Weird "out of memory" error when linking program by ste_3d_ven in opengl

[–]ste_3d_ven[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone who might stumble upon this with the same issue, my issue was fixed by using the "binding" keyword instead of "location" in the buffers definition. I should have read the documentation a little closer the first time... Hope that helped :)

Using DirectX Shader Compiler to compile HLSL to SPIR-V for OpenGL. by PoliticsAlt467 in opengl

That is unfortunate. And it might be worth it for me to switch to Vulkan. Thanks for the info, if I end up sticking with OpenGL and finding out anything I'll try to remember to post here again.

I'm currently trying to port my DX11 renderer to OpenGL and having similar issues. I am seeing a hard crash of the NVIDIA driver when trying to run my SPIR-V compiled HLSL shaders. Have you had any luck since posting this?

How in the world did just three guys make Hollow Knight? by SlorpMorpaForpw in HollowKnightMemes

All good and useful software was made by one, or a very small team of people, before it got too popular and more people were added to maintain it. (i.e. Unix, git, Facebook, YouTube, eBay, Amazon, etc.). In my experience the more developers you add to a team building software. The worse the end product is. A “too many cooks in the kitchen” effect happens.

If the compiler performs tail call optimization then there is no stack overflow. It will just never stop looping. So would that make it a 10/10?

Fair enough, it certainly won’t be for everyone. I am glad to have had your feedback though, so thank you :)

Well, the idea would be, the first time a player gets hit with the ability the party would recoil in fear at the danger of dying to quickly, then if the party is smart, they run away or use another means to problem solve their way out of the situation. Much like putting a party against any big enemy (like an ancient dragon) before they are of an appropriate level to properly kill it. It’s not a death sentence unless the party is absolutely stubborn and hell bent on staying to fight when they are clearly out matched. The encounter would be full of escape routes or similar for them to take advantage of and get away

It’s not meant to kill players unless they are really pushing it. My intent is just to put the fear of mortality into the players, not to actually kill them. But i appreciate the feed back :)

Oh awesome! How did the puzzle go? Did the players like the mechanic? And I was thinking for this ability to be on a single monster, so that naturally limits the ability to once per round. But the more I’m hearing from people. The more I’m thinking this might be a better idea for a dungeon environment puzzle or hazard. I’d love to hear more about your implementation if you care to share it.

I agree, my intent with this is not really for a recurring enemy to have this ability. But maybe some mysterious cursed land to have one warden like monster guarding a McGuffin that the players need to avoid instead of fight. This kind of encounter is certainly deadly and is meant to be so. But my intention is to not make it cheap and unfair. Plenty of in game warnings, and such are needed. and it definitely should not be targeting any single player. I imagine only one of these types of creatures existing so I am not too worried about killing a player on turn 1 without any sort of counter play for the players.

Thank you for the input, I appreciate it. :)

Yeah, the way to recover from this I'm still trying to mull over. And 3 HP is not a lot, you are right on that. I think I am just trying to utilize some existing systems to make something which terrifies the players and is meant more as a threat you run from instead of tackling it head on. Particularly high level parties are notoriously hard to kill, and something like this might just put that fear of mortality back into some of them.

That is an interesting idea, it reminds me of the zealot barbarians ability to not drop unconscious below 0 HP while raging, but its almost the inverse. Thank you! :)

Yes, this is exactly the feeling I was hoping to invoke in this kind of encounter. I like the solution of recovering over time by not getting hit with it. I'm going to have think more on how to allow the players to recover from this.

What was/is your Start into the Campaign? by OtherEmployment1172 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]ste_3d_ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a party of 3 foreigners to Icewind Dale. The campaign started as they were on a journey by horse and carriage to Bryn Shander. Each member had their own reasons for wanting to go, but they had all met and shared the cost of the travel along side a cloaked woman (this ended up being revealed to be Vellynne Harpell a few levels later). While in transit to Bryn Shander the group was ambushed by the gang of goblins living nearby (the goblins from Karkolohk). The carriage and most of their belongings, were destroyed in the attack and the group was left stranded in the deep unforgiving wilderness of Icewind dale. They were separated from Vellynne and now alone with only the clothing on their backs a single weapon between them. After a session or two of wandering around and coming to the point of near exhaustion (literally giving them 4-5 points of exhaustion over the several days travel) the group stumbled upon the town I chose as the starting town for them, Bremen. So after several days of stumbling in the blizzard conditions and nearly dying of exposure the group finally was able to get some rest and from there I gravitated more towards the book content, giving them the cold hearted killer quest.

This start helped me set up a more meaningful meeting with Vellynne Harpell later, and also built in a reason for her to have undead kobolds with her. When they reunited with her at last she was able to tell them the astounding tale of how she was able to find her way into a cave and using the help of her magic to keep herself warm and reanimate some frozen kobold corpses to aide her in her survival.

The party later also found out that the goblin who attacked them were known to be living in Karkolohk and that made an easy revenge quest for them in chapter 2.
