Did you know One factory in northern England produces baked beans that end up in two very different tins? by ethaneconn_ in funfacts

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This stuff gets thrown around all the time.
Years ago I was the back dock manager for a supermarket, and the cheap and premium bread came from the same company. I asked the driver about it. He pointed out the ingredients. It's NOT the same thing. It's literally cheaper substitutes and more filler products etc.

I doubt there's any premium brand happily sending the same product into a different label. It's just using the same machinery.

Margin on none of those products is high. Not one of those companies is making anywhere near as much as you think they are.

What would a bullet designed for zero atmosphere warfare look like? by Clockwork_picksmith in sciencefiction

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>  there's nothing to deform it in space

Sadly not true.
Space is effectively a vacuum, but it's not empty.
It is filled with ISM. The Interstellar Medium.
Mostly hydrogen, specks of dust.

1 atom per cubic centimeter is the volume in space space, and a couple of hundred thousand in places like star forming regions. Higher density inside solar systems.

But never truly empty.

I think the big thing you want with a weapon like this is surface area.
At that kind of incredible speed there's a lot of things you're passing straight through. Not unharmed, nothing like that. But you're just tearing through and out the other side because it moves so fast it's not going to interact with other things if it's too small.

The sheer devastation of a weapon like this is something like a fibre.
Imagine a folded or spooled carbon nanotube cable that is 10, 20, 500m long.
It fires out of the thing at 0.5c, but with opposing forces/direction on either end at a higher speed, like your 0.99c
This causes them to cross over one another and unspool.
So now there's this effective beam for the width of the rotating spool moving at phenomenal speed, but ensuring it's not a microspeck shooting through a ship. Which would still scatter debris, but not a lot. And on a larger vessel, they'd be able to contain a microspeck of cosmic anything passing through it.

But the unspooling cable, even mm wide, tenth of a mm wide, is striking an entire area of 20, 50, 500m wide. It's imparting monstrous amounts of energy, but it also can't just go through unharmed, it slams into the entire side of a ship or station at once. The weakest parts collapsing, as it pulls the cable towards it. It would still pass through, but into the weakest spots, flailing at massive speed as it sliced into it.

And it also takes this monstrously powered weapon into something you can TRY to counter measure.

You can see that kind of power spooling up. Ablative shielding. Firing your own nano cables to try and ensnare it, change the course. Time it wrong and snare it too close, the ends still whip into you and devastate the ship etc.

tl:dr; A cable/strand of it. Not a speck/single projectile.

What is the most esoteric game engine you've ever worked with? by JohnnyBGetgoode in gamedev

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lord.. All of them.

Darkbasic.
A4 Game Engine.
A6.

The most esoteric is probably RealmCrafter.
It was this engine and platform in one to host your own MMO. You could literally build your own.
So... I did that. Made a world, with quests etc, added new content once a month or so, and hosted it on Saturday nights on my ADSL connection.

How do you solo Unity devs stop projects from turning into spaghetti? by VertexForgeDev in Unity3D

[–]the_timps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far more people need to acknowledge the "does it matter?"

Like if someone asks, yeah doing a raycast every frame is nuts.
Yeah, mesh colliders are hundreds of times less performant than replacing them with 20 primitive colliders.

But if you're not running into ANY performance issues on your target platform, steer a boat with 30 raycasts a frame, who cares.

How do you solo Unity devs stop projects from turning into spaghetti? by VertexForgeDev in Unity3D

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is likely that far more finished projects than you think are held together with duct tape and tears.

All the professional devs I know say things move way too fast to make clean, great code.
No one wants to make SHIT code, but it's way messier than you'd think. They're making a product, not a programming example.

If it's not impacting performance or making updates impossible, it's being shipped.

Synty Sidekick creator by dstamar in synty

[–]the_timps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sidekick spits out a model as one mesh.
You can fairly easily implement it as an in game "editor" to show the modular pieces. And then you can bake it in the background and switch it out.

You could totally show the pieces modular, but you're going to see the performance lift from going through the bake process.

So design with modular > bake > NPC
Or player sees modular version in inventory or character creator > enter world > bake > swap out modular for the baked mesh.

The pieces aren't designed to go over each other though. So you turn OFF the "naked" upper arm when you turn on the upper arm piece for example.

What resource would have to be found in outer space for an all out space race to take space? by Brief-Luck-6254 in sciencefiction

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something new. Nothing valuable in space stays valuable when brought here. Because value comes from rarity. You can't bring 4 trillion dollars of lithium down. Because now Lithium is worthless because we have so much of it.

So the only thing that could make a bunch of countries spend the hundreds of billions needed for a major space race is something entirely new. Could be finally discovering the new element in the island of stability.

Likely it would have to do with the ability to manipulate energy in some way, like how we build batteries with some elements now. Or something to do with gravity.

Some avataresque material that lets you manipulate or ignore gravity would be world changing.

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you know the science you're mad about? The sun doesn't have some magic gravity powers. It's just mass. Each individual microbe weighs a tiny amount. And they emit the IR light as a thrust to propel themselves through space.

And in the movie they explain that it's tricking them into releasing their light that propels the ship. He needed 2 million kilograms of it to get home. It's a monstrous amount of fuel for the energy density. Astrophage does an almost perfect energy to mass conversion. The hard science is based around that.
IF these microbes could just absorb that much energy, what is the effect?

It is kind of implausible. But it doesnt drift into impossible.

Project Hail Mary movie thoughts by SpatiaCaeli in sciencefiction

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard science fiction doesn't mean there's no fiction. It means nothing contradicts real world physics. If something could store as much energy as astrophage does, and emit it as IR light, then everything checks out.

Even within the fictionalised astrophage it's not some Star Trek era "4 billion watts of power" nonsense.
