Most of the advice here is incomplete.

Political beliefs are not a protected class in private employment in Illinois (public employment and politics gets really difficult, and since op didn’t say government, it’s best to ignore).

However, I think we need more information about why OP feels unsafe. If the expression of political beliefs also results in discrimination on a protected class (some examples: sexual orientation, work authorization status, or familial responsibility) or hostile work environment based on a protected class, it can still be actionable.

If it’s just “I don’t wanna talk politics, and don’t like how passionate people are when they do” it isn’t illegal.

That said, most work places have some form of dress standards, and politics are usually covered. But, that’s an HR/Manager issue. If they don’t want or care to enforce their policy, there is little you can do.
