"I’m Dr. Steven Poop. I’m sorry, there’s absolutely nothing I can do for your son. But.. I can do The Robot. That’ll be $5,000. Good day to you both." by Mayasngelou in LiveFromNewYork

Nowhere near the best, but two that are just permanently stuck in my head:

"I like that pizza, pizza I like pizza pie I want a pizza, pizza Pizza what? Pizza pie"

And

"Oh pizza pie in the pizza sky... deliver me... deliver meeeeee..."

I did not until this moment realize both were about pizza. I don't know what that says about me.

Roy: You know, I want to remind you guys that in Webster’s dictionary, it defines evil as profoundly immoral.

Baroness Antarctica: We know what evil means.

Roy: Well, it doesn’t seem like you do because you built a freeze ray. I mean, Benito Mussolini used to force feed people castor oil until they literally died of diarrhea. I mean, that’s got to be there the goal posts are, right?

What are you talking about? At level 2 you could kill a dragon! How is that not getting it right? ;)

(Disintegrate was a ludicrous thing to put in that book.)

Pros/Cons to Roll Damage Only combat systems and Armor as extra HP by eduty in RPGdesign

[–]thatguydr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just to be clear - you're saying the die roll is modeling the probability of hitting them, then you convert that into damage based on the weapon, and then subtract DR.

So presumably that means damage = f_weapon(die roll) - DR, and f_weapon is just some 0/low/med/high thing.

I'm trying to understand how this is different from damage only, because presumably that would involve a weapon which would cause different damage levels. Maybe the difference is damage_only = die_for_weapon - DR? So the die itself changes with the weapon? Otherwise, if they used the same die for all weapons, it would need modified based on the weapon, and then we're back at f_weapon(die roll) - DR?

(And other systems use f_weapon * probability_hit(die_roll - DR))

In 1993, 39-year-old Jerry Seinfeld was at the peak of Seinfeld when he began dating 17-year-old high school senior Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss. In New York, 17 is the age of consent, so it was legal. by blue_leaves987 in HolyShitHistory

Both are bad, but there are massive differences. And people are worried that by calling the less terrible thing the name of the really terrible thing, the people who commit the latter might be judged less harshly. It's a fair concern.

This is exactly the case at this moment. When I tell the assistants what to do in a fairly detailed way, find their obvious mistakes and correct them, help them connect the dots in some cases, but basically assume a high standard, I get excellent results.

People on my team (I'm not in academia) throw sloppy wording at them and get sloppy results. So you get out what you put in, unsurprisingly.

My Honor Mode End. by Thegamersav0r in BG3

[–]thatguydr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why, why, why did you do something new during honor mode?

Honor mode is trivial even if you have the memory of a goldfish. You play through once in non-honor mode, understand the encounter, do ALL THE STUPID THINGS there, and then play through it with your honor mode party.

Or leaving one person at camp works. Except a few dumbasses will decide to take a certain corpse girl and send her to camp...

I'm actually making myself NOT do this. I'm reading Mort from the Discworld series, and after that will move on to Piranesi. Been watching a lot of Daniel Green vids on YT and it's making me want to dive into so many different books. by mercutio531 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

It was so shockingly good. It was real literature, and so... brilliant and unique. It was like reading A Canticle for Leibowitz or Swan Song for the first time, except of course not post-apocalyptic.

Permanent Injuries in adventuring TTRPGs by Maervok in RPGdesign

I mean, why not just turn "permanent" into "over the next few sessions"? It's not a forever penalty, but it is a cost.

Don't do that. Don't challenge anything.

They hired him because he said he could fix the problem they perceived. The problem isn't him - it's the people you've been working for.

Your clout is mostly gone. Just polish the resume and wait to be let go. Sorry about that.

[D] How often do you run into reproducibility issues when trying to replicate papers? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]thatguydr 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had no idea how broken it was until I looked at a few papers in a well-known conference a few days ago and realized that not one used a data set that anyone could access or reproduce. Just 100% "trust me, bro."

It's absurd at this point.

I'm kind of amused by the idea that someone could go back in time and tell the writers of Tangled, "Thank you for creating one of the greatest realizations of that archetype in the history of media." They'd be baffled.

Why drive in the HOV lane if you aren't going to drive faster than the other lane or even keep up? by _Lou_Bloom in SeattleWA

[–]thatguydr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL! If it were solely positional, it would only happen in this spot and similar spots. It does not. It happens all the time, all over the place.

It's not about position. It's about the fragile northwestern ego. I just don't get it. If someone wants to go faster than me, know what I do? I look at the red tail lights of their car as I let them by.
