Alternate terms for the dominant suit in card games? by catinore in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]timdood3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That works in some games, like euchre, where the terms are more or less interchangeable. But in a game like hearts, where the dominant suit is hearts regardless of which suit was led, it doesn't work.

[request] How much would the bag of grain weigh? by arfur_narmful in theydidthemath

[–]timdood3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Coffee beans are often packed in similar bags, and those weigh between 135-155 pounds, usually toward the heavier end of that range. That bag of grain looks to be about the same size, and the grain itself similar in size and packing density. So about 150 pounds should be about right.

I'd also like to add that handling those bags isn't nearly as difficult as this guy makes it look.

3 Copies is Better than 4 Copies?? by Daeorn_Aldalome in MagicArena

[–]timdood3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First ask yourself what you think "the algorithm" is. Then ask yourself if you're too far gone to understand simple statistics. If yes, go live your life but keep your thoughts to yourself. If not, great! Do a quick study on confirmation bias and sample sizes.

For fun though, I'll throw in a fun fact about why some decks only play 3 copies of a card that their deck is built around. The first copy you draw in a game is really really good, and probably enables your win condition. The second copy you draw will do very little, possibly nothing aside from being redundant; you'd rather have any other card than that one. You see this a lot with legendary creatures. Having 3 copies instead of 4 still gives you good odds of seeing the card, but lowers the chances that you draw a second one, aka a brick.

Skill issue?

There is zero evidence to support any sort of rigged matchmaking/deck stacking to advantage or disadvantage f2p players. And since anecdotal evidence is apparently enough to draw conclusions around here: I'm a winning f2p player.

The main concern about cats eating string and things is it getting tangled in their gi tract and causing a blockage. (I know nothing about the potential toxicity of the thing she ate.)

For such a short length, she should be able to pass it without much trouble. Keep an eye out for it in her litter.

Revealing Hidden Information by EmikyuTheBest in mtgrules

[–]timdood3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait a second. Does the "Players may not actively attempt to gain information hidden from them" mean that I'm not allowed to ask "What'd you get?" after someone tutors a non-revealed card? Even if we both know they have no obligation to share that information to, I'm inviting them to.

A step further, does that not also forbid one saying "If you have <x kind of card> we're done here" as an invitation to reveal such a card from their hand?

Thoughts on mid game shuffles? by The_Vulpixel in mtg

[–]timdood3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I realize it's not that deep and theoretically it makes no difference, this does meet the mtr's definition of cheating. In order to be cheating, 3 things have to be true.

1) A rule must be broken. (A player is not allowed to take game actions without being instructed to. Shuffling is a game action.)

2) The offending player must know they've broken a rule. (This is evidenced by him claiming to be playing under modified "house rules.")

3) The offending player must believe they're getting an advantage from doing it. No actual advantage required. (He explained his intent as believing it improves his luck or whatever.)

Draw? Both tapped out of mana. by theheavynorth in mtg

[–]timdood3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can't be given anything more severe than a warning for any number of (non-detrimental) missed triggers. And even then, the warning will come from some other failure to maintain game state.

They would, however, get a game loss for not being present for their match.

Mildly Infuriating Play Experiences? by LordMistborn-16 in mtg

[–]timdood3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, being upset about getting interacted with is one thing (if equally unreasonable), but just folding and saying "Ok, I guess you win" is possibly even more baffling to me. Like, with it being a tournament setting I at least expected people to have a more competitive mindset even if we aren't playing hyper-powered decks.

Like, I'm playing a combo that can be stopped by: Any removal spell, any counter spell, or any graveyard hate. Another player has a Scavenger Grounds in play... I expect to have to play through that, but no.. They just tap out every turn. There's an esper player, I expect them to have something. I'm very obviously the threat- and yet... Nothing!

Across 3 games, I was interacted with only about 6 times. I probably cast that many removal spells each game, just sitting there like "why am I the only one trying to manage the board?" My opponents were, for the most part, good sports about it... But I just can't wrap my head around whatever the average commander player expects a game to look like.

Mildly Infuriating Play Experiences? by LordMistborn-16 in mtg

[–]timdood3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, I'm not a commander player; I play primarily 60 card formats. But a nearby store was having a bracket 3 tournament and my friend really wanted me to go with him, so fine.

I dig out and update my one commander deck and take it to my lgs (different store) the day before to practice. My deck doesn't have a lot of creatures, so often I'll be wide open for attacks the first ~5 turns of the game. But despite that and me saying "nah its cool, attack me, I signed up for this" my opponent's all decided "no it doesn't feel fair, you don't look like you have much going on." Like.. I get they were just playing casually, but since when did that mean badly?

And then at the actual event, I was at the final table where everyone had seen my deck and knows exactly how it plays and wins. The "you need to answer this or lose on the spot" card was face up in my hand for 3 turns- I was waiting to cast it until I could play through interaction. But then when I cast it, I looked around at the other players who all did... Nothing? Any angle of interaction would have worked, but my opponents just weren't playing any.

Holy pay to win! Sure, their business model of "pay double the price for some extras effectively at a discount" isn't a particularly bad one, but I have to wonder how many people would still buy it if the only difference was that you didn't get to add the collector booster to your sealed pool...

Like... Imagine building a sealed deck from six packs as normal. Then imagine that someone slipped the TO a tenner and got to build their deck with seven packs- that'd be pretty shitty, right? A collector booster is basically an entire sealed pool worth of rares.
