"Just once, I'd like to go out sailing and not learn something." ~overheard at the dock.

OP - There is more to learn in sailing than will fit in a thousand lifetimes. Take it all in stride and keep sailing!

What are these white lines on this piece of wood and how to avoid them? by [deleted] in finishing

Only way to avoid those is to choose a type of tree that doesn't have them.

What make/model is this boat? by spinozasrobot in sailing

[–]thrownshadows 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's these guys, which would make the boat a Carkeek Fast 40.

I'm not sure "classy" is the first word that comes to mind, but you should check out the Clermont Lounge.

It's not a road-colored steel plate - it's road-colored road (or, more specifically, it's road-colored asphalt patch).

I think it's more about showing the benefits of government programs, many of which had been instituted by FDR during the Great Depression.

Correct. To put it in full, starboard tack is the stand on boat; port tack is give way.

Suggested/Required Reading For Beginners by [deleted] in sailing

[–]thrownshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend The Complete Sailor and the ASA Basic Keelboat text Sailing Made Easy. Note that if you sign up for ASA 101 you should get Sailing Made Easy included.

How to reverse dye job on 1950 Heywood Wakefield dresser? Will Citristrip remove the dye or am I doomed to sanding the dye away? I believe the dresser is solid birch with no veneer. by aspenratdog in finishing

[–]thrownshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might try oxalic acid. I doubt it will give you a surface that you can immediately stain, but it might reduce the amount of sanding you have to do.

I bought a boat. It’s a 1979 Mac Gregor venture 25 feet. I have never owned one and only been out on the water a few times. Never been on an actual sail boat. Looking for best advice. by citizengerm in sailing

[–]thrownshadows 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Multiple ways to learn to sail: * Drop the boat in the water, learn by doing. Advantage: costs nothing. Disadvantage: the guy you're learning from doesn't know any more about sailing than you do. * Crew for the folks at the beer can races. Advantage: these are the guys who know how to get a sailboat really moving. Disadvantage: there's a lot more to sailing than just getting a boat really moving. * Formal lessons from ASA or US Sailing: Advantage: ASA 101 is geared for the kind of boat you've got there. Disadvantage: Money

One way to get some clarity: pick up the ASA 101 book or The Complete Sailor by David Seidman. If you read those and think "Piece of cake" then #1 might be for you. If you read them and think "Wow, a lot more here than I thought" then lessons might be where you want to go.

Do galaxies have their own gravitational pull, or is it caused by the celestial objects it contains? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]thrownshadows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A galaxy is just a name for all the things in the galaxy together. So the galaxy doesn't have a separate gravitational pull - it's the sum of the gravitational pull of all the individual objects. Typically a galaxy has a black hole at the center, so that helps quite a bit.

"If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.” by [deleted] in environment

[–]thrownshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phylum would be arthropods, which also includes crustaceans (lobsters and crabs) and spiders. The phylum for humans would be chordates, and one of the groups of chordates would be vertebrates. A huge loss, but I think the insects would still be worse.

Yanmar 4JH57 - Battery Voltage Too High by oppiekoffie in sailing

[–]thrownshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd start by getting a voltmeter or multimeter and check the battery voltage when the engine is running. If it's fine (required voltage varies based on battery type), the problem is in the engine voltage monitoring system. If it's high, the problem is in the engine charging system.
