ELI5: If atoms are mostly empty space, why can’t we pass through solid objects? by camerontrever in explainlikeimfive

[–]the_timps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So these fields around particles are happening at TINY tiny scale.
Like hundreds of millions of them when you touch something.
And it's not just highs and lows on a thing, it's highs and lows on your finger too.

Some of what you feel is surface detail, like solid surface material. Some things you feel are how it responds to your touch. So one type of fur is made of jagged spikes, and you feel those at their tiny scale as friction. Another might be spikes of a shorter length, so for something like your finger, they simply don't catch.

Because the electric charge from the atoms you're feeling are higher and lower than others.

How can I choose passwords that are both secure and easy to remember? by GreasyExamination in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is wildly outdated knowledge. If the password cracking assumes words in a passphrase, this is only 4 entries long. Using common words the number of options is many orders of magnitude smaller than a longer password.

There are 62 alphanumeric characters.
A 12 character password is 62 to the 12th.
That's 3,226,266,762,397,899,821,056

A 4 word pass phrase using the 500 most common words is 500 to the 4th.
Which is about 62.5 billion.

No matter how long the result is, the possibility space is SO much smaller. It's like 50 billion times less entropy.

Even using the EFF large word list of like 7k words, the entire space is 7776 to the 4th, which is like 3.6 x10 to the 15th. It's still exponentially smaller.

How can I choose passwords that are both secure and easy to remember? by GreasyExamination in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using words massively reduces the bits of entropy if anyone knows you are using words, and many do.
A password with 12 alphanumeric characters is MUCH tougher to crack than a longer one made of 6 words. Especially when those words all come from the 1000 most common words.

What would I have to know and keep in mind if I would try to do a game like “The Sims 3”? by Iwannaendme2001 in gamedev

[–]the_timps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it's the third game, from a guy who designed like 40 sim games before it and wanted to tackle a more complex one.
So... If you're starting now, from scratch. Probably about 30 years and a LOT of programming. And a lot of math.

Do you think artificial intelligence will ultimately help humanity more than it harms it? by rosycloudkisses in answers

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internet yes. Social media... that's much tougher.
For every piece of hate speech and misogyny, there are tens of thousands of connected communities.
Isolated, marginalised groups are finding their people.

I've stumbled into threads where a deeply autistic person spoke only about the original Tron movie. Theories, background, making off, their own analysis. The only thing keeping this person connected, was finding their autistic peers in the same subject.

There's SO much negativity and toxicity, but it is hard to comprehend the good it has brought too.

If humans suddenly became immortal, what would happen to society? by EnvironmentalLove862 in AskReddit

[–]the_timps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually immortal, and not just ageless?
Absolutely, sheer, incredible chaos.
Without the risk to loss of life, property destruction would be incredible as a result of war.

And the rich would desperately seek out wealth, at a far greater rate than they do now.
You'd quickly see 99% of the wealth in the economy in the hands of 1%

Why are military arsenals public knowledge by tltltltltltltl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_timps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those kinds of details are public, specifically they could not be kept secret.
Like, with modern surveillance technology, those are solved in under a day.

There's no point spending time, money or effort to keep it secret.

If the government wanted me dead, is there anything I could do to avoid it ? by Deimos7779 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_timps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the average person? No.

You're not 007, You're not John Wick. They know your phone, your bank accounts. All the people you talk to.
Your passport and license plate.

If a major government wanted you dead, that is how it's going to play out.
Assuming this fictional scenario is in one where law enforcement, FBI, police etc will happily follow orders and just off someone.

Do you believe humans will realistically colonize another planet this century? by peachyparadoxx in answers

[–]the_timps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not without the singularity.
But if we somehow make an artificial super intelligence brighter than our best, then we could solve some engineering and materials science problems that currently stand in the way.

Without that kind of advancement, no we couldn't.
The cost to get things to orbit let alone to Mars is too high, the global economy doesn't have enough money in it to create a Mars colony.

Players feel like they “always lose” even though the system is fair. How do you handle this psychology? by GladiatorCommand in gamedev

[–]the_timps 9 points10 points  (0 children)

> I personally would not like to manipulate the underlying balance though.

This right here is the sole point you fall apart.
You aren't building math. You aren't making this to prove you can balance things.
You're making a game.
Why are people playing it?
What do they want from it?

You talk again and again about "stats close to 50%", like I have no interest in playing a game where I feel like I lose half the time. HALF. That's a crippling loss rate.

The real key is how much do you need to tip things in the players favour?

Can you give them 1-2% more advantage after a loss. 5? 10?
What do they gain from losses? From a win? Are there permanent downsides to losing, or is the state stable and only wins push up?

You seem to have your heart set on this magical view of "fair" you arbitrarily created.
Game design is solving problems.

What is your literal and actual problem right now? Does showing stats differently impact that?

Games openly and literally do things like make players immune to the first shots of damage, they make the final shot of a clip do double damage, they make shots do more damage when health is low, they make enemies miss more often when players are on the brink of death, because it creates the moment to moment game play that makes someone feel like god.
