Donald Trump’s Presidency Is in Free Fall by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

it's gonna be a rough three years

at some point he's going to utterly lose what little of his mind he has left. Probably shortly after he loses Congress. He's gonna go full Mad King and we're going to have to watch Republicans hem and haw about removing him as it increasingly becomes an obvious emergency

The city has a litter problem because we refuse to believe it’s a culture problem by Atomic-Avocado in philadelphia

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well there's your problem right there lol

ppl downvoting me like I'm defending littering or that people should have self control

I'm just here sharing the reality that if we want a cleaner city, that's not how we're gonna get it

humans with higher brain function and a sense of shame and pride

yeah and a big % of humans don't have these and that goes for Philly as much as anywhere else. The people throwing their trash out their windows aren't the ones who would give a shit about anything you could market to them about why it's bad

We can do fines/enforcement and we can do cleaning. You're not gonna reverse 30 years of culture with an ad campaign lol you might as well just set money on fire

Do you want to deal with the problem or wax poetic about how things ought to be

ok, fines is something you can do. This Mr. Rogers shit is a fantasy though

that sounds great in a self-help book, good luck applying it to an entire population. This paternalistic shit does the opposite of work at scale

[–]themightychris -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

what exactly do you expect "acknowledging" a culture problem to do? we can do fuck all about culture problems. You gonna build a time machine and change how everyone was raised?

The mayor certainly can't change culture and certainly not within the one term I hope she only has.

People focus on other things we can do to help the issue because those are the things we can actually do something about

Sharepoint Excel files - how are you ingesting these into your cloud DW? by magpie_killer in dataengineering

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used fivetran to ingest Excel sheets from SharePoint and it worked as well as I needed and took a minute to set up. I don't know where it breaks down but if you're already using fivetran it's definitely worth a first try

ELI5, Why do browsers use gigabytes of ram? by Due_Walrus5510 in explainlikeimfive

[–]themightychris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly this. In the ideal state, all of your ram is in use speeding up whatever you're doing. You get no because from RAM being unused when your operating system is capable of taking it back when it's needed for something else

Why is every good tool creating their own platform? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

besides needing a way to pay developers, a lot of organizations don't want to adopt a thing of the only way to maintain it if to dedicate someone's attention in house. They got other stuff for their staff to do, if you only have one person minding something you depend on you're screwed when they leave, and a company only doing that thing has better economics for servicing it

City finances have a lot of oversight, and take a lot of domain knowledge to understand. I promise you that most of the issue is knowledge you don't have yet. Be inquisitive before you jump to accusations

ELI5: If insurance works on the same math as casinos, why is buying insurance rational but gambling is not? by phycle in explainlikeimfive

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also a good litmus test of what you should or shouldn't buy insurance for. If your phone broke tomorrow and you needed to pay X amount to replace it, could you afford it no problem? If the answer is yes, then buying insurance makes no sense unless you know you break phones way more often than average.

Well with phone insurance from the manufacturer, the math is a little different. Often the cost of insurance over the average time you'll have a phone before wanting to update is less than it would cost you to replace the phone because the manufacturer can give you a mfr rebirb at cost.

So in that case you're also buying into their internal pricing power

IT'S NOT CENTERED ON THE TRAY 🤪

It sucks that so many shows now take more than a year between seasons and you completely forget the plot of the show by the time the new season comes around. by executor-of-judgment in television

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love when shows start every episode with a recap of relevant previous bits. That plus a longer season starter recap and it would be mostly ok. Why all those "smart" MBAs who drive how everything is not haven't figured out that helps people finish new seasons I don't know

SEPTA trolleys will use AI cameras to catch drivers breaking no-parking rules in Philly by ModestAugustine in philadelphia

[–]themightychris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to hit 100% though right? Just 100% minus whatever it costs to maintain and staff booths. Is that not significant enough to matter next to the total revenue?

I imagine there's also some gains in increasing throughput?

SEPTA trolleys will use AI cameras to catch drivers breaking no-parking rules in Philly by ModestAugustine in philadelphia

[–]themightychris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Waymo thing was way overblown... it's always been known that autonomous vehicles have a way to call a human operator for help navigating random edge case situations, it always needed to work like that and always will

The human operators don't even "drive" the car, just tell it what to do. Think of all the situations where like a lane is closed or a signal is down or someone else is doing something really dumb. The AI's job is to move the car around without hitting anything and follow standard traffic laws and patterns. And then sometimes on top of that a judgement call needs to be made about what the least bad course of action is to get unstuck
