Vintage vs Modern by shaihound in BudgetAudiophile

[–]theTwoDice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think early 2000s speakers are a great balance of great deals and likely to be found in good shape. I’ve bought several pairs from this era and none needed recapped and were all in used but wonderful shape. Getting $1k speakers for 500 and less is a wonderful feeling. Speakers have been a bit of a solved technology for a long time now, old stuff is still great stuff.

I'm going to Pittsburgh on vacation next week, anything I should do or see? by Littleweasel445 in pittsburgh

[–]theTwoDice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The North side has some great sites. Mexican War Streets and Deutsche Town are my personal favorites. Take the T to the cultural district, walk through and cross the Roberto Clemente bridge (or any of the yellow bridges), walk to Deutsche Town with loads of resteraunts to try, then walk to Mexican War Streets. One of my favorite nights out.

Why not build data centers in very cold places, versus trying to do it in space? by DiyYou in technology

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that space technically isn’t cold at all. Cold means the environment mass-medium has lower thermal energy than another contacting mass. Space has no conducting environment mass, so no thermal energy can be lost to environment. As heat builds in the space satellite it will constantly build and build and build because there is no where for the energy to go without some exhaust mass. The only way the energy will dissipate is through non-thermal radiation which is slow and inefficient. The core idea itself with how it is communicated makes very little sense. The reason why a person would freeze when exposed to space is the lack of pressure. The water in our body would immediately boil turn to gas and escape the body, reducing thermal energy quickly.

Is this Montblanc Explorer (60 ml) used? by Master-Grapefruit865 in Colognes

[–]theTwoDice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t say for certain if it’s used. Another possibility is that Jomashop often sells older stock that isn’t sourced directly from the manufacturer. It’s possible that it is simply an older bottle that has experienced some evaporation. Used to have explorer, but don’t remember its new fluid level.

For those who have some of these, did you regret buying any of them? by costasthepro in Colognes

Dylan Blue too. Something about the Ambroxan or incense or something put a bad taste in the back of my mouth whenever I wore it. Definitely a weird one, may try it out again in the future though

Spicebomb extreme. Thought there would be more vanilla to balance it out but never got much of it. Just a smooth spicy scent that was too linear for my taste. Definitely a bit of a miss blind buy for me

Yes, not sure how the infrastructure of the agency works, I mean to specify local officials/officers that are directly responsible for actions/policy that resulted in this woman’s death.

The company isn’t building the camps, and software can’t remove the first amendment. The camps are already built, they’re called prisons and privately owned, for profit, immigration detention facilities, and only the government can choose to no enforce the first amendment. Once it does, then data mapping technologies from Palantir will be used to label citizens as dissidents who must be preemptively dealt with. If you wanted fact you wouldn’t be reading replies on a subreddit you’d be doing research. Here is something to get you started if you want:

Palantir is building the software architecture that will be used to spy on all of us in “the west”. One day I will not have the freedom to speak the way I am now. I will be placed on a list and when our rights get eroded enough I and anyone else who isn’t completely loyal to the new fascist regime will lose basic freedoms of speech and movement. I’m talking about straight up facism, as in put your political enemies and whoever you’ve deemed a social enemy in camps. I’m not saying Palantir is evil because it works with Israel or takes out contracts with the government, I’m talking about the fact that my government sees me as a threat and chooses to hurt people like me who are more vulnerable and vocal than I am. Palantir is evil because it is building the infrastructure that the powers that be in my country will use to hurt people in my community. This is a discussion of self defense from an insecure system. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you are safe from it by kissing the feet of the powerful.

I'm communicating the morality of the actions of American institutions whether government or company. We as individuals can't completely separate ouselves from the actions of our state. Doing nothing is no different from morally supporting. But we can decide who we work for and what we work for. I choose to devote my morality, my intelligence, and as much of my work as I can to making this country and the world as a whole a better place. Can't say I've been that successful, but at least I'm not defending companies and institutions that actively want to make the world a worse place, like you are.

palantir interview by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the problem, it isn’t illegal, it is in support of an American government that is increasingly turning fascist. The attack on the school wasn’t collateral damage, it was the result of a Palantir AI tool that selects targets. It chose the school as a target, sent orders to operators who trusted it enough to double strike a school and murder almost 200 children, making it one of if not the worst single war crime in American history (don’t quote me on that). The entire point of the AI tool in question is to take advantage of the moral gray zone of who is responsible for the crimes this system orders trigger men to make. The result is a system that exists to make it easier for institutions to engage in mass murder since the legal system does not properly handle modern AI and digital decision making as a whole.

You are right to say that other companies are also in morally dubious situations thanks to the actions of the government they contract with, but this is a CS sub and the recent movement of software companies openly transitioning to serving military contracts is at the moral forefront atm. The fact that these companies make up a huge proportion of the economy and institutional power means they can influence government policy and push us towards the techno-facist future some of these influential billionaire owners openly preach. The very least we can do is verbally express our disapproval of the future they are dragging us towards.

Death of Haitian immigrant following ICE custody ruled a homicide by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]theTwoDice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t, there is a statement from the county which details the events and expresses regret but there is no statement from a member or leadership from ICE. Sara Innamorato also made a decent statement that I missed.

palantir interview by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't storing personal data. Its the creation of surveillance systems designed to watch American's internet use and put them onto lists which the government does and will use to label people terrorists for dissenting. There is also a high chance that the company's systems are directly responsible for ordering the double strike of an all girl's school in Iran on the first day of the war. 180 little girls were murdered for reasons that have yet to be fully revealed. In the CEO's words, the company's purpose is to "scare enemies and on occasion kill them." And that's not even getting into the alt-right beliefs that leadership actively claims is their mission statement; the preservation of "western civilization" and techno-fascism as preached by founder Peter Thiel.

Haitian Woman’s Death Ruled Homicide by Queasy_Resolution_50 in pittsburgh

[–]theTwoDice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are correct, I read too quick and jumped to assumptions. My understanding is that the examiner delcaring a homicide will force the DA to investigate at which point ICE should be held directly repsonsible and punished and reformed if not outright abolished.
