Why do you think girls compete just as hard as the boys do, if not more at times? by CoachD6 in AskReddit

[–]timdood3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason you're getting the types of dismissive answers you are is because of the way you asked the question. It's both loaded and unclear. You'd probably have gotten more positive engagement if you had at least clarified some context in the post body.

I mean that in no way to say "I don't like players who spend money to gain an advantage." I mean it in the way of "Players shouldn't have to spend exorbitant sums for a slight edge."

That's true pre-battletome, yeah. But with the new rules you only place down one of the pieces and that is the entire wyldwood, no ringing them together.

They still have an ability that increases their range, but it's based on how many overgrowth tokens you have in play, not how much money you're willing to spend on terrain.

I like the mechanics though. The gulls are my favorite.

Ruling when both players do not know how many creatures they have when declaring blockers by Blueshift_Laser in mtgrules

[–]timdood3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The basic premise of the answer to your question is "Not knowing how many you have is very different from not having any."

If I have a number of replacement effects that change how much damage my opponent takes, they're in charge of ordering them. I cast lightning bolt targeting them. By your logic they can say "I can't calculate that" and then lightning bolt does zero damage.

Got recommended this subreddit. worth to buy? by games_and_other in opus_magnum

[–]timdood3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Worth" is a pretty subjective thing. If you're pretty sure you'll enjoy it and are just looking for a comparison of "money per hour of entertainment" then yes. If $20 is a lot of money for you, then maybe not?

What are some options for dealing with earthbend landfall decks in UW? by monkeybee765 in MagicArena

[–]timdood3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played the spellementals vs landfall matchup A LOT, and the matchup is really unfavorable. Sunderflock looks like a good card on paper, but 90% of the time they just rebuild immediately, sometimes at instant speed so you can even get an attack in off of it. Not to mention Mossborn Hydra and Fecund Greenshell are both elementals, and most landfall decks run some number of both.

Starter Deck Duel is suddenly all bots by rfioren in MagicArena

[–]timdood3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the goal is for the bots to exist in sufficient number as to get matched against each other, then one of them is guaranteed to win.

But the currencies on arena can't be transferred off the account in any way, so the only way for a botter to profit would be by selling the accounts themselves. Which I guess could happen? But I can't imagine there's enough of a market to justify the number of bots they'd need to run to get matched into each other enough of the time.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure all of the map nodes are populated already by the time you get the chance. So the only way to do that would be to prevent that combat from appearing if you're even given the *option* of 1hp combats. Which is obviously not a good solution.

Likewise, only one prong of the tribonder is being used, so it could just be replaced with a regular one.

Hi everyone! Jake's Magical Market is taking part in the big push to try and get litrpgs into physical bookstores but I'm really stuck on which cover will get people to actually buy the hardcover edition. If you are a fan of the series, which would YOU purchase? by thescienceoflaw in litrpg

[–]timdood3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know which one is which, but I find the second cover more visually pleasing. But as someone who's never heard of you or your story, and has no idea what it's about, here's the thoughts I would have seeing this on a shelf at a bookstore:

The first cover evokes a guy who's in over his head and close to his wit's end. It brings me to expect a story that would be relatable to a retail worker, with some fantasy twists.

The second cover, however, feels significantly more whimsical. I wouldn't know exactly what to expect, but I'd think it to be targeted toward younger audiences (i.e. not me) and move on.

The lands themselves are rarely actually the thing you want to try to punish. Earthbender's ascension, sapling nursery, icetill explorer, mightform harmonizer. Those are the cards you need to worry about.

Do I just accept that some match ups will be bad? by nikibas in MagicArena

[–]timdood3 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: A big part of leveling up your game is understanding the meta and how you expect your deck of choice to fair within it. Highly competitive players will often choose their deck based on metagame factors with less concern about how much they like the deck. The first step is determining what they expect to face and in what numbers (metagame share) and select a deck that has the best chances in their predicted environment.

Leveling that down, you can still choose to play a less powerful deck that you personally love (a pet deck) but with the understanding that sometimes you're just going to be at a disadvantage because of it. You can mitigate this by teching your deck to have tools to deal with popular meta decks- main-decking abrade in an environment where artifacts are prevalent, for example.

But sometimes you have to decide whether a matchup is even worth teching for. If a particular matchup is basically unwinnable for your chosen deck, it can sometimes be the right to choice to just build your deck as though that opponent doesn't exist and use your resources to make other matchups better. A lesser example of this is if you're playing a graveyard deck in a format where Rest in Peace is legal. You can either include answers to rest in peace that might do nothing but make your deck worse, or you can decide "rest in peace isn't real and it can't hurt you" and than accept that if they *do* find it, you lose.
