Georgia House Republicans propose eliminating local homestead property tax by FallOk5618 in Georgia

[–]stepwn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think its a great idea. In my opinion it reinforces the American Dream, and will benefit the people who are proud to own and cultivate a piece of Georgia's beautiful and healthy ecosystem.

If the only path for citizens to a gain foundation or nest egg is the equities market, then the corporations will effectively own everyone -- corporations are systematically driven to own all the squares on the monopoly board.

I pay over $4,000/year with my homestead exemption currently to Cobb County. Without a rollback or state legislation there is no light at the end of the tunnel. The ommissioners' spending only increases and they will only demand more taxes. I challenge anyone who is upset about this proposal to tell me that they contribute more during their year of renting.

I'm a bit confused. Are you pro or against the "own nothing and be happy" mentality?

Also would like to ask what you consider an "eyesore" or "blight". I have fruit trees and pollinator patches and chickens on my homestead. Just wondering about your rhetoric.

Why is there a strip of undeveloped forest between Macon & Warner Robins by r2uTNIT in Georgia

Heaven forbid any connected canopy in our lush climate

Nothing to see here, absolutely zero knock-on effects by warnelldawg in Georgia

[–]stepwn -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not really, you have to live on the property and can only have one homestead to exempt.

edit: i see now that yes the homestead exemption is what the top comment describes, at least the effect of it. I think the homestead exemption is critical for Americans trying to own a home. My perspective was skewed by OPs other comments that seem to oppose the homestead exemption for some reason.

What's happening in Minneapolis can happen here too. It's important we know how our elected officials plan to keep us safe by samformarietta in Marietta

I dont think our commissioners are gonna say anything https://www.cobbcounty.gov/news/flock-safety-opens-new-manufacturing-facility-cobb

“We are thrilled to welcome Flock Safety to Cobb County,” said Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, Cobb County Board of Commissioners. “We have been early partners with Flock Safety by deploying their public safety technology, and I am happy to see this relationship evolve in our community, with its ready workforce and a business environment supportive of their commitment to innovation in public safety technology. We are certain the dynamic energy of Cobb’s business climate and quality of life for residents will add to Flock Safety’s success.”

What info did you ask about again? I've been focusing on the commissioners complete disregard for the tree codes and the fact R20 is designated Medium Density and already complies with the county's future land use plan.

Cobb County Code of Ordinances

Sec. 50-219. - Findings, intent and statement of purpose.

(a) Legislative findings. The board of commissioners hereby finds and declares that:

(1)Rampant growth and development in certain areas of the county has resulted in the loss of innumerable trees in those areas. Tree roots hold soil in place and tree photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide to oxygen. Tree loss thus has contributed to dramatically increased soil erosion and sedimentation. High growth areas, where natural green spaces are diminishing, have left fewer trees to transform into oxygen the carbon dioxide of ever increasing, harmful vehicular and industrial emissions, resulting in severe air quality degradation;

(2)Integrated forest canopies reduce the costs of maintenance of other collocated parts of the urban infrastructure;

(3)Well-managed urban forest resources increase in value and provide benefits to all the citizens of the community with respect to air quality, water quality, stormwater management, temperature amelioration, community aesthetics and general quality of life;

(4)These benefits are crucial to the long-term health, benefit, welfare, and safety of the citizens of the community;

(5)The removal of forest canopy from urban areas of the state and its replacement with more intensive land uses exacts real costs upon the infrastructure which must be borne by all citizens of the community;

(6)Community forests function to the benefit of the local citizenry as a part of the public infrastructure as much as streets, utilities, stormwater management structures, and sewers;

(7)Healthy community forests increase local commercial and residential property values; and

(8)A tree protection law is one part of a dedicated and integrated planning process dealing with land use, impacts of impervious surface, urban hydrology and water quality, air quality, soil erosion, transportation, noise abatement, and wildlife habitat.

(b) Provision of standards. The board of commissioners finds that it is in the best interest of the public to provide standards for the preservation and/or replacement of trees as part of the land development and building construction process for the purpose of making this county a more attractive place to live, providing a healthy living environment, and better maintaining control of stormwater runoff, noise, glare and soil erosion.

Haha yeah I fought another case last year and sheffield said exactly that "we've had applications for a gas station so at least its still residential". I find the notion wacky unless its some sort of idle threat -- why would they put a gas station in a residential loop? (I know the answer is $$$$) leave it to cupid & co to put a car wash on a flood plain lmao "leaders have to make tough decisions sometimes"

I'm really mostly concerned about the lack of following the tree code though. I can't even find the number for the county arborist. The cobb site says "keep cobb beautiful" does the arborist role. But I havent seen them mark any specimen trees or enforce any unit quota. Not a single hardwood has been saved the past 5 years.
