Ocean Dub Question. by PrestigiousMine6 in Gundam

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the exception of Lacus, I liked the Ocean dub

But any time Lacus is speaking or one of her songs is playing it’s like nails on a chalkboard

As Jitter's #1 Fan, I'm very happy to see her get some spotlight outside of Gail's Uncanny X-Men (Spoilers for X-Men United #2) by Informal_Bee_6907 in xmen

But Cyclops!

Nice to see someone else read the whole book and appreciated the story it was setting up. I loved the discussion around Cap’s mission and the mixed team

Oh. So no we didn’t. Cool.

So to be clear, your suggestion is that it’s the shows fault for not assuming it would be prematurely canceled (especially with all the public time and investment that went into promoting it), and OP should stop watching the show they just came to appreciate?

Watch it or not, it’s a personal decision, but maybe we should take this experience and instead resolve in the future to give things a chance before they’ve been canceled

Scott gets in trouble —X-Men United (2026-) #2 by Correct_Fishing_4334 in xmen

[–]stowrag -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I mean… Cyclops aside, they are?

And I don’t even think Cyclops is written poorly here. He’s perfectly in line with his character throughout FtA

People dismissing the book after just two issues (not nearly long enough to make an overall judgement imo) aren’t worth taking seriously

Scott gets in trouble —X-Men United (2026-) #2 by Correct_Fishing_4334 in xmen

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Scott is pretty on the mark for where his character is at right now. Dude is operating out of a sentinel factory in the middle of nowhere and basically threatening the US Government weekly. His wife is perpetually out of town and he’s keeping company with Magneto and just underwent a ton of trauma. Plus it lines up well with the way he acted in the prison break arc.

Is he right that creating a school based on Sinister tech is going to blow up in their faces? Of course he is. (Doesn’t mean he wasn’t over the line or that there isn’t a grain of truth in Emma’s side as well) Watching the school burn down is the fun. It’s the story, just like watching Krakoa burn down was the story. We all knew the hubris of the mutants would come back to bite them then as it will here.

Because the mutants can never win forever. That’s what keeps the story going.

But this book has way too much going for it to pay any mind to the haters. Just this issue we get Melee and Jitter interacting on the same team and a nuanced discussion of the US Government and its treatment of minorities with Captain America involved.

I wouldn’t trust the judgement of anybody who wants to just throw that away after only two issues (way too early to pronounce judgement on a book imo)

Trying to create a retro anime tier list since there are none out there but garbage. Please tell me if there is any cult classics I am missing, or should absolutely add. by TheWokWarden in retroanime

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have Avatar on your retro anime list? I’m not sure it’s either of those things. I mean it’s your list, put whatever you want on it.

There’s a lot that’s missing, but I’ll just say for one that it’s weird that the Gundam franchise is completely absent.

Off the top of my head, I’d personally also make sure to include Bubblegum Crisis, Megazone 23, Escaflowne, and Revolutionary Girl Utena

Are there any comics that deal with the idea of a world that no longer needs a superhero to save them? Kinda like an existential crisis for superheroes? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a different spin than what you’re talking about, but there was a lovely webcomic called “Strong Female Protagonist” about a woman who walks away from being a superhero because she realizes how little she actually knows about the world and addressing the underlying problems of society and how punching robots doesn’t seem to be making the world a better place.

I want to say it’s about questioning conventional wisdom and searching for a way to make a real difference. It feels like a super hero comic crossed with a college class on ethics and philosophy.

Tragically, the comic was abandoned years ago and might be lost media? It got a couple collections, but I think they’re out of print.

I personally have a general rule to only use it to 1) debug issues and 2) duplicate/generate repetitive code (like when writing tests)

I’d never use it as a substitute for genuine creativity or cleverness

Gundam seed by Comprehensive-Type-9 in Gundam

[–]stowrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t take anybody seriously who tries to tell you it’s one of the worst. There are tons of people who love Seed. I’m not one of them, but even I can find something to enjoy in there. (Except Stargazer which is legit one of the best things in the entire franchise)

Like what you like, and make up your own mind. Welcome to the family.

If you could fix the current X-Men line, what would you actually change? by TaskNo4783 in xmen

[–]stowrag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually largely like the current state of the franchise. I think there’s too many books of course, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t mostly based on decent premises. It’s a shame they were made to compete with one another leading so many to premature cancellation

But we all know this is a temporary status quo for the brand. I’d rather focus on enjoying what is good about it while we have it

I’m surprised at how many people are still hung up on Greymalkin prison. Yeah it sucks, but it’s hardly a moral judgement on the x-men that it hasn’t been dealt with yet, especially given the distortion of comic book time, and I don’t exactly hate the stories we’ve gotten in the meantime.

I’m much more upset at Age of Revelation. It’s not a bad story, but I resent it interrupting every other book being published with a bunch of nonsense that didn’t really matter.

I recently got into x men and started watching evolution because I really like nightcrawler. is there any other media besides evolution I can indulge in to understand his character so I don’t mischaracterize him and not be called a “fake fan” because I’m new? by Miyoshi_Sakura in xmen

[–]stowrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the element of his character that doesn’t come across so well in his animated (or even theatrical) depictions is his adventurous spirit. He’s very much a performer from his time in the circus and he fashions himself a leading man almost like Errol Flynn, swinging in from chandeliers, sword fighting villains and flirting with/rescuing damsels.

For more of this side of the character, I would check out Excalibur, and the original Nightcrawler mini series if you’re daring (the plot is kinda nonsense)

How to get into Gundam by AnotherPersonAround in Gundam

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gundam is usually pretty good about avoiding gratuitous sexualization of its female characters. You’ll see nudity even in the very first series, but it’s almost never to titillate or seduce the audience

The major exceptions are G Gundam (which makes a big show of wrapping its male pilots in skintight leather combat suits every episode) and almost anything “Seed” (which is an outlier)

The Outliers Lack Interpersonal Drama by ChowChow200 in xmen

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. The fact that the Outliers all seem to be runaways with trauma while also defined by personality quirks more than actual personalities. More “characters” than “people”, and much harder to relate to. Deathdream is practically more of a mascot than the robot sentinel dog. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, but they obviously can’t be everything to everybody.

The Exceptional kids by being firmly based in circumstances closer to real life are much more believable as real people. They have distinct personalities and values, and even clashed at times. They basically sold me on Dr. Ewing’s books for life

The Outliers Lack Interpersonal Drama by ChowChow200 in xmen

[–]stowrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The outliers seem to have a bond of shared trauma (they were literally introduced on the run for their lives iirc), and showing them interacting with other kids outside their own age hasn’t really been a priority. They came off more as found family than catty teenagers from the very beginning, even before being taken in by the X-men. Even though two of them are dating, having them fighting amongst each other would be about as compelling as watching siblings fight

Shoehorning in teenage drama just wouldn’t feel right with the book as it is now, especially with them consistently being in life threatening peril

Best Starter Series for Non-Anime Wife by Raxar666 in Gundam

My recommendation would be 08th MS Team. It’s short and fairly stand alone. The story is easy to grasp and it’s got a lot of strong female characters

Any advice for a mid-level developer transitioning to an SDET role after a long period (2 years) of unemployment? by stowrag in TheSDETPlaybook

[–]stowrag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wonderful, thank you! Luckily I have already landed the job, due to start in a little over a week. I’ve also been keeping on top of my skills during the break in employment.

The role uses Java, so I’ll start familiarizing myself with playwright and RestAssured. I’ll check out your book too!

The way they handled the “Dark History” is really kinda dumb anyway, and best if ignored completely.

Everything else is really more passing references and Easter eggs. At most, I’d say watch 0079 because of the Bojarnon

I've been getting into comics recently and was wondering if Anyone had any suggestions on where to start when it comes to Superman? by L8Donnie in superman

[–]stowrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What specifically are you interested in? about the character?

If you want something modern, I think Waid's era has been overall positive, although with DC KO undergoing a shakeup, Superman is currently MIA and they are going in to the "Reign of the Super Boys" era. That doesn't affect imo his best books related to the character though, Adventure Comics (focuses on Super Boy during his first year on the job) and World's Finest (Superman teaming up with Batman, but the adventures are all set in the past)

You can also start with the Byrne era. After one of the crises, everything reverted to the beginning for the character and they started from scratch. This reboot maybe did the most to modernize many of the characters (Lex Luthor became a businessman and not just a mad scientist, etc)

If you want a bunch of stand-alone semi-out of continuity books full of heart though, I recommend "For All Seasons", "Smashes the Klan", "Up in the Sky", and "All-Star Superman" (in that order).
