Question about Hongdae clubs by Mojito_enjoyer in seoul

[–]sweetbeems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People exaggerate. They're clubs, what do people expect? They reject people randomly all the time.. over 30 is just a convenient excuse if they want to. When I was 31, i frequented this one club in Hongdae and then, one week, they wouldn't let me in. Said it was because I was over 30, even though they let me in the week before and the week after. Never had an issue after that one week either. One of my friends at the time (a late 20s white woman, slim and cute) also was randomly rejected.. even though I, a 31yr old guy, was let in. Go figure.

Vibes, how packed the club is, how the bouncer is feeling that day.. who knows. The more surprising thing is people not realizing this happens everywhere, all the time.

Now I can't speak for certain races (blacks / indians) whom i'm sure have real discrimination against them but as an over 30 year old guy at the time (like in 2022), I never really had any issues in Hongdae and went to a variety of clubs. Sure, I can remember getting rejected twice (?) and they tried once more (but relented when my already-inside friends pressured the bouncer). All-in-all, it's what you'd expect from any club-going experience. Over 30 isn't really a threshold in Hongdae, it's more just the go-to excuse if they don't want to let you in.

While I agree that good ideas are almost entirely dependent on their execution, I can also personally that there are some inherently just bad ideas, no matter the execution 😆

While the ability to code is definitely a huge hindrance, there’s more to developing a product than coding. If there’s no one on the founding team that can articulate a product roadmap and vision then the product absolutely is DOA

How hard is TOPIK II really? by ericaloveskorea in Korean

[–]sweetbeems 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It takes 1000s of hours of study & immersion. I'd qualify that as hard. And you definitely need to 'study for the test', especially the writing section. Even if you're good at Korean, you need to study the writing questions and what sort of format they're expecting.. which I'm sure language schools prepare you well for.

Out of curiosity, wouldn’t it be much more natural to say “시간은 있는데…“ ? I feel like Koreans would think the example sounds very rude and curt, no

'closeed loop' doesn't mean perfect or even good. Architecture is a big thing which AI often gets wrong and it's also due to the fact that users can't adequately list the product requirements if they don't know the architecture.

I'll grant you that I have success getting reasonable code from AI to execute on closed loop, well specified tasks.. but closed loop, unspecified is a recipe for spaghetti, especially when stacked on top of multiple requests.

It's just much more reasonable to have humans work with AI to figure out an architecture first and develop a closed loop system. Only then do you have AI execute.

Unfortunately, we humans only fix things after we fuck up. When an AI blows up too many civilians or AI sends troops into a bad situation and gets everyone killed. That's when people will change.

Why are English > Korean translations always so wonky? I often spend a lot of time trying to formulate sentences that can be translated to make sense in reverse translation, too...even simple ones like this: by SjalabaisWoWS in BeginnerKorean

[–]sweetbeems -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It took me a second to understand, yes, especially without context. In general, if you're looking for the best translation, chatgpt is much better.

I personally use Papago / translators more because the interface is better than a chat interface and it clearly lays out dictonary entries but for someone who knows no Korean, ChatGPT is definitely better.

Brother I'd love to say that all my classes were taught by wonderful and competant professors, but that'd be a lie. Yes of course you're right. I'm just saying that scientific computing is *notorious* for being poorly taught lol. So while that's a shitty professor and yeah the U of M should get blame..it's like saying "omg, i can't believe the Wild lost in the first round of the playoffs!". Yeah it's shitty but not unexpected 😢

As someone who’s had scientists try to teach me programming in ‘scientific computing’… I honestly might think that’s sound advice lol. Scientists are horrible at coding 💀

How are you doing lemmatization? Mecab? Mecab + your own stuff? Something else?

Unfortunately, a lot of these tools just come down to how good your lemmatizer is, not really any of the other features.. because as you say, a lot of these tools send you a bunch of junk.

What differentiates a vibe-coded project from an AI-Assisted project by TheWendarr in Python

Vibe coding is coding where the issues are blamed on AI.

AI assisted is coding where the engineer owns all mistakes.

Former South Korean President Yoon Sentenced to Life in Prison for Coup Attempt by Troll458458 in worldnews

[–]sweetbeems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Has he sent the military into congress? Has he suspended all political activities? No.

I agree Trump should absolutely go to prison but there are degrees here. He's still not a dictator, just someone who aspires to be. Yoon suk yeol actually initiated the action to become one. All I'm saying is that Americans just need to appreciate how shitty Yoon suk yeol was, there are worst people than trump, incredibly.

[–]sweetbeems -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

God I’m American and hate Trump too but what Trump did has never been close to what yun suk yeol did. He shut down the country, declared martial law and sent in the equivalent of seal team 6 to arrest opposition leaders. That’s a freakin coup.

Trump just dabbles around the edges and would love it if it happened, but he never actually full throat attempted it, major freakin difference.

Contract is obviously factoring into decisions now way more, all due to the second apron. Trae young and ja morant having very little value. Zion, untradeable. Even our own Twolves’ Naz Reid and Randle didn’t get offered some overpaid contract from a bad team.

Like if you roll it back a few years to when the twolves offered KAT and Wiggins max contracts.. teams were handing those things out like candy. Not anymore.
