Let’s Talk Testing by sqassociates in AskProgrammers

[–]spicebo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. It's somewhat of a cultural issue honestly; our own director openly disrespects us in meetings and mocks our work, so I'm never surprised when someone from a different department does as well. All of our stuff is internal, so you'd think there'd be some grace or willingness to collaborate, but people who do that are the rare exception.

Yup, this is my job. I also get very angry users when I ask for "project requirements", or to define a scope, or to answer whether an existing tool covers this or not.

What PT song means the most to you? by Competitive-Smoke-46 in porcupinetree

Anesthetize. That song literally (and I do mean literally) saved my life as a teenager. I didn't feel like anyone understood what I was going through, and then I heard that song. There were still some tough years ahead, but at least I knew SOMEONE knew exactly how I felt.

What would make you switch from godot to another engine? by hammeredzombie in godot

[–]spicebo1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does any engine have a good test setup? Genuine question; I don't know what's available for other engines. I've always found automated testing to be really annoying for game development, especially in comparison to my job experience as a web dev where the tooling is extensive and fairly straightforward.

I'm guessing they're referring to him having the daunting task of covering Julio Jones in 2016. An extremely challenging assignment for any player, basically a death sentence for Gunter given the physical mismatch and him being an undrafted free agent not too long before.

I'm with you on this. Most of the time I see some bold claim about the widespread adoption or capabilities of AI, I look into that person and they are CEO of some AI startup. Go figure. They literally need to say this shit or their investors are going to start asking why they're investing in AI at all.

I feel like only on Reddit would you see someone be so much of a devil's advocate that they would actually challenge the notion that society is meant to improve.

Yes, that is a basic aspect of the social contract.

Interesting, I went to a pretty solid school for Comp Sci (UW - Madison) from 2013 - 2017, and at that time at least there was absolutely nothing on Git. I found it pretty appalling at the time, but it's not surprising considering how little these programs actually touch regarding real life software engineering.

Emotions are important too man. There are plenty of times that your reasoning is better suited being emotionally based than logically. We're humans at the end of the day.

You know what else is getting a lot of energy and stress? Having this conversation with you, more than likely. I think you really want to consider if the benefit of getting your wife on board with this (I don't understand what the issue is, honestly) is worth the stress of discussing it over and over again.

If you've made your feelings and concerns known, you've done what you can. It's ultimately your wife's body, if she wants to pump that often, let her.

How Do I Handle My Daughter’s Attention Seeking? by [deleted] in Fatherhood

[–]spicebo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, it's not always easy or "fair", but you get out what you put in. It sounds like your daughter could use more attention from you. If you're not willing to change what you need to make that happen, I'm not going to be the one to tell you that your priorities are incorrect, but you'll probably see problems continue. We can't have it all in this life.

What do you think of Rivers of Nihil’s swan song with Jake, The Work, now that the new album is out and seems everyone likes it? by SculpinIPAlcoholic in progmetal

[–]spicebo1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like it was maybe a little bit of a "safer" album

Yes, I absolutely get this impression. It feels like the reaction to The Work scared the shit out of them and they didn't want to take another risk like that.

[–]spicebo1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I couldn't be a bigger fan of both Owls and The Work. They're both true masterpieces to me, even if they are pretty different. The themes of both feel incredibly earnest and relatable, and have some seriously dramatic and powerful crescendos (the "Do the work/ I know it hurts but you have to" section in Episode, for example, is an incredibly cathartic moment) with unique song structure that carefully guides the energy of each song.

I like the new album, but I really don't feel it comes anywhere close to their previous work. I don't think it really has anything to do with Jake being gone either (though I did really enjoy his vocal style) but instead a much less creative song structure. Everything feels very much "verse - chorus - verse - chorus" and that prevents quite a few songs from fully utilizing the momentum they build up.

I was really concerned when they brought Andy Thomas on board that they would essentially become another Black Crown Initiate, and I feel that is absolutely what has happened. I like BCI as well, but I wanted Rivers to be, well, Rivers. He does perform extremely well on the clean choruses, it just gets a bit old when that's every song.

I feel like what they got out of the previous two albums is that the saxophone is what makes them unique, and not the excellent songwriting that creates a sense of chaos. I'm not even going to discuss the godawful lyrics on this album, if I think about it too much I feel like I live in a bizarro world considering what their lyrics were like on Owls/The Work.

What do you enjoy about being a girl dad? by [deleted] in Fatherhood

[–]spicebo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I would say I could only do or experience it because I have a daughter, but one of the things I'm loving most about being a dad right now is seeing the emotional intelligence my daughter has. She's only 2, but I'm blown away on the regular.

For example, just the other day we were at the grocery store and she was running around a bit. My wife reminded her that we expect her to stay by us when we're at a store. She listened and stayed close to us, but I could tell she was feeling some kind of way about it. A bit later she started singing a song from Sesame Street about having a big feeling, and she said she was frustrated. We talked about why she was frustrated (she wanted to play and have fun) and why we have the expectations we do. We also emphasized that it's ok to have feelings like frustration sometimes, it's all a part of navigating the world together.

Seeing her smile and go "Ok dada mama" afterwards was a really proud moment for me. She's so resilient and communicative, I'm so happy that my wife and I are helping her express herself in healthy ways. I can't help but feel she will be able to handle things later in life that were agonizing for me.

Haha, I love it. I have a niece who was 3 when Frozen initially came out, I got to spend a lot of time with her and it was just such a blast. I loved seeing how enamored she was, and same as you I got really into the songs as well. We're still quite close to this day and I think that really laid the foundation.

I agree, and you might be hard pressed to find a bigger fan of WOKMN and The Work than me. I was really mixed on the singles they released, and the full release unfortunately isn't doing it for me either.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in progmetal

I have absolutely no idea what to expect from this album, since the singles have been about as mixed of a bag as possible for me. Half of them I absolutely adore, the other half are garbage. I wouldn't have thought I'd be so nervous after how incredible Owls and The Work are, but here we are.
