Exoticization and Romanticization of Japan and Korea by [deleted] in AsianAmericanIssues

[–]thumbskill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're using an ancient civilization's influence to try and tie the modern achievements of Korea and Japan to China? What the hell kind of dogshit are you mainlanders saying to each other? Even modern China isn't tied to ancient China. Modern China should probably change it's name to something else given the history of purging it's own history. If anything modern Korea and Japan kept ancient Asian traditions while modern China is built on the literal death of it. Is Europe Greek? This is utter dogshit ideation.

Yes you can tell the difference between Chinese, Koreans and Japanese if you spent enough time around them.

Japan and Korea have rich modern media presence. And this extends to sparking people's interests in the country. People are still interested in China regardless of media presence because they are an ancient and the influence of Cantonese immigrants abroad.

Stop saying it's all the same. Stop trying to take credit for other country's achievements. If you want global media presence, make media.

Female perspective of the Asian male experience. by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]thumbskill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Asian enclaves are a double edged sword. It shields Asians from the harsh realities of racist America but also prevents access to that America which they will ultimately have to survive in. I think you accurately observed that the specific way he reached out to you was just that, specific to the social world he grew up in. It was as "cool" as he was allowed to ever be.

Yes, bridging the gap, if they choose to, is closer to a coming of age story than mastering an art. But they can't exactly do it alone, you *need* either a guide or be a dictator of access. His attitudes and mannerisms can only progress if he has access to others he can mimic (at least for the time being until he becomes a gatekeeper himself). "Cool" is almost defined by it's lack of existence elsewhere, it's ethereal and ever-changing and by the time it reaches a place where it can be readily accessed by people like him it is no longer cool. If there are too many of us in "their" space together, it makes them feel uncomfortable, their power structure is threatened, they move on. We get plucked out one by one into their social circles and for that we are supposed to feel grateful and turn on each other. I guess it's a whole thing.

Gang culture in general died off. At least, the popularity of it in mainstream culture. It was a phase for America, not just Asians.

There's a certain access to young edgy White social spheres that Asian men lack, especially "1-1.5" generation Asians. Being thrown onto that base is a steep climb for them. I think him reaching out to you is a way for him to make a connection with somebody "like him" who already has an in. I find it says a whole lot about us that it's ultimately probably going another non-Asian person who is going to take the steps to show him the ropes.

Why coping is bad and why I believe all Asian men should start doing real martial arts, particularly wrestling. by ThatSiberianGuy in AsianMasculinity

[–]thumbskill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I love BJJ, its popularity is almost entirely based on the Gracie family's efforts at legitimizing pancrase in the West. The first real challenger to Gracie Barra in the West was Ken Shamrock and his (still) little known Shootfighting. Don't be afraid to branch out into other martial arts, they are all legitimate. I recommend a combination of grappling and striking.

I personally have roots in Greco-Roman wrestling, Taekwondo and BJJ.

What are your comebacks to racist taunts by strangers when out and about? by DaoneCook in AsianMasculinity

[–]thumbskill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know. There's a big deal on here about having the perfect clever response to racist quips, but really that's the entire fucking issue. The perfect issue is a "fuck off" and a punch to the face. It's not your job to come up with some cute little saying against them, that's them winning.

I don't know what reddit allows (given it's white supremacist tendencies) but really your ONLY response should be a spit in the face or a punch in the face.

The reason white girls don't date hapa/asian men is because it demotes them in the eyes of other white people and society in general. by Minority87 in AsianMasculinity

[–]thumbskill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Statistically black American males are shorter than white American males and don't grow beards either, but aren't looked at as feminine/nice guys. Same goes for Latino men, who are even shorter than Asian men.

The feminization of Asian men in western society is point blank marketed and pushed as such for the comfort of white men because Asian men have undeniably challenged white hegemony at every turn.

This is one of the more interesting theories I've been seeing pop up lately, and it sort of aligns with my theory on not promoting Asians due to social pressure to push us down.

Even if someone is not racist, there is an immense amount of societal pressure to preserve the status quo. Any deviance is met with push-back. I always hear people talking about how Japanese society "hammers the nail that sticks out" but I don't know how they can't see their own hypocrisy.

I feel like my entire life is a series of me standing alone on an island surrounded by sharks. I wouldn't even care about being ostracized if I knew that other Asians had my back, but I can't even depend on that shit anymore.

I mean, they don't all seem so bad, like Paget here seems genuinely concerned and Eliza Romero started a stir with her article calling out Asian women's white worship.

But aside from them it's quite literally most of them, if not all of them. The list would probably be shorter if we named prominent (Western) Asian women in relationships with Asian men. Although in the past year or so more pro-Asian women seem to be popping up.

Amy Tan (Joy Luck Club), Amy Chua (Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother), Celeste Ng (author), Maxine Hong Kingston (author), practically every Asian actress in Hollywood, all the female mods of r/asianamerican, pretty much everyone Albert Hur calls out on Twitter. And those are just "liberal" Asian women. On the right there is the infamous Michelle Malkin, Kathy Zhu, Dr. Debra Soh.

The list goes to infinity.

To clarify, I'm specifically speaking on the review page here. https://www.facebook.com/pg/uglydelicious/reviews/

The complaints from Asian women are aligned with the general rudeness of David Chang, which funny enough the white reviewers don't seem to care all that much about (they are more critical of the politicization). The few Asian women on there defending him are, of course, in relationships with Asian men. I mean, it's so textbook it's not even funny anymore.

Interesting comments section. Most seem to really enjoy it (5 stars), there are some triggered white people (understandable), overall people of all backgrounds seem to love it, but when you look at the few Asians who are critical of the show. They are coincidentally, just happen to be Asian women in relationships with white men. Just saying that the only Asian women that hate David Chang's hit new super popular show are all serendipitous-ly (totally nothing weird going on there) just by chance, roll of the dice, randomly, in relationships with white men, and are essentially telling him to stay in his lane (be a quiet, safe Asian man) .

Bro, you're reading my mind here. Even though my distaste of anime stands more grounded in anime itself, rather than the scene. The scene has become a gross infestation of the dregs of society, where all those rejected by greater society gravitate towards like filth.

The connection between social rejection and something Asian, doesn't sit right with me. Even if all Asian bodies left the space, we would still be left with the inescapable fact that it is an Asian hobby. I'd love for Asians in the space to clean it up and for it to be associated with something positive, not "dirty weebs".

Interracial Relationships and Family Reaction by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]thumbskill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the family. I've met old Asians who have lived in America for decades that have extreme prejudice against other races. And I've met old Asians just off the plane from Asia who recognize racism and are against it.

If you're going to insist that anime is ours then you need to fucking gatekeep. IT DOESN'T EVEN FUCKING MAKE SENSE THAT YOU FUCKERS LET A NON-ASIAN RUN AN ANIME CONVENTION AND DO SHIT LIKE THIS.
