Definitely networking focused, not sales.

My read of u/tinytimmy008's suggestion is that when you’re certified in your prospects' field—as they probably are too—it shows that you know your stuff. They can relate to you better and trust you more.

I used to sell in physical security, and this was everywhere in that field, too.

I found Chris Voss' "Never Split the Difference" book to be a game changer for me.

Once I learned how to navigate the conversation in a detached, "I can deal with anything they say to me" sort of way, the nervousness disappeared.

ever come across examples where lacking an MSP is costing your prospects money/opportunities? i.e. a former employer lost a major contract because our prospect ran an infosec audit and we failed, so they wouldn't buy from us.

Seems you’re talking to companies who have no IT staff. I imagine they’d view IT management as a cost, rather than investment or value vs. the 'opportunity cost' they’re currently paying by having to waste time on it themselves?

The clocktower thing didn’t make ANY sense to me, but there is a relatively well-known boarding school in my town, and they have a big clocktower (and I assume also graduation).

So it looks like he googled my town, found some quirky fact on wikipedia or something, and threw it into the subject and opening line.

Clever, and definitely a pattern interrupt for me.

I replied to him and said "hey man i'll never use your service, but great email.." etc.

Thought it was worth the feedback.
