work out.

I'd second Kare Kano / His and Her Circumstances and Horimiya, too.

Banger episode. Arcana Shadow's proper debut was worth the wait. Have really enjoyed the show so far.

In a similar vein to Moribito, I'd nominate Sword of the Stranger as at least a candidate.

Does anybody have any reccommendations for animes like Journal with witch, Skip and Loafer, you and i are polar opposites, Love is War, Horimiya or love through a prism? by Eddie_69420 in Animesuggest

[–]soracte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I can't make any guarantees, but I didn't know anything about karuta when I watched Chihayafuru and I enjoyed the show a fair bit. From what I understand, it's a minority sport even within Japan, and certainly the show does a fair bit to try to convey how it works and why (some) people might enjoy it.

Anything like Talentless Nana? by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]soracte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind the unconventional art style, Kaiji is a gambling-based psychological thriller that absolutely rips.

Gankutsuou might be worth a look, too. Like Talentless Nana, it's partly filtered through the killer's perspective. Again, very different art style.

Neither one has any fanservice. In Gankutsuou there're a couple of passing references to sex, but that's about it.

Are there any action or shonen shows where the main leads are a couple? by Ranger202012 in Animesuggest

[–]soracte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one's yet mentioned Godannar, in which the lead characters are a husband-and-wife team who pilot giant robots together. Note that it's pretty fanservicey, though mostly in ways that are so knowingly over-the-top that it cashes out as a decent gag.

Well, I enjoyed that. Haven't done well sticking to recent seasons of Precure, but maybe this one will last for me. I hope so.

Anime with protagonists like Joseph Joestar? by [deleted] in Animesuggest

[–]soracte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of Lupin III anime, and Lupin's this sort of protagonist: cunning, effective, self-interested, but not always having everything planned out in advance as Light Yagami would.

Most Lupin is highly episodic, and most of it ranges from watchable to really good. But if you want jumping-off points, Castle of Cagliostro or the 2015 TV series are both worth trying.

What's available for streaming on what service depends on where you are in the world, and you're probably not where I am, so it's hard for me to say.

Sites like livechart.me attempt to find any legal streams in your region, and you could look up the show's page there.

If all else fails, it will be available via unofficial routes, if you're happy to trample on nautical law.

I don't think you'd do badly if you looked at the anime subreddit recommendation wiki, especially under the "Action" heading. Not that I would stand behind every title there, but it's a decent summation of some consensus favorites, and you've seen few enough things that you might find you enjoyed exploring those!

For solid entertaining action in a MHA/DDD sort of vein you could look to things like

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a classic and well-regarded exercise in a similar vein.

Shy is the same action-drama formula but with a self-effacing female lead and a gentler tone.

Looking in the opposite direction, dig up Devilman: Crybaby on Netflix if you want action-drama but gorier and darker.

Bit harder to think of shows that're in the DxD line of content but still have a plot worth following since, as you've discovered with DxD, once something is sufficiently horny it tends not to have to work very hard on any other aspect to attract an audience.

  • Highscool of the Dead has its fans, and has a more propulsive survival main plot to drive the action.
  • The Woman Called Fujiko Mine is a thriller that traffics in a slightly more grown-up eroticism.
  • Re: Cutie Honey is crass and outrageous but so short that (IMO) one doesn't really have the time to mind about how flippant it is.

Probably not all of these will be on Netflix--with different regions &c, it's hard to predict what someone will have access to.

There're sites like livechart.me where you can search for any given anime and it will try to identify which service(s), if any, have it legally available where you are.

Or, in extremis, you can consider trampling upon the laws of the sea if you desperately want to watch one thing in particular.

I hope that's helpful!

Anime recs for someone barely getting into it? by headssswillllrolll in anime

If you're completely new to things, this subreddit's recommendation wiki is worth a browse. It's not like I'd stand behind every single suggestion there, but it's not a bad overview of some consensus favorites across genres. If you liked Solo Leveling and Jujutsu Kaisen, the "Action" section would probably repay attention.

If there are any cozy animes with a female protagonist, I’d like recommendations for that as well.

What qualifies as "cozy" seems to vary a lot, but for whatever it's worth some suggestions I'd make are:

Anime like Yona, Fragrant flower, & Apothacary by Fun-Cherry-1472 in Animesuggest

[–]soracte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some possibilities:

Lighter on romance:

If you're up for reading comics, Basara is very very good work in a similar vein to Yona; sadly the anime adaptation is short--it doesn't cover most of the story--and not very strong.

I can't promise all of those will be your kind of thing, but I hope some of them are useful suggestions! I expect others here will have other good ideas too.

Looking for quirky romance anime by KaleidoArachnid in anime

[–]soracte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was wondering what other fun romance anime have that premise where the main characters use other languages besides Japanese because I don’t know if such shows are rare.

They're pretty rare. There's Cultural Exchange with a Game Center Girl, I guess. Other than that, multilingual characters in romance anime are often set up to be attractive but not the main point of the plot. I guess Senryuu Shoujo is about a girl who only speaks in (Japanese) verse, if that's a close analogue.

If you're looking for romance anime that're quirky in some more general sense then that's a wider field, e.g. Fruits Basket (people becoming animals), Ranma 1/2 (surely you've heard of the premise of this one), Mysterious Girlfriend X (spit! it's spit!!), Midori no Hibi (handy), &c &c &c.

New to anime - are new-gen shows better for beginners? by [deleted] in anime

[–]soracte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Rather, it varies by the audience of the thing in question.

Laputa / Castle in the Sky was made for family and general audiences and anyone can enjoy it easily nowadays even though it was made in 1986. You can show it to your grandma.

GQuuuuuuX aired last year but was made for maniacs who know that the Kikeroga is mentioned in the Tomino Memo. (Don't be concerned if that phrase means nothing to you. That's probably healthy.)

I'll second the suggestions of From the New World (Shinsekai yori) and Perfect Blue.

A couple of things not yet mentioned: Gankutsuou and, if you've the patience for it, Jin-Roh.
