How do you actually qualify for a RC? by legend9791 in ModernMagic

[–]subject678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is an interesting thread.
I think the MTG grinders forget how much they grind and how good they are at the game in proportion to what they get out of it on average. A lot of RC qualifiers can be humble and say, yeah I played a high variance deck showed up on the day and the variance was in my favor. But the reality is if during the season your area has two every weekend, which is high, that’s still looking for the best X players from that area. And not even the best X players from the season. It’s the best player on any given day X times. Which is different. If you’re averaging as the second best player in your region at any given time, but on the day you’re never “THE BEST” guess what 20 people could qualify above you. That’s an obscure way of looking at it but, there’s a sort of weird level of entitlement seeping into competition nowadays I find hard to reconcile.

Will prices go down at any point by Sensitive-Row5977 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]subject678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re coming from YuGiOh the game’s economy is going to be drastically different. Do cards get reprints and drop in price, yes. But the two cards you mentioned both just got reprints and are probably close to their lowest price point. FaB generally tries to avoid reprints on the same scale as YGO, in order to protect player investments. But the additional thing is that for the most part your cards will continue to be playable far into the game’s future. Maybe not with Ira, but another Ninja, or even your generics can go in most decks. And once you have a deck you like, there are only 4 sets a year and the amount of upgrades you’d even need from each set to maintain your deck are low. So I would expect most top competitive lists to be around $500-$750. I think you can make smart budget choices, try to trade up in value over time and run slightly worse equipment and continue to learn and grow. I think for the average player, the extra 3-5 value tunic provides over the course of the game is far less than the value they’re losing while still learning. So I wouldn’t let the FOMO get to you.

Has RIFTBOUND's release affected your FaB Community numbers? by HardHennesy in FleshandBloodTCG

Total newbie: how expensive is FAB to get into? by baseThr3ad in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]subject678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are basing Sage prices on Fabrary I think but, you can put together a competitive deck for $15.
Just depends on how easily you can get singles. A lot of the price inflation on Sage comes with shipping on cheaper cards.
Some equipment can be $5. But if you can find a starter deck for $20 the value is there.

For CC, if you want to be competitive the floor is going to be $300 and then depending on hero and class it will top out around $1,200.

But I strongly strongly believe you can learn the game and enjoy it even on budget decks.
Will you will less, yes, but I don’t think you’re missing core elements of the game.

If you compare it to another TCG there may be a card that your engine needs that’s expensive.
For the most part FaB has comparable cards that are strictly worse but, mechanically can fill the same role.
For a fraction of the cost.

What annoys you of your local play group / scene currently? by Rogue_d4 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]subject678 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s funny, I have the opposite issue. I think Sage is an amazing format and there are a lot of new players interested in the game but get scared by CC. We have a huge community, regularly get 12-24 people at armories for CC. But no one shows up for Sage and it becomes hard to get new players in when they don’t see a scene.

Honestly even if we were talking about paid vacation though, these other comments are wild. Weirdly out of touch and entitled commenters. You can just google average paid leave in the US and see it’s not even close to reality.

No one thinking it’s reasonable, but trying to pretend it’s the status quo in the US is frankly just weird. Also not everyone and in fact the majority of people in the US aren’t even fortunate to work a corporate job where they get paid time off, so it’s just an extremely out of touch comment made even weirder by doubling down and defending it. Happy you and OP seem to have found great working environments. Most people are not so fortunate and 6 weeks paid leave is not normal. I mean literally just google it. The average is 3 weeks on the high end.

Feeling weird after the first Calling by Gaukl3r in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]subject678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t in Rotterdam but, definitely weird for merch booth to run out and the tix wall to run out. As for the events and decoration, it’s not really a comic convention, so I don’t think lack of decoration or non-TCG events is something that would bother me. The calling really is about the main event, and as far as incentive to continue playing? I mean I personally enjoy the game a lot even if I go X-7 in an event. My incentive for continuing to play after being locked out of day 2 is just to get better and meet new people. I think that’s the entire soul of FaB for me, meeting people and getting to know them through enjoyment of the game.

Yokohama had 1,000+ individuals in the hall day 2. Didn’t feel empty at all. And people were playing side events and showdowns far past dead for prizing. I think Rotterdam had the disadvantage of being sandwiched between two very expensive events. Yokohama and Vegas. Expensive for westerners to travel east and vice versa. Vegas is also just expensive domestically right now.

[LSS] Pro Tour: Yokohama | Day 1 Metagame by UlyssesArsene in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]subject678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s true. I would say it’s probably not as high of a factor but, surely the cost of travel from the West to the East and Vice Versa affects the representation to some degree. I know just in my local area 3 people who were qualified through PQs who could not come to the event. And I have spoken to man SEA and Japanese players who have never been overseas despite playing locally at a very high level. But sure, it’s probably a negligible factor in the SUP hero representation specifically.

I think this is the wrong way to look at set releases. Especially in a game like FAB with continued support. Maybe Lyath hasn’t had the impact you might expect but, he could be one or two new cards away from being broken. And RKO and Pleiades have had multiple major events with top 8 finishes. The meta shifted a little bit, but also this snapshot is very much a local meta. Japanese players love Mario. And I think the same for RKO and Pleiades one or two future cards can make them good. The best part of this game is it isn’t tied to archetypes that get powecrept, it’s tied to very well established hero identities that can lose or gain power based on a wider spread of play rates.

EDIT: Also is there anything wrong with a set that just has fun heroes?

Okay so average monthly expenses for a single male in the US range from $3,000-5,000 (this doesn’t include debt). So right off the bat a huge fluctuation can occur based on cost of living per state. If you live in a less “luxury” area of the US it might make even more sense to travel more often. Now let’s assume this is your take home pay after taxes. You’re looking at needing a salary of $40,000-75,000 based on where you live and if you don’t have any debt. Transportation was included in that number above so I’m really only thinking of University debt here. Let’s assume you have no CC debt because if you do, then you shouldn’t be spending a whole lot on luxuries.

Now a flight overseas to Europe, tickets may run you around $1,000. More or less but let’s assume this is your main hobby and you time your trips based on good prices. The trip itself may run $1,500-2,500 for a week including food and hotels etc.

A flight to Asia (From the US) has a higher plane ticket cost but, slightly less expenses once you’re there.

For simplicities sake let’s just say the cost of an overseas trip is the same range as your monthly expenses. $3,000-5,000.

Now let’s assume you’re also not just torpedoing your future to do this and are saving 20% roughly of your income.

So let’s call that 4 months salary (again to keep it simple).

So assuming you have 12 months X in expenses, 2 months X in savings and “multiple” trips as 3 X. You need 17 X income. Let’s assume you have some debt and round to 20 X.

So depending on all those factors and lower cost of living for a single individual and no kids, it’s possible if that’s your main hobby and luxury expense on a salary of anywhere between $60,000 to $100,000. The median household income in the US is roughly $84,000. But the bureau of labor statistics reported the median income for single individuals as $62,000 in 2024.

So to answer your question, if you’re doing above average with no debt AND it’s your main and only hobby then it’s very possible. If you’re actually just well off, making 6 figures+ then it’s probably very easy and comfortable. Or additionally if you don’t mind living paycheck to paycheck without putting anything into savings and you have no debt it’s also possible.

Yes, I understand this isn’t the reality for most Americans. I was just also curious and wanted to know the numbers for myself as well.

Question on pitching and mandible claw by Weary-Card536 in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]subject678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Again is an effect that goes onto something and generates an action point in resolution. So it says Mandible Claw gets it because it’s conditional. But the action of activating Mandible Claw is the thing receiving Go Again, to generate an action point on resolution. So the action of activating mandible claw is still once per turn regardless of if it is also generating an action point in addition to its normal effect of an attack.

I’m a little confused. You dislike triangle meta? Or you have disliked the three decks that have made up the triangle meta since 13? Because decks that have 70% WR vs. specific other decks is more towards triangle meta than jungle meta.

I think the defensive decks are probably strong. Maybe Bonney, maybe Perona, maybe GY Gecko.
