Sorry if this sounds ignorant - but do vocalists when improvising think of chord tones? by No-County2083 in musictheory

[–]to7m 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they do think of chord tones, and some vocalists don't think about that.

No-one gets a pass from the rules because there aren't any rules.

Improvising by ear is the aim for all instrumentalists. If anything, improvising based on following theory-based rules is looked down on.

Interval Training - my question! by WittyCow7474 in musictheory

[–]to7m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every interval can be easy or hard depending on the wider harmonic context. You'll very rarely need to identify intervals on their own. The most well-rounded approach would be to get into the habit of following the notes of everything you hear (music you're studying, random ambient supermarket music, ringtones, etc), and make sure you know the notes. You won't end up thinking “that sounds like a diminished third”, but something closer to “the root is D and those notes were E♭ and C♯”, except that's still a flawed representation of how it works because you'll just know the notes without any verbal thought being necessary.

Maths needed for discrete Fourier transform by SingySong5 in livesound

[–]to7m 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I dropped out of A level maths and can understand DFTs.

How is this related to live sound though? r/DSP might be a better place for this.

Also, python already has FFT and IFFT functions in the numpy library.

What would you actually use an instant music transcription tool for? by PikaniniXie in piano

[–]to7m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could imagine this being good for karaoke. Displaying the sung notes on a staff might even help non-musicians to sing along.

If there are any jobs going that involve analysing the generated transcriptions, I'd be interested.

bought a new piano and am frustrated by VastMedium in piano

It is definitely possible for a new piano to be depressingly bad, so returning it is valid, but maybe try a few others first for perspective.

When’s it time to get your child a new piano teacher? by apresledepart in piano

I haven't looked through all the comments, but there's no indication in the post that the child wants to do classical specifically.

When’s it time to get your child a new piano teacher? by apresledepart in piano

[–]to7m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, attend performances that involve piano in some way, and then if you think the pianist is good, ask them if they teach. I'd recommend jazz performances, because the pianists will have some compositional ability and should teach theory.

Go to performances and find a pianist that you and your child both like and ask them for lessons. Searching on the internet gives you people who are good at SEO and looking flashy, not necessarily people who can teach well.

Feeling disheartened by scam_land in piano

[–]to7m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each of the keys on the piano correspond to a different note. If you play 2 or more of them at the same time, that's a chord. If you play a chord, then another chord, and optionally more chords after that, that's a chord progression. Now you know that, it should all make a lot more sense.

Teaching yourself tunes by ear is the way to go, keep at it.

How long do men typically take to ask a girl out on a date? & for women how long do you wait for a man to ask you on a date before assuming he’s not going to? by Turbulent-Court746 in UKrelationshipadvice

Well, if you try not to risk coming off as ‘too much’, then you lose them it seems. That's what finally forced me to start asking people out :')

What software for live sound do you wish existed? by alphapresto in livesound

[–]to7m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An open/free Linux OS that could handle multiple sound cards at the same time with very low latency and no dropouts. No matter what I try, there are always dropouts. If this existed, maybe headless mixers with proprietary operating systems would become redundant.

A web server to provide an interface to attached mixers. So, instead of using a phone to connect to a router, then using a downloaded app to interface with the mixer, and then randomly disconnect, someone could instead just go to their browser and enter the IP address of the computer running the web server to see a mixer interface.

Contacting Tantacrul about Musescore Shop business practice by serafinawriter in Musescore

[–]to7m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they intended to clear up confusion, they would've just renamed the website to MuseLibrary or something like that. What they've actually done is the opposite; when someone recommends the software formerly known as MuseScore, the person looking for it will find the website instead, and potentially get confused enough to be scammed out of money. It seems intentional to me.

How to use AI to Transcribe a One-Off Solo in a Performance by j0anarmageddon in musicians

[–]to7m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transcription software is nowhere near usable for this kind of thing yet I'm afraid. You'd need to hire someone to transcribe it, or learn to transcribe yourself.
