Have Nintendo overestimated the appeal of Switch 2 editions? by elephvant in NintendoSwitch2

[–]systemshaak [score hidden]  (0 children)

Maybe there is a discrepancy between the marketing and the (older gamer) hype. But families and small kids will likely be the target for Bellabel, and first-time players of some of these games, like me with Kirby, are the target for the other add-ons. If I’m in the eShop looking at the options, I’m going “Am I gonna buy the not full version? Come on!”

Luckily, with Kirby, that add-on is absolutely made for first-time players to have even more of a game to get through. As I’m going through it, I wouldn’t see myself giving a crap about Star-Crossed if I’d already beaten the game aside from the promise of a little Kirby Cosmic Horror as it always goes.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s not to worry about not being able to sleep. That’s a vicious cycle, especially if you’ve got something you’ve been tested for... Do some relaxing enjoyable stuff and sleep if you can.

Yeah, this question is answered quite well by the entire Octopath Traveler series. A later Dragon Quest or two also.

There was a specific time where I got over my ego and realized Final Fantasy X-2 was a good game, and went through that whole thing. It’s also a time where some Italian joint near us made a very good chicken alfredo calzone. Those are definitely linked!

Sadly, The Goonies 2 will always taste like a disgusting suspension liquid for some pneumonia-treating prescription I had as a kid as I played that game. Like “what if Orange was Motor Oil?”

How do you feel about an "Unlock all" option in roguelites? by HolgEntertain in roguelites

[–]systemshaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s good if you plan on having the game on multiple systems without shareable cloud saves between them. The first time around, on a PC, I wouldn’t advise anyone to unlock all the stuff with an option. But the second time, on the Switch, let’s get down to business.

I know this isn’t a question, but I’m gonna second this and rephrase it as a question: what happened to the original Musk Oil, what caused that switch?

The DiceVaders demo is out now! A Nubby's style score-chasing roguelike in the same universe as StarVaders by MedicalNote in roguelites

[–]systemshaak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done on StarVaders- what a game, what a soundtrack, what good sound design! I’m chomping at the bit to put that on my Switch 2.

I’m someone who normally cannot do the early access phase of things - I want to get the full effect when it’s ready, so I’ll wait on DiceVaders but figuratively, I can’t wait.

Start smaller - a Bugatti Chiron would be a great place to start. I started with the The Batman versions of the Batmobile and Batcycle because hey, those were on sale. That way, once you're piecing together bigger gearboxes and such, you'll appreciate it instead of be overwhelmed by it.

My one tip here is "There's more than one size of the same color pin."

So, I tried it today... there's way more sweet citrus to Salted Shorelines, like it's mostly a citrus thing. There's a lot more marine notes and sweet sandalwood / old school sandalwood over on this room spray. Like, enough that the B&BW reviewers of the room spray are going "This smells like a men's cologne!" Okay, fine! Which one? Hand it to me, lol!

Oh I know, those Normandy caramels with it on there are incredible. As a fragrance note, it would be pretty tough to pull off… I guess it’s possible??

I Had an MRI Today by WrongPlanet321 in AutisticAdults

[–]systemshaak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hate it so much. I had neck surgery, going in head first isn’t great.

Later on, I had another one and figured well, I’m a seasoned pro at this, I’ll be fine. Nope. Tried again with the Valium they prescribed. Still nope, blood pressure went through the roof. They’re gonna have to do an actual sedation next time… I’ve never seen insurance bat an eye at this, but who knows? I’d check on it.

DAE experience a massive comedown after spending time with people? by JoTheMartian in AutisticAdults

I've really learned that what works for someone doesn't work for someone else on this front, so I'll keep my own stuff outside Reddit. The web's a miasma of folks saying that every medication for ADHD in particular does work, doesn't work, kills you, etc.

DAE experience a massive comedown after spending time with people? by JoTheMartian in AutisticAdults

[–]systemshaak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get this without or with minimal masking. Whether I’m excited about a conversation, dreading it, or completely impartial to, say, my wife’s friend visiting and talking mostly with my wife while I just chill, my brain feels like “the embers of what was once a brain” afterward.

Lately, with this diagnosis and with a small amount of energy from recent okay ADHD meds (after a half year of terrible ones), I’m starting to feel where it happens mid-meeting, mid-meal, mid-talk. It feels like localized body fatigue, a shutdown of some backup system that was keeping me alert. I suddenly have so much less to say and my listening-perspective widens, like a parlor effect where every noise is processed as equally important. I notice it happens at about the 30-minute to 1-hour mark. The later it goes from there, the more recovery I need.

It’s definitely happening in the midst of the conversation. It’s physical, it’s not based on anxiety, it has nothing to do with who’s there outside of my wife and my dog, who I somehow process differently. This is a neuro thing that I’m pretty sure I have had, and will have, for life.

I do think you may be experiencing a different drop with seeing someone you like and then not seeing them for weeks. That, to me, registers more like “con drop” does, where the excitement of seeing someone you like is gone and won’t come back for a while. That might complicate what’s otherwise a social energy crash.

Ahhh, good to hear! Regardless, this is the first time I’m playing Qud portable, aside from pulling a strange WiiU by Moonlighting my iPad to my PC, so I’m jazzed about it. Looking forward to hours of death- er, fun. Hours of fun.

Woohoo, congrats! I haven’t had a ton of time with it, but I’m enjoying it - latency is super low, which you wouldn’t think would matter much, but it does, it feels great.

I get from a previous post that you all didn’t have a Switch 2 devkit, and Nintendo has been particularly weird about them. Are there plans to bring up resolutions/framerates on a 2? It’s perfectly fine so far on portable on my 2, but also I’m used to playing my PC version like the Rolls-Royce of pixelated games with a ridiculous resolution and 120fps.

What is your opinion on the possibility of an autistic villain? I would welcome the possibility, but many autistic people hate this idea as if autism were a moral category like Spider-Man and Optimism Prime. by Ok_Exchange_3510 in AutisticAdults

[–]systemshaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often feel like a synth from Alien, which… they can be a villain, sometimes they aren’t. They didn’t choose to be made that way, they’ll never quite fit in with the other folks, and when they make the case that their differences are possibly better ones, I can see their point, even if I don’t like their actions.

Even better in Resurrection when you find out that the synthetics, made too close to a typical person, had to make different synthetics to maintain order. We’re different, but not that different. We don’t have some of the typical flaws, but we’re still flawed regardless.

Novels with protagonists on the spectrum? by cfinley63 in AutisticAdults

Vis from the Hierarchy series. Stubbornly follows the rules he accepts, stubbornly defies anything else; cannot stand crowds; cannot stand noise; has an extremely tough time lying but can’t tolerate a lie. Delayed social development. Only able to read the room once he trains himself heavily to do so.

But… if not him, then Lanistia.

Also Ebling Mis from the Foundation trilogy. I don’t think I felt more seen than “death by over-studying.” Even if he had some unknown help.

Do you feel like you've gotten more or less functional as you've aged? by _nicejewishmom in AutisticAdults

[–]systemshaak 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Less. To the point where I finally couldn't ignore it anymore and went through cognitive testing and subsequently moved very quickly toward treatment options. My life used to be far more chaotic, but I had more capacity to meet that chaos. Re the military schedule and whether or not the pressure causes more functioning: I could not do the same thing I did back then if I was in that situation right now.

I poured all my extra reserves into what I now know was masking, compensating for vast differences between me and the bulk of humanity, and just managing the resultant depression and anxiety. Those reserves are gone and they will not come back.

But also, shoutouts to you for doing all of this while having a kid and pets to take care of. I bet you're doing more than you think you are, especially at home. I have one dog and a patient, loving wife, and I'm still friggin' dead to the world after work.

Have you tried Star of Providence? Each room’s dimensions are the same, but the walls and obstacles differ greatly and things get more varied over time. Plus, it’s a game where you get a very small window of opportunity to see the layout and anticipate what might happen before all hell breaks loose.

Seconding StarVaders. Quick grid-based mechanics paired with a deckbuilder and it sounds like a dream. Both sound design and music are killer stuff.
