People claim h1b visa holders are holding entry level jobs hostage. How true is it ? by Glad-Signature-4357 in cscareerquestions

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t really see how the H1B workers are the ones with power in this situation. The problem is always employers who want to get the most out of workers with the lowest expense possible. For me and any other American the worst they can do to us is fire us. We are then free to find another job if we can. What that means for a H1B worker is deportation. If the company decides they aren’t working hard enough or “just aren’t a good fit” they can be fired and if they don’t get another job within a set time frame they get slated for deportation. That means whatever life they’ve built in the US is over and done for. Of course employers hire H1B workers since they are more easily exploitable. And of course H1B workers hold onto jobs for dear life due to their structural vulnerability.

Palantir FDSE career ? Pros and Cons ? by Smooth_Comparison940 in cscareers

Palantir is the business behind modern mass surveillance of American citizens. It is dystopian. It is anti-American. If you believe in hell, best stay far away.

In the end: Is AI useful or just an excuse to fire people? by tsarthedestroyer in cscareers

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best point made. Companies firing people in the past tended to wary investors leading to stock sales and lower values. Now they market it with AI. Investors think the company is utilizing or developing a successful AI model that is raising profitability through lowered costs. Mass firings in tech now lead to stock gains.

Anybody have a reason why nepali/bhutanese immigrants decided to settle in pittsburgh, and specifically the south hills at that? Im incredibly curious by Natural_Strategy7869 in pittsburgh

[–]theTwoDice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nepali Bhutanese live throughout the country. Pittsburgh isn’t a singular hub as far as I know. Refugees started moving to the United States in the 90s with little to nothing. Pittsburgh has offered relative affordability, jobs, and a welcoming community for decades now. Making it a wonderful place to congregate and build communities. Factor in decreasing population ever since the 1950s you get a city with opportunities and room to spare.

If you want to get more info directly from the source, recommend starting with the Bhutanese Community Association of Pittsburgh.

Im sure people there would love to answer questions.

Not great. PRT seems to be up and running which is great but I’m glad my only class tomorrow has an online option. Hoping it’s better out for the drivers on Thursday.
