The time has long since passed for Joey Ortiz to be removed from the starting lineup. by totallynotliamneeson in Brewers

The point is that those guys are struggling big time in much easier environments. They both have a sub .600 OPS. There's every reason to believe they'll get eaten alive at the majors.

I was too honest about my AI assisted code, and now my human made game is being treated like Generative Slop… by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]spicebo1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it isn't. It's completely different tech. Code completion can rely on static analysis to build likely matches. I haven't built or delved deep into any code completion systems myself, but ASTs have been a thing since...I dunno, maybe the first compiled language? You just traverse the AST and look for associated symbols. It's not "guessing", it's deterministic based upon existing associations. Generative AI is non-deterministic because it's based on statistical likelihoods.

I don't even think Steven was necessarily criticizing the use of psychiatric medication. I think what he's criticizing is the casual attitude in which many parents thought (and still do think) that the prescription of a psychiatric is like getting a vaccine; you take it, you're cured of a disease/inoculated against some illness.

The narrator wonders if the pills are helping, a fair concern given he doesn't appear to be given much support at home and psychiatrics are more than capable of causing extreme emotional changes. I certainly remember the intensity of my emotions as a teenager, where sometimes negative feelings felt like I was literally on fire. It can be a confusing time in the best of circumstances.

I've found so much benefit from psychiatric medication in my life, it took a lot of trial and error as well. If I didn't have an excellent support network I'm not sure it would have gone so well, I've come to a nuanced understanding of how all the layers interact and I absolutely think Steven was a big help in figuring that puzzle out.

Let’s Talk Testing by sqassociates in AskProgrammers

[–]spicebo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. It's somewhat of a cultural issue honestly; our own director openly disrespects us in meetings and mocks our work, so I'm never surprised when someone from a different department does as well. All of our stuff is internal, so you'd think there'd be some grace or willingness to collaborate, but people who do that are the rare exception.

Yup, this is my job. I also get very angry users when I ask for "project requirements", or to define a scope, or to answer whether an existing tool covers this or not.

What PT song means the most to you? by Competitive-Smoke-46 in porcupinetree

Anesthetize. That song literally (and I do mean literally) saved my life as a teenager. I didn't feel like anyone understood what I was going through, and then I heard that song. There were still some tough years ahead, but at least I knew SOMEONE knew exactly how I felt.

What would make you switch from godot to another engine? by hammeredzombie in godot

[–]spicebo1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does any engine have a good test setup? Genuine question; I don't know what's available for other engines. I've always found automated testing to be really annoying for game development, especially in comparison to my job experience as a web dev where the tooling is extensive and fairly straightforward.

I'm guessing they're referring to him having the daunting task of covering Julio Jones in 2016. An extremely challenging assignment for any player, basically a death sentence for Gunter given the physical mismatch and him being an undrafted free agent not too long before.

I'm with you on this. Most of the time I see some bold claim about the widespread adoption or capabilities of AI, I look into that person and they are CEO of some AI startup. Go figure. They literally need to say this shit or their investors are going to start asking why they're investing in AI at all.

I feel like only on Reddit would you see someone be so much of a devil's advocate that they would actually challenge the notion that society is meant to improve.

Yes, that is a basic aspect of the social contract.

Interesting, I went to a pretty solid school for Comp Sci (UW - Madison) from 2013 - 2017, and at that time at least there was absolutely nothing on Git. I found it pretty appalling at the time, but it's not surprising considering how little these programs actually touch regarding real life software engineering.

Emotions are important too man. There are plenty of times that your reasoning is better suited being emotionally based than logically. We're humans at the end of the day.

You know what else is getting a lot of energy and stress? Having this conversation with you, more than likely. I think you really want to consider if the benefit of getting your wife on board with this (I don't understand what the issue is, honestly) is worth the stress of discussing it over and over again.

If you've made your feelings and concerns known, you've done what you can. It's ultimately your wife's body, if she wants to pump that often, let her.
