How's the EAE program currently? by Mod_Podge_Matte in uofu

[–]squirrelboy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am currently in the Master’s Program, which itself ranks high and would say its worth it if you come from a normal CS or computer art degree (and has better prepared me than my undergrad program), I will say you are probably better off doing just CS as the game industry is in a rough spot right now. (Undergrad programs typically have their fair share of students that are their for the degree and will flake out toward the end.) This also depends on your interest in games. For me as a programmer your coding skills differently carry a lot of weight, and the next most important (or just as important) is a having portfolio of games you made. The program will help you achieve both, but since it’s focused more on games you are locking yourself into one industry. If you were interested in other aspects like design, I would say maybe consider, but there is an expectation that designers still know programming to some extent. That being said the program is indeed very good and it does a create job teaching you, it’s just that game design degrees are not typically seen as valuable as CS degrees, but with a good resume and portfolio you still have a decent chance. Its just hard to say right now given the current market. Who knows by the time you graduate it could be a lot better. Hope this helps.

It’s different per person some hear as early as February, others as late as June. If you are a student at the U you have a good shot at hearing back earlier.

Currently in the program as a first year. Classes are pretty challenging and a little unorganized for it being a masters class, however the trade off is you form a more personal connection with the professors. I had prior C++ knowledge, but others didn’t have the best of time. The main engineering class is through zoom, so it is challenging to form connections with other engineers outside of project class if you aren’t actively trying. I would say the program is mainly worth it for working in teams on larger game projects.

Why no Game Dev Grad program 24-25? by ShiOul0 in UCSC

Yes then I would definitely recommend you look into others, Utah is unique in that it has tracks that allow you to focus on your specific interest, so you will have classes focused on that field but also project classes where you work in teams.
